THE MYTHOLOGY, TRADITIONS and HISTORY OF MacDHUBHSITH ― MacDUFFIE CLAN (McAfie, McDuffie, MacFie, MacPhee, Duffy, etc.) VOLUME 2 THE LANDS OF OUR FATHERS PART 2 Earle Douglas MacPhee (1894 - 1982) M.M., M.A., M.Educ., LL.D., D.U.C., D.C.L. Emeritus Dean University of British Columbia This 2009 electronic edition Volume 2 is a scan of the 1975 Volume VII. Dr. MacPhee created Volume VII when he added supplemental data and errata to the original 1792 Volume II. This electronic edition has been amended for the errata noted by Dr. MacPhee. - i - THE LIVES OF OUR FATHERS PREFACE TO VOLUME II In Volume I the author has established the surnames of most of our Clan and has proposed the sources of the peculiar name by which our Gaelic compatriots defined us. In this examination we have examined alternate progenitors of the family. Any reader of Scottish history realizes that Highlanders like to move and like to set up small groups of people in which they can become heads of families or chieftains. This was true in Colonsay and there were almost a dozen areas in Scotland where the clansman and his children regard one of these as 'home'. The writer has tried to define the nature of these homes, and to study their growth. It will take some years to organize comparative material and we have indicated in Chapter III the areas which should require research. In Chapter IV the writer has prepared a list of possible chiefs of the clan over a thousand years. The books on our Clan give very little information on these chiefs but the writer has recorded some probable comments on his chiefship.

  • Clan Donald Lands Trust
Clan Donald Lands Trust: The First Steps A recollection from the Right Honourable Godfrey James Macdonald of Macdonald, 8th Lord Macdonald and 34th High Chief of Clan Donald, March 2019 Introduction It is now nearly fifty years since our Clan embarked on the latest chapter of our great history, namely the establishment of the Clan Donald Lands Trust. What we created then was without precedent - a Clan owning its own lands, administered by a board of Trustees from all parts of the English speaking world, for the benefit of all clansmen worldwide. This was a truly gargantuan undertaking, and as there are now only two of the original Trustees still alive, Clanranald and myself, I think that it is important to place on record those exciting, nail-biting, terrifying and sometimes desperate early days that have enabled the Clan Donald Lands Trust to become a reality. Background Following the death of my father in November 1970 and the inevitable sale of the Macdonald Estates to cover two lots of Death Duties and other inherited honourable debts some dating back to 1812, I was approached by Donald J Macdonald of Castleton, then President of the Clan Donald Society of Edinburgh. It had always been his dream that the Clan should acquire a small piece of the original Kingdom of the Isles, and that it should be held in perpetuity for all clansmen, while also concentrating on the historical and educational aspects associated with the Lordship of the Isles. The family were under enormous pressure to conclude a sale of the estate by the end of July 1971, so the Clan had less than six months to raise sufficient funds to enable it to make a meaningful offer for the estate.

New York, U. 5. A. From Painting by Dr. E, F. Coriu, Paris K.1s11\1 UL CASTLE} IsLE OF BAH HA PREFACE AVING a Highlander's pride of race, it was perhaps natural that I should have been deeply H interested, as a lad, in the stirring tales and quaint legends of our ancient Clan. With maturity came the desire for dependable records of its history, and I was disappointed at finding only incomplete accounts, here and there in published works, which were at the same time often contradictory. My succession to the Chiefship, besides bringing greetings from clansmen in many lands, also brought forth their expressions of the opinion that a complete history would be most desirable, coupled with the sug gestion that, as I had considerable data on hand, I com pile it. I felt some diffidence in undertaking to write about my own family, but, believing that under these conditions it would serve a worthy purpose, I commenced this work which was interrupted by the chaos of the Great War and by my own military service. In all cases where the original sources of information exist I have consulted them, so that I believe the book is quite accurate.

Clan LACHLAN Association of Canada, Inc. www.clanlachlan.ca Dress (usually Ladies only) Modern Ancient CREST: Out of a crest coronet, a castle set upon a rock, all proper MOTTO: Fortis et Fidus (Strong and Faithful) SEPTS: Gilchrist, McEwen, Claflin, in all various spellings A SHORT HISTORY: The family of "Maclachlan of Maclachlan" have been Chiefs of Clan Lachlan for about 750 years. The Chief still refers to himself as Chief of Clan Lachlan which is the anglicization of the Gaelic Clann Lachlainn. The use of the term Clan MacLachlan arose after the anglicization of Gaelic names by non- Gaelic speaking people. People were called MacLachlan and belonged to a clan so manufacturers assumed that they belonged to the Clan MacLachlan. The mighty MacDonalds did not follow this commercial trend. They correctly use Clan Donald for their clan society. When the Clan MacLachlan Society was founded in 1979, many particularly those with some Gaelic pressed for the more correct usage Clan Lachlan. Their views did not prevail but it was decided that the main communication vehicle of the Society be called clan lachlan!; the castle has been castle lachlan for 750 years; the CD was called clan lachlan CD; the Trust formed to preserve Kilmorie Chapel and old castle lachlan was called Lachlan Trust. The Clan MacLachlan Society was founded in 1979, some years after the Clan MacLachlan Association of North America was formed. This is a Clan Society with the President being the Chief of Clan Lachlan. It is a Celtic & Scottish Highland - based organization with autonomous units across the globe held together by a common Constitution, common objectives and a core of common services.

  • Battle of Harlaw Was a Feudal Dispute but Must Be Viewed in the Context of Growing Conflict Between Highland and Lowland
Battle Name: Harlaw Council area: Aberdeenshire Date: 24th July 1411 UKFOC number: 339 HARLAW 1 SUMMARY 1.1 CONTEXT In origin the battle of Harlaw was a feudal dispute but must be viewed in the context of growing conflict between Highland and Lowland. The situation was also complicated by the fact that King James I was imprisoned in England and thus royal authority was weak. Donald, Lord of the Isles, having fought for control of Ross, now planned to strike south east into Moray, towards Aberdeen. But there was substantial warning of the impending campaign and so defensive preparations were put in hand by the Earl of Mar in the spring and early summer of 1411. In the medieval period the main road from Inverness to Aberdeen probably followed broadly the route of the A96. It appears that it was along this route that the Highland forces approached Moray. As soon as he was aware of the approach of the Highland forces, Mar marshalled his troops at Inverurie, which controlled the route. The exact line of the road to the north of Inverurie ran on the north side of the river Urie and it was 2km north west of the bridge over the river, just north of Inverurie, that the Highland forces camped on the night of the 23rd July, on high ground near Harlaw. On the morning of the 24th the Earl of Mar marched out of Inverurie to engage the Highland army. 1.2 ACTION Mar approach from the south east. The action seems to have been fought on foot and with each army probably deployed in three ‘battles’, the infantry arranged in ‘schiltrons’, closely ordered ranks of spearmen.

  • History and Culture
HISTORY AND CULTURE HISTORY AND CULTURE Scotland is known to have been inhabited for about 6-8,000 years, with successive waves of settlers and invaders. Celts from north-west Europe arrived about 500BC. They were called Britons by the later invading Romans. Although these temporary conquerors referred to the northern lands above the line of the Forth and Clyde as Caledonia, they alternatively named the northern tribes Picts and all of these terms are used today in describing the early history of Scotland. The name Scotland derives from the Scoti, another Celtic tribe, who came from Ireland and in the 5th and 6th centuries and settled on the western seaboard in present-day Argyll in sufficient numbers to form the Kingdom of Dalriada. They spoke Gaelic. The first thousand years AD is a story of warfare in which the peoples of Scotland – Scot, Pict, Briton and Anglian – gradually came together. By 843AD a united Scottish/Pictish kingdom had emerged. In 1018, the Northern English were defeated at the Battle of Carham and the border came to be fixed along the River Tweed. By 1034, the Strathclyde Britons were added to the larger kingdom, making it much the same shape as Scotland today POLITICAL SCOTLAND Wars of Independence In 1070, King Malcolm III married Margaret, grand-daughter of Edward the Confessor of England – one of many occasions when the Royal Houses of England and Scotland were interlinked by marriage. Norman influences (following the Norman Conquest of England) gradually spread to Scotland. Anglo Norman families, with names like Graham and Bruce, settled.
