Wisconsin Gazette endorses Tom Nelson for Lt. Governor Wisconsin“Tom Nelson Gazette has Endorses been an effective Tom Nelson LGBT advocatefor Lieutenant behind theGovernor scenes – and in the face of potential political backlash. … But our major reason for endorsing Nelson is that he brings the most political strength to the Democratic gubernatorial ticket. Scott Walker, the likely Re- publican nominee, has vowed to erase the fragile gains that LGBT Wisconsinites have made toward equality. Tom Barrett, on the other hand, The three leading contenders on the Democratic ticket for lieutenant governor express unqualified support for LGBT equality and have gone to some lengths to has vowed to protect our rights. VOTE SEPTEMBER 14 Sanders, who formerly served as Tammy Baldwin’s outreach coordinator on labor, jobs and environmental issues, has in effect made LGBT civil rights the second-most important issue in his campaign – behind jobs. In his appearancesHELP throughout TOM the NELSON state, Sanders has HELP circulated petitions TOM calling BARRETT for repeal of Wisconsin’s same-sex marriage ban. He has appeared at most, if not all, major communityAuthorized events and Paid during for by this Nelson election for Wisconsin, season, includingDonna Seidel, the Treasurer July protest in Madison against the National Organization for Marriage’s appearance there. www.tomnelsonforwi.com State Sen. Spencer Coggs also has earned our respect and appreciation. As a 27-year veteran of the Legislature, he has consistently supported LGBT rights and HIV/AIDS funding. Coggs says he embraces our struggle for equality as part of his family’s tradition of civil rights activism and public service – a tradition that includes an uncle who was one of Wisconsin’s first African-American state representatives and an aunt who served as the state’s first black female legislator.

Nelson has been an effective LGBT advocate behind the scenes – and in the face of potential political backlash. Unlike Coggs, whose Milwaukee district is dependably Democratic, and Sanders, who has never held political office, Nelson has consistently stood firm on equality issues even though he represents a Fox Valley constituency that’s majority Republican.

{ Editorial } Support AIDS Walk On Sept. 19, AIDS Walk Wisconsin, the state’s largest AIDS fundraiser, returns to the Summerfest grounds. We urge you to become involved. AIDS is not a gay disease but it continues to disproportionately impact our community. Gay and bisexual men in the United States are diagnosed with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, at 44 times the rate of straight men. Still, the LGBT community has become increasingly apathetic toward the ongoing epidemic. The disconnect is generally attributed to the lack of experience that young people have had with the disease and to the improved treatments that have made HIV a largely manageable condition. But while people diagnosed with HIV today can expect to live long and relatively healthy lives if they access treatment promptly and adhere to it, they still face significant challenges. HIV drugs are outside the financial grasp of many people, especially the young men and men of color who are currently experiencing the highest rates of new infections. To survive, they must turn to government programs and HIV/AIDS organizations like the AIDS Resource Center of Wisconsin, which benefits from AIDS Walk. Treatment also is technically complex, often requiring the services of a case manager in order to be implemented effectively. Housing is another major challenge, particularly for those who experience periods of illness in which { Letters } they’re unable to work. For people battling HIV, it’s imperative to maintain a healthy lifestyle. That Here’s a suggestion for Push polls may rely on innu- doubt about his record.
