  • RBWF Burns Chronicle Index
A Directory To the Articles and Features Published in “The Burns Chronicle” 1892 – 2005 Compiled by Bill Dawson A “Merry Dint” Publication 2006 The Burns Chronicle commenced publication in 1892 to fulfill the ambitions of the recently formed Burns Federation for a vehicle for “narrating the Burnsiana events of the year” and to carry important articles on Burns Clubs and the developing Federation, along with contributions from “Burnessian scholars of prominence and recognized ability.” The lasting value of the research featured in the annual publication indicated the need for an index to these, indeed the 1908 edition carried the first listings, and in 1921, Mr. Albert Douglas of Washington, USA, produced an index to volumes 1 to 30 in “the hope that it will be found useful as a key to the treasures of the Chronicle” In 1935 the Federation produced an index to 1892 – 1925 [First Series: 34 Volumes] followed by one for the Second Series 1926 – 1945. I understand that from time to time the continuation of this index has been attempted but nothing has yet made it to general publication. I have long been an avid Chronicle collector, completing my first full set many years ago and using these volumes as my first resort when researching any specific topic or interest in Burns or Burnsiana. I used the early indexes and often felt the need for a continuation of these, or indeed for a complete index in a single volume, thereby starting my labour. I developed this idea into a guide categorized by topic to aid research into particular fields.

PREFACE. Of the numerous biographers of the poet Burns, few have dilated on his lineage. Some doubtless felt that his position might not be elevated by any pedigree, however famous. Others may have been content to hold that himself being in lowly circumstances, any inquiry as to his progenitors would be useless and unprofitable. By his biographer Dr Currie he is described as " in reality a peasant." What in respect of descent Burns really was these Memoirs will show. Bemotely sprung from a landed stock, his im- mediate ancestors were yeomen, at first opvdent, latterly the reverse. The family had produced another poet, the author of "Thrummy Cap;" but decided indications of intellectual activity did not appear in the house till subsequent to the marriage of the poet's paternal grandfather. The wife of this person was of the family of Keith of Craig, a branch of the house of Keith-Marischal.

  • 1 the Appearance of Women's Politics in the Correspondence Pages of Aberdeen Newspapers 1900–14 SARAH PEDERSEN Robert Gordo
1 The Appearance of Women’s Politics in the Correspondence Pages of Aberdeen Newspapers 1900–14 SARAH PEDERSEN Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom ABSTRACT A newspaper’s ‘Letters to the Editor’ column represents its readership in an unique way and can provide a useful ‘thermometer’ with which to measure the extent of critical debate and discussion a particular issue generated in a locality. In this article, the letters of women to the editor of the Aberdeen Daily Journal, 1900 to 1914, are analysed to discover the type of political issues with which these women concerned themselves. It is argued that the women must have felt particularly strongly about such issues since they were prepared to take their arguments outside their social circle and to identify themselves as politically active in the pages of their daily newspaper. Political issues dealt with include local government, the suffrage question and government legislation. While much of the evidence used comes from the letters of active suffragists who were usually members of national suffrage associations, it is argued that the period showed an expansion in the type of woman interested in politics, and the corresponding urge to write to the newspapers. This is evidenced in the number of women who firmly stated that they were not suffragists, but became politicised enough to write to the newspaper complaining about the Insurance Act in 1912. 2 The following is based on a study of the letters of women correspondents to the Aberdeen Daily Journal between 1900 and the outbreak of war in 1914. It assesses the letter-writers’ attitudes to contemporary political issues, whether local, national or those perceived as ‘women’s issues’, in particular women’s involvement in local politics and the suffrage question.

  • The Genealogy of the Families of Douglas of Mulderg and Robertson
Iill I . //J. ^ National Library of Scotland *B000426185* 7UBRA8 THE GENEALOGY OF THE FAMILIES DOUGLAS OF MULDERG ROBERTSON OF KINDEACE WITH THEIR DESCENDANTS DINGWALL: A. M. ROSS & COMPANY. MDCCCXCV. PREFATORY NOTICE. We think it may be well to state here the reasons why the genealogical outlines •of the families of Douglas of Mulderg and Robertson of Kindeace have been printed. They are the work of a descendant of the Douglas family, who lives amongst us, and has been known during the last thirty or forty years as a genea- logist of gx-eat ability and possessing very wide information. This gentleman has frequently of late years been asked for information regarding these two families, therefore he has kindly complied with the request of some of those interested in the Douglas and Robertson families that his genealogical knowledge of them should be printed. The advantage of printing will be seen when it is understood that a large portion of the matter this book contains has not hitherto been pub- lished, and might easily be lost and forgotten, as many of the descendants of these families have not been proprietors of land and their representatives have gone to all quarters of the globe in order to make their fortunes. The habit of wandering far afield has rendered the collection of full particulars in some cases extremely difficult, and in others impossible ; so, when there are errors in this book, they may, we hope, be pardoned, as great care has been taken in trying to avoid mistakes. It is with considerable regret that the system of giving authorities for every sentence and word has been abandoned ; but, if this plan is properly carried out, it increases the bulk of a book to a tremendous extent, and, owing to the long quotations necessary, renders a genealogy rather broken ; also, if the system of giving authorities is not scrupulously adhered to, it leaves as much room for romance and false statements as there would be if no authorities were given.

He then followed the artists’ trail to London taking the 1922 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition by storm with his critically acclaimed ‘Portrait Group,’ now in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria. Shy of his success, he became a scenic artist in London theatres. After 35 years away from Australia, he returned to Melbourne where he exhibited sporadically until his death in relative obscurity in 1965.
