  • Social Implication of Arsenic Pollution in Eastern Barddhaman Mahamaya Laha, Arambagh, Hooghly, West Bengal
Trans. Inst. Indian Geographers Social Implication of Arsenic Pollution in Eastern Barddhaman Mahamaya Laha, Arambagh, Hooghly, West Bengal Abstract Ascending demand for irrigation and non-availability of water from the tail ends of canals together make the use of groundwater irrigation imperative in the blocks along Bhagirathi (Kalna-I, II, Katwa-I, II, Purbasthali-I, II) in district Barddhaman. Overuse of groundwater and consequent depletion of groundwater level has unfortunately invited arsenic pollution in groundwater through oxidation of arseno-pyrites. Arsenic occurs at 15m-60m depth and is often found along the existing or abandoned river course, bils etc. Long continued consumption of arsenic-contaminated drinking water gives rise to arsenicosis, a health hazard which may cause skin lesions to cancer. Victims are mainly undernourished, poor people of remote villages in Purbasthali-I,II blocks deprived of minimum transport, education, medical and marketing facilities. Among them Mandra, Kalyanpur, Phaleya villages are mention-worthy. Once affected by the health hazard, economic condition of a family deteriorates further and sometimes it turns to a social hazard. To the women it’s more pathetic because ugly skin lesion of arsenicosis and declined working capacity make them burden to their families either at their parents’ house or at their in-laws’ house. Key words: Purbasthali, arsenic pollution, arsenicosis, social hazard. Arsenic is considered to be a semi-metal. It arsenite, the trivalent compound. Oxidation occurs in small quantity with the naturally of arsenical compounds dissolves arsenic. occurring minerals of silver, lead, copper, It pollutes groundwater. Long-continued nickel, iron, cobult and antimoni. In nature drinking of arsenic-rich water may lead to arsenic occurs mainly in the form of arsenicosis, from mere skin irritation to even sulphides such as orpient (As2S3), realgar cancer.

  • Hazard District Disaster Management Plan 2014-15 Has Been Approved by the DDMA & DDMC Meeting, Burdwan on 26.5.2014
Di st r i ct Di sast er Management Pl an, Bur dwan Di st r i ct 2013-14 MEETI NG OF DDMA & DDMC AT ANGI KAR HAL L , BURDWAN ON 2 6.. 5 2014 1 Di st r i ct Di sast er Management Pl an, Bur dwan Di st r i ct 2013-14 FOREWORD We can not escape from the fury of natural disasters and man made disaster as we can not prevent these. Burning example is ‘Aila. There are plentiful occurrences of disasters through out the year. Disaster is negatively corelated with development activities as it slows down the process of development. The Burdwan district having an area 7024 Sq. K.M. and a population of 77,23,663 as per Census 20011, is one of the largest districts in the state. The district is surrounded in North by Ajoy river, South/South-West by Damador, North-West by Barakar and East by Bagarathi. It extends from 22056` to 23053` North latitude and from 86048` to 88025` East longitude. The calamities in the district vary from eastern to western part. While eastern part faces flood / water logging every year, the western part faces industrial hazards including subsidence etc. There is a long stretch of NH - 2 and rail network traversing through this district. Hence, there always remains possibility of occurrence of road / rail accidents, resulting in human suffering. There has been a progressive change in the approach, methods and execution of relief operations during before and after natural calamities. Of late, there is a shift in paradigm in the management of flood and disaster form the earlier concept of contingent plan to comprehensive Disaster Risk Management Programme.
