President’s Introduction to the 2013 Annual Report

The 2013 NSW Snowsports financial year ending 31 October 2013 has been another year of consolidation and stable financial performance for the Association. NSW Snowsports has a continued operating profit, and enough reserves to cover unforeseen expenses.

NSW Snowsports continues to work effectively with our national body (SSA) and during this financial year signed a further 2 year Services Agreement with SSA. Pleasingly, discussions will commence with SSA after the Sochi to review and actively discuss the relationship and role of the States and our National Federation. The Association continues to receive support from the NSW Department of Sport and Recreation with our Sport Development Program Grant of $33,000 and the Association once again expresses its appreciation for this support.

NSW Snowsports aims to better connect our NSW Snowsports community to various events, athlete pathways, and snowsports development programs. NSW Snowsports is continuing to build its relationship with SSA and to help develop and deliver entry level and elite programs. The Association is a member of the NSWIS Joint Management Committee which delivers the NSWIS and OWIA winter Snowsports programs.

NSW Snowsports is entirely run and managed by its Volunteer Board of Directors and through the hard work and dedication of its Discipline Committees, develops under-pinning athlete programs to continue filling the gap that exists in the athlete pathway between club and elite programs.

Annette Pilat (NSW Alpine Chair) successfully manages the joint NSWACT Alpine Program working with her ACT Snowsports colleagues. The Alpine committee works effortlessly and provides fitness testing and training sessions for athletes, encourages growth by awarding top performing interschools competitors with the NSWACT Alpine Rising Star Awards, and provides the community with the opportunity to further their skills, by conducting the only Australian accredited Alpine Officials Training Course.

Peter Ward (NSW Cross-Country Chair) and his Committee are committed to the growth of cross country within the snowsports industry. NSW cross-country athletes have been performing well at all levels, with athletes being selected for both the National Teams and NSWIS scholarships. The Nordic Shelter continues to provide a great facility for cross country skiing in NSW and a very special thanks to all XC members and supporters who contribute to the Nordic Shelter and the summer XC Trails working bees which ensure the XC trails are ready for the winter season.

Steve Cooper and the NSW Freestyle Committee once again successfully organised the Australian Freestyle Moguls Championships at Perisher that attracted international athletes. NSW Freestyle have been very successful with a number of NSW athletes selected to the NSWIS/OWIA Moguls program.

Also under the direction of Steve Cooper, the Interschools Committee organised another successful year of the Interschools Snowsports Championships, by attracting over 11 000 entries in its 26th year of Interschools Championships in NSW. Thank you to the Interschools committee, schools coordinators, parents, volunteers and students who has made this event as predominant as it is today.

This year also saw the NSW Snowsports Snowboard Sub-Committee become more involved with activities of the Association with the election of their 2nd Board Member Ellen Davis- Meehan. The Snowboard Committee has continued to run the TTR World Rookie Fest Competition which attracts international and Australian riders as well as the Australian Junior Series, the most significant junior freestyle snowboard series on the Australian calendar.

The more active involvement of the Snowboard Sub-committee in the Association has allowed all 4 of the Snowsports disciplines in NSW to work together for the benefit of member athletes. Ellen is also on our Governance sub-committee while Rosie Lappas continutes to make a very valuable contribution on insurance matters for all disciplines.

NSW Snowsports 2013 Annual Report - Page 3 !

The AMASDF operates through NSW Snowsports, with continued support from the NSW Interschools Committee. After successful fundraising efforts in 2013 and a major contribution from SERAS and the NSW Biathlon Association from its Sochi Olympic fundraising Art Show, AMASDF was able to awarded 53 athletes at total of $39 500. During its 4 years of operation, the foundation has provided $135 500 in snowsports scholarships to ’s up and coming snowsports athletes.

And of course no President’s Report in an Olympic Year would not be complete without commenting upon the wonderful achievements of our member athletes (18 in total) who were selected to the 2014 Australian Winter Olympic Team. All of our Disciplines had athletes selected to the Sochi Winter Olympic Team with many being first time Olympians and still teenagers. Some were also dual Olympians including Scott Kneller (SX), Alex Almoukov (Biathlon) and of course triple Olympians Jenny Owens (SX), Holly Crawford (HP) and multi discipline/silver medal winner Torah Bright (SB).

We hope many of those young athletes who competed in Sochi will continue on to Korea in 2018 and use the experience gained in Sochi to develop and fulfil their dreams.

To read more on the success of our NSW Snowsports and our athletes, I encourage you to read the sub- committee reports found further on within this report. Thanks to all of our NSW athletes for their dedication and sacrifice and congratulations to all who have reached their goals during 2012-13. Thanks also to the volunteer Discipline Sub-committees for providing the opportunities and supporting the athletes through the year.

On behalf of NSW Snowsports and myself, we wish all our athletes and their families all the success for the upcoming 2014 Australian Winter Season.

And don’t forget to volunteer, at every opportunity!

Toni Hulme President NSW Snowsports

NSW Snowsports Finance Director’s Report – 2012-2013

The finances of NSW Snowsports continue to be sound with enough reserves to cover unforeseen expenses. The General account and the disciplines/sub-committee accounts are all operating in a responsible and positive manner. The largest cash flow areas (Interschools and Cross Country) are both budgeting for sufficient reserves to cover the potential effects of a poor snowfall and the resulting loss of income.

This financial year followed the pattern of recent financial years. The amount of cash on hand as of 31/10/13 increased and the cash flow from operating activities remained positive.

In response to the falling interest rates, the Directors approved the establishment of a 12-month term deposit of $100,000, starting February 2013. An additional $50,000 was added to the term deposit at the start of the new period, but the period was shortened to 4 months to obtain a higher interest rate.

A credit card facility for Interschools employees was investigated and approved, but eventually rejected as difficult to fit within the current arrangement of bank accounts.

Our dedicated NSW Snowsports staff have settled into their new and adjusted roles:

• Rebecca Clark is jointly employed by SSA and NSWS. • Cathy Lambert is employed primarily by NSW Interschools with some NSWS duties, particularly in regard to NSWS finance. • Wendy Pinkerton is employed primarily by ACT Snowsports with a role in NSW Interschools. • Jo Brewis continues her position as NSWS bookkeeper • Libby Hovasapian (Alpine Auditors) will continue to pull it all together for us at the end of the financial year.

I am grateful to Jo and Libby for their professionalism, expertise and flexibility in supporting NSW Snowsports. It is an organization with an unconventional structure and a wide variety of activities. Jo and Libby have adapted to the language and financial requirements of the organization with notable patience.

Thank you also to Cathy and Bec for managing the General account, grants and all of the other financial odds and ends that end up on their desks.

2012-13 was a successful financial year for NSW Snowsports and we look forward to more of the same in 2013-14.

NSW Snowsports: Alpine Sub Committee Report

Chairperson’s Annual Report

2013 Programs and Initiatives

NSWACT Teams NSW Alpine in conjunction with ACT Alpine continued again this year to name NSWACT Senior, Junior and Children’s, teams to provide recognition and support to those athletes who are performing at a high level and who meet the published State team criteria, In 2013 we had 7 Open team members, 9 State Junior team members and 20 Children who achieved selection to the Children’s team. . By way of recognition and support to State team members, NSWACT Alpine offers subsidized State team jackets which are presented to the Children’s and Junior team members at a presentation evening and dinner in Jindabyne at the start of the southern season. This year, for the third consecutive year, we are also pleased to be able to provide a small cash grant, this year of $150, to each State Children’s team member in the U14s and U16s who competed interstate in the SSA Australian Children’s Championships. NSWACT Alpine also funded National Championship and interstate racing grants to Junior and Open team members of $250 and $300 respectively to provide some assistance towards the costs of travelling interstate to compete in National and interstate FIS events. We also, again this season, paid for the race entry fees for the Open team members to the National Alpine Championships in Thredbo.

The grant cheques to eligible State Children’s, Junior and Open team members were presented at the end of season Awards evening and the NSWACT Alpine Children’s team for 2014 was also announced.

NSWACT athletes performed very strongly at this year’s National FIS and Children’s events and were strongly represented on the National podiums and in the National Alpine team and squad selections.

This past year, NSWACT Open team member, Sam Robertson represented Australia in the Alpine World Championships held in Schladming, Austria. Sam competed in the SG event with very credible results against the best racers in the world. In the Southern season Lavinia Chrystal returned to the slopes following an injury last season and claimed the Australia Women’s Slalom title along with the ANC Women’s GS Championship and prestigious yellow bib which provides a bib 31 start in Europa Cup and other Continental Cups. We were also very pleased that 3 NSWACT State Open team members, Lavinia Chrystal, Sam Robertson and Matilda Coates were selected to the Olympic Shadow team for Sochi having achieved the Olympic A qualifying standard in one or more disciplines. Lavinia Chrystal achieved final selection for the Australian team for Sochi and represented Australia very credibly in both the GS and Slalom events. In Children’s racing, 11 NSWACT children competed in this years Whistler Cup in Canada. This year, for the first time, NSWACT Alpine entered a team in the new U14 Festival event at Whistler Cup, which enabled a larger number of children to experience this prestigious event. Australia achieved some impressive results in this year’s event with Annabelle Hough winning the U14 SL event and 4th in GS with Madi Hoffman placing 5th in U14 SL. In European International Children’s racing, we congratulate Theo Coates who successfully defended his title in the U14 Children’s Slalom event at Vratna, Slovakia.

NSWACT Alpine Programs

NSWACT Alpine Rising Stars Awards

This NSWACT Alpine program, aims to encourage some of the top performing Interschool racers to become involved with the Race clubs and SSA racing. 8 Interschool racers from Div 4 and 5 were selected to receive a free weekend of training with a race club and free entry and assistance at Blue Cow Cup We would particularly like to thank TSRC and PWSC for their assistance with this program by providing the complimentary race training weekends to Award winners. We continue to receive very positive feedback about the program with a large number of Award winners going on to join the race clubs and compete in SSA racing. A number of past winners have also represented Australia in Whistler Cup and made selection to our State teams.

SERAS

The SERAS program is open to NSW and ACT, 13 to 18 year old Snowsports athletes and provides 3 weekends of off snow, athlete development during the year. The camps, held at the Institute of Sport facilities in Canberra, provide assistance to the athletes with fitness coaching and testing as well as educational sessions on, health, goal setting and sports psychology. 3 NSW Alpine athletes participated in the 2013 SERAS Snowsports program.

Fitness testing and training Sessions

This year we have again worked closely with Manfred Wolscher, NSW Alpine and NAC, strength and conditioning advisor, to run a pre and post season fitness program which started in April with a two and a half day testing and strength and condition camp at the Sydney Institute of Sport facility at Narrabeen in Sydney. The camp was attended by about 45 child and FIS age athletes and we received very positive feedback. The camp was then followed by weekly training sessions in North Sydney and in Jindabyne. The race clubs look after dry land training during the winter season. NSW Alpine in conjunction with Manfred also organised a pre northern season testing day at the end of the September school holidays. Weekly fitness training sessions are again underway in North Sydney and Jindabyne during term 4, to help prepare those who are racing in the northern season.

This years April camp and the weekly sessions were offered to all participants on a subsidized basis due to contributions from the NAC, TSRC, PWSC and NSWACT Alpine

Alpine Officials Training Course

The Alpine Level 1 Officials course, (the only accredited program currently being conducted in Australia), was again conducted in Sydney in June 2013 for about 25 volunteers and in Jindabyne in July for about 15 volunteers. The courses were delivered by Scott Sanderson and were offered free of charge to participants due to NSW Alpine having applied for and receiving a $1500 grant from the NSW Government Department of Sport and Recreation to assist with the funding of this program.

Member Communication

Member communication continues to be a priority. The new NSW Snowsports website has enabled us to keep our website much more current. We also thank NSW Snowsports Executive Officer Rebecca Clarke for the excellent and regular e news updates sent out to members which include Alpine matters. Emails notices and news were also emailed out to our broad based communication list on a regular basis.

The NSW Alpine Face book page continues to be a great success with, with over 250 “friends” receiving our postings. Some of the more popular stories and photos received over 600 “hits”. NSW Alpine face book provides excellent coverage of what’s happening with our alpine athletes and we encourage everyone to click on like and keep up with all that’s happening in Australian alpine racing. I would like to thank Greg Lewis for excellent work with the NSW Alpine Face book postings.

NSW Snowsports 2013 Annual Report - Page 39 ! NSWACT Sponsors, Donors and Supporters program

To try and provide a sound financial basis for our athlete programs and grants and to hopefully be able to expand these moving forward, NSWACT Alpine is actively seeking Sponsors, Donors and Supporters for our 2014 programs. This year, the subcommittee looking after this, secured support from TSRC, PWSC and Candlelight Lodge Thredbo. We are very appreciative of the financial support and assistance provided by these 3 organisations and look forward to working with them again in 2014.

An Australian Sports Foundation Project was also established to enable donations to be made tax effectively. A broad based on line “Funds to Raise Campaign” was also piloted to test the appeal for this type of fund raising.

I would like particularly like to thanks Phil Coates, Gabi Robertson and for all their work on this during the year.

NSW Alpine End of Season Awards evening

This year’s Presentation and Awards evening was had in October at Middle Harbour Yacht Club. The evening was preceded by the NSW Alpine Sub Committee AGM and an information briefing session conducted by National Alpine Committee Chairman Lachlan Clarke and attended by a number of National Alpine Committee members.

Awards were presented to State Champions and runners up in all age groupings and a series improvement awards were also made to athletes making significant improvements in their FIS or SSA points.

Cheques were also presented to eligible State team members to help assist with the costs of competing during the Southern winter. Jindabyne public school was announced as the NSW Alpine school of the year and Ski Club of Australia as the ski Club of the year.

Finally, I would like to thank the NSW Alpine Committee members along with the numerous parent volunteers who gave of their time and energies during the year to assist with the running of various Alpine programs, events and races. The sport simply couldn’t function without your collective efforts.

Cross Country Chairman Report

Athlete Report

NSW athletes performed well at all levels and it is pleasing to see the newer members of our squad and team performing at high levels in their age groups, both at home and overseas. Results of most domestic races can be found on the AUS XC and Perisher Cross Country (PXC) websites. Listed below are the national team selections.

Callum Watson – World Cup Team Aimee Watson - Continental Cup Team Damon Morton and Hamish Roberts – National Squad Damon Morton, Hamish Roberts – National Junior Team Jackson Bursill – WU23 C’ships Hamish Roberts, Damon Morton, Daniel Walker and Lucy Glanville – World Junior C’Ships Callum Watson and Jackson Bursill – World University Games

The report would not be complete without mentioning the most recent Olympic Games. 4 out of 6 Australian athletes competing in XC and Biathlon in Sochi were former members of the NSW Junior Teams. The present and past XC committees can be justifiably proud to have played a part in the development of these athletes as they worked their way to the highest level of their chosen sports. Nick Almoukov laid the foundation for each of these athletes and motivated them in their formative years to strive for the highest level. We were very fortunate to have Nick as our State coach. We are also proud of the achievements attained by each of the athletes.

During the past season we were lucky to have Ben Grassechi as our main coach for about 6 weeks of the winter period. Ben was brought to Australia from California by the Australian Nordic Ski Foundation and we were able to utilize some of his time for our school holiday program and for major race support during the season. The athletes thrived under his coaching and we are grateful for his input and different perspectives. Thankyou to the ANSF for the initiative.

Michael Bull, the Athlete Management Group manager has once again given a lot of his free time organizing dry land training camps on a regular basis in Sydney and at least 2 combined camps in Jindabyne and Canberra. If we are to increase the number of skiers at the base level we need to have programs in place that provides the incentive for athletes to join. Toni Hulme and Michael also organized 2 SSA Futures Camps, one in Sydney and one at Perisher. We target Interschool competitors who have done well and invite them to participate in the camps, hoping they might enjoy the experience and want to continue with XC as a sport. The Futures program is an initiative of SSA and we are very grateful to have access to it.

I would like to thank the members of the Athlete Management Group who have assisted Michael with the training program for the last 12 months. We have access to high level coaches and support staff for our programs and I would like to thank Cameron Morton and Nick Almoukov, d’Arcy Baxter, Callum Watson, Sarah Slattery, Nick and Linky Grimmer and Ben Sim for being available to help with squad and team training. I also acknowledge the contribution of Andrew Murphy as strength and conditioning coach at the Sydney training sessions – we are fortunate to have someone of his calibre available for our athletes.

The 2013 XC Interschools event at Perisher was another highlight of the season. The few days before the competition were some of the busiest of the season with the commercial operators very busy with lessons for many of the schools competing at the State event. Quite a few of the NSW athletes who have been assisted in gaining instructor qualifications by NSWXC and K7 were able to hone their skills with the various school groups. The Nordic Shelter is joyous place when it is buzzing with juniors enjoying their time on snow.

NSW Snowsports 2013 Annual Report - Page 41 ! Nordic Shelter

The Nordic Shelter Building Fund has been closed – the extension project has been completed and the Sports Foundation Fundraising project for the extension has been wound up. We are still fundraising on a regular basis to pay for normal running costs, which are in the vicinity of $15,000/yr. As can be seen from the finance report the Nordic Shelter Operating Fund is in a very healthy position going into 2014. We plan to install more ski/boot storage areas where we can over the summer. The experiment with storage for skis and boots last season was very successful and will provide sustainable income for the Nordic Shelter. We plan to upgrade the mens and womens toilet areas, the old kitchen and repaint the outside decking areas – time permitting. I would like to thank Bruce Wharrie and Marg Hayes for managing the Nordic Shelter last season. They had a trying time with the grooming management which was mostly due to 2013 being a very poor snow year. Bruce spent many hours alleviating wet areas with new drainage systems and a shovel.

Telstra Tower at Perisher

The NSWXCC initiated objections to the building of a much larger communications tower near the Fire Station at Perisher Valley. The proposed tower would have intruded into the skyline above North Perisher. Other lobby groups and individuals also submitted objections and the final result was the Development Application being withdrawn by Telstra.

PXC

Perisher Cross Country (PXC) was formed during the last year and the NSWXCC was represented at each planning session to map out some strategies and objectives which will help to improve the infrastructure, promote the sport and recreational activities of cross country skiing and hopefully increase participation. The PXC meetings are attended by many and various people with diverse interests in the sport. The main achievement was the building of a website - www.perisherxcountry.org. This is the place where you can find out lots of things about cross country skiing - it is a source of information about the many parts that make up our sport. The first major project apart from the website was the promotion of XC Week at Perisher. There were a few new activities for the week and the week ended with a Saturday night party at the old Valley Inn – now known as the Perisher Manor. Wayne Pethybridge is to be congratulated for his endeavor and single mindedness to make PXC work. 2014 will be bigger and better for XC at Perisher.

Trail Work Parties

Work parties at the Nordic Shelter and trails at Perisher are continuing and are being held on the first weekends of February, March, April and May. We continue to receive strong support from the NPWS with trail development and we are eternally grateful for that support. We also receive strong support from members of the Canberra Cross Country Ski Club at each working bee. Free accommodation is provided by the Canberra Alpine Club at Perisher. The weekends end up being a very social affair as well as achieving positive improvements with the trail system.

In closing I would like to thank the members of the NSW XCC for their combined efforts during the past 12 months – we have many new faces in our group and it is a pleasure to work with you all as we endeavour to provide the opportunities for athletes and recreational skiers to have fun with cross country skiing – at whatever level they choose.

NSW Freestyle Moguls Report

The NSW Freestyle Mogul Snowsports community had another very successful Domestic Winter Season. Our appreciation goes to the NSW Resorts and our sponsors for their continued support of Freestyle Mogul events, through:

• The NSW / ACT / Australian Interschool’s Snowsports Series – 4 days of competition at Regional & State Level, held at both Perisher and Thredbo ski resorts. • The NSW Junior and Youth Mogul Series competition at Perisher. Unfortunately this event had to be cancelled due to marginal snow conditions; this was disappointing as it was the second year in a row we have had to cancel the event due to bad weather or lack of snow. • The Australian Freestyle Moguls Championships – 2 x Super Continental Cup Single Mogul events for Australian and International Open & Junior athletes held at Perisher. Australia's top mogul skiers - members of the OWIA & NSWIS National teams as well the Perisher Winter Sports Club and TBR mogul teams competed, together with a large number of International teams and athletes from the USA, Japan, Korea, China, Iran, Germany, Great Britain & Spain on Australia's World Cup mogul’s course – ‘Toppa’s Dream’.

Also training on Toppa’s Dream this domestic season were teams & athletes from Canada, Sweden & Czech Republic.

Resort Appreciation • Perisher continued their strong support of the Australian Freestyle Mogul Championships together with their long-term investment in the future of the sport with a world standard moguls course at ‘Toppa’s Dream’ Blue Cow Mountain. • Thredbo are also to be commended for providing a full time mogul training facility (Interschool’s standard) under the direction of Mike Haid from Canada. Mike was employed by Thredbo to maintain the mogul training facility on a run now designated for specific mogul’s training for the local devo program and the NSW Interschool’s mogul competitions. Thredbo have confirmed this is a 3 year trail with full budget approved.

Coach, Manager & Judges Appreciation • Our vote of thanks are extended to the fantastic contributions made by Australia’s world-class coaching staff > Steve Desovich, Peter Topalovic & Jerry Grossi, who were ably supported by Peter McNiel, Georgie Chapman-Leel, Eliza Graham, Sean Andrews , Alex Cassilles & Josh Himbury. • An additional vote of thanks to Rayna Green and Toppa for their work in developing and organizing the annual SSA Futures Moguls Talent ID Camp, which links in with the NSW Junior Moguls Event. • Paul Livissianos continues to shine as the NSW Judging coordinator and many thanks for his efforts this domestic season.

Parent Appreciation • The efforts of a number of parents who supported the work of the Freestyle Community throughout the year with event support and organisation, as always, cannot be understated. • And finally many thanks to Steve Cooper who does a great job of supporting freestyle in NSW. Steve is there at every Freestyle moguls event, and his humorous live commentary on the loudspeaker at the bottom of every mogul competition keeps the smiles on everyone’s faces - sometimes people forget that sport is meant to be fun!

Sponsors Appreciation • Event Supplies financially supported the Australian Mogul Championship through direct financial support for the FIS standard race-bibs for the NSW Junior Moguls Series Event, and the major glass-plate trophies for the Australian Moguls Championships. • SSA – Ski and Snowboard Australia waivered all FIS sanction fees for the Super Continental Cup competition.

NSW Snowsports 2013 Annual Report - Page 43 ! Other Business/ 2014 domestic season planning • NSW (Perisher freestyle mogul’s competitions) are under threat financially for next year. Effectively NSW Freestyle has no money left in the bank. Every second year has been successful in applying for a State Government grant to pay for the Australian Freestyle Mogul Championships & NSW Junior Series over a 2 year period. Due to the new rules of Grant application implemented this financial year, NSW Freestyle are no longer eligible to apply for this grant. • On a positive note, as of last week Peter McNiel has been successful in gaining support from Perisher to pay for the NSW Junior Series for 2014. • Unfortunately it looks like Thredbo will need a replacement for Mike Haid next year and beyond, as it is highly unlikely Mike will return in that role. All efforts required from the committee to find a suitable replacement to maintain the Thredbo mogul training facility. • The SSA Futures Mogul Camp may not happen next year as the heart and soul of the program Rayna Green will be away on long service leave. The same applies to Paul Livissianos our judging coordinator who will be away with Rayna; Paul will make himself available to judge at any Europa Cup or World Cup competitions this coming 2013-14 NH winter. The Australian Junior Series (AJS) is the premier junior event in Australia and it focuses on participation for riders of all levels and abilities in a safe and fun environment. It is a national event with previous stops in NSW and Victoria and has included Halfpipe, , Big Air and Boarder Cross. The Burton Australian Junior Series 2013 took place at Perisher on the 8th – 10th August. The event included Slope Style, Half Pipe and Boarder Cross disciplines; although the Boarder Cross had to be cancelled due to poor weather conditions.

The slopestyle event was held on the 8th August with 14 female and 42 male competitors. The highest scoring female was Mahalah Mullins and male was Harry Green. The halfpipe event was held on the 10th August with 15 female and 31 male competitors. The highest scoring female was Mahalah Mullins and male was Matthew Cox.

AJS Sponsorship. The NSW Snowboard Committee is grateful to all our valued sponsors who have continued to support and help develop the growth of Junior Snowboarding in Australia. Special thanks this year to Burton who sponsored $5000 for naming rights. This money did not go through the NSW Snowboard Committee but went straight to Perisher, along with registration fees, to cover the costs of hosting the event. Sponsors included:

• Perisher Resort • Burton • POW Board Store • Moutainwatch.com • Dragon • Monster Skate Park • Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA)

Australian Rookie Fest 2013 The 4th Australian Rookie Fest was held at Thredbo on the 23rd – 24th August, 2012. The event was once again held on High Noon due to high winds on Antons.

The event attracted 26 athletes, 18 males and 8 females. The winners were: • Rookie Male Isak Ulstein () • Rookie Female Mahalah Mullins (AUS) • Grom Male Joshua Vagne (AUS) • Grom Female Zahra Kell (AUS)

A big thankyou to our judges Adam Beggs, Ben Mates and Charlie Steinbacher.

The World Snowboard Federation (WSF) brought out a delegation of 5 people (1 delegate, 4 athletes and one of the athlete’s grandfather) to Australia for a 2 week tour, with a focus on the Australian Rookie Fest. The event now has a strong connection with the WSF and the World Rookie Tour, with the male winners of the Rookie and Grom divisions of the World Rookie Fest Finals in Ischgl Austria winning an entry to the event. The delegation went on to compete in The Mile High at Perisher and to spend some time in Sydney following the event.

The event was organised once again by Stuart and Ellen Davis-Meehan from the Snowboarding Sub- Committee of NSW Snowsports. Funding of $5,000 was received from the NSW Dept. of Sport and Recreation, International Sporting Events Program.

Prizes to the overall value of $10,000 were won by podium winners in each of the categories and included: • All podium placegetters qualified for the World Rookie Fest Finals in Ischgl Austria in April, 2014. • The male and female winners of the rookie division won free entry and accommodation to the World Rookie Fest Finals. They also won $1,000 from Red Bull toward the cost of travel to the event. • The male and female winners of the rookie and grom divisions won a flight in the Red Bull stunt plane. • All first placegetters won a Gold Pass to Monster Skate Park in Sydney. • Assorted prizes including Semantics clothing, product from Adrenaline Boardstore.

Sponsors included World Snowboard Federation, NSW Snowsports, Thredbo, Red Bull, Adrenaline Boardstore in Canberra, Monster Skate Park and Semantics.

Other International Results

The international competition scene has been dominated by Olympic selections. NSW riders who made the Shadow Team were in Halfpipe Torah Bright, Nate Johnstone, Holly Crawford, Steph Magiros, Amber Arazny and Alex Fitch, in Slopestyle Torah Bright and Michaela Davis-Meehan and in Boardercross Torah Bright, and Jarryd Hughes. OWIA athletes had a quieter year than 2012, qualifying early and focusing on training. Jarryd Hughes was the form Boardercross rider with great results all year, culminating in his World Cup Gold in Lake Louise. In Slope Torah achieved a 3rd in Stoneham in January and Michaela Davis-Meehan an 11th at the World Cup in NZ in August. Both Torah and Nate put the world on notice winning the Copper World Cup / Grand Prix in early 2013 in HP. Holly Crawford got a second in HP in the Sochi World Cup.

Although for next year’s report it is worth mentioning that Torah’s results have been outstanding being the first snowboard athlete to qualify for 3 events at the Olympics. Torah brought home the Silver medal in HP and a top ten performance in Slopestyle.

Stand out development riders have been Mahalah Mullins, Josh Vagne, Joel Cantle, Matty Cox, Joss McAlpin, Josh Crisp, Emily Arthur, Cassie Fortune, Laura Whitehead and Georgia Baff. With no development funding or sponsored programs available these young athletes struggle to meet their overseas training and competition commitments.

Perisher Winter Sports Club and the private TSC Development program from Victoria, which created a base in Thredbo in 2013, underpin the development of young riders in NSW.

Congratulations to all our NSW Snowboard riders and athletes from the young riders competing in their first Australian Junior Series through to members of Australian Teams competing at World Cup and on the World Snowboard Tour.

NSW Snowsports Snowboarding Sub-Committee consists of: Rosie Lappas, Ellen Davis-Meehan, Stuart Davis-Meehan, Darren Hughes, Peter Baff, Chad Collier, Sandra Fitch, Paul Colby, Rob Fortune, Cathy Lambert and Darren Crisp.

Insurance Interschools Insurance was provided by the All-States Insurance body, and there have been no claims to date for 2013. NSW Interschools supported the SSA insurance/membership initiative SnowRacer, via providing a SnowRacer section on the participant and volunteer waiver.

I.T Management/ Website/ Email Correspondence Due to ownership issues between the Snow Sports Development Foundation (SSDF) and Ski and Snowboard Australia (SSA) in relation to the Victorian Interschools Championships, NSW Interschools went into a partnership with SSA with the joint Interschools National website. New domain names were secured for the website. NSW Interschools also developed a new online entry system in partnership with SSA. The new online entry system allows volunteer management, more efficient team entry procedures, additional invoice information, and alerts on the home page.

Go to http://interschoolssnowsports.com.au

Public Address Systems The use of public address systems on-snow again proved to be highly beneficial in the promotion of Interschools, our sponsors, our website, resort services, general event information, and most importantly, the skiers/boarders on-course and the schools they come from.

Participation / Marketing Interschools participation rates continued to grow across all Regions and in all events. Regular newsletters were emailed out to School Coordinators and parents, and proved to be a powerful tool in providing up-to-date information and promotion of our sponsors.

NSW Snowsports 2013 Annual Report - Page 48 ! Publicity / Promotion The publicity and promotion of Interschools Snowsports Events was both State-wide and snowsports specific. In 2013, we developed and distributed an A3 promotional poster. Currently we are working on an Interschools Handbook which will detail important information.

Regional Interschools Boundaries in NSW All new schools joining the competition for the first time continue to be placed in the Northern Region, as we would like to increase entries into the Northern event to balance numbers and the level of competition. This system has worked well in the last 10 years.

Resort Agreements All parties were pleased with the management and organisation of the 2013 events. The numbers and financial benefit that the events bring to the resorts; the introduction of new initiatives; the positive work between the committee, the respective race departments, and the resorts’ senior management groups, was to be applauded.

Interschools appreciate the strong support and assistance of both Perisher and Thredbo Kosciusko Management Teams and Race Departments in running the Interschools events.

Risk Management and Policies The NSW Interschools Risk Management Policy is available on the About Interschools page of the website at http://nswinterschools.com.au, and covers 10 identified areas. No major accidents were recorded in this year’s events. A risk assessment was detailed for each event, as per the NSW Snowsports Risk Assessment Policy. Wendy Pinkerton and Cathy Lambert have completed Working With Children Checks.

Rule changes / additions in 2013 A copy of the 2013 Rules can be downloaded at http://nswinterschools.com.au

NSW Snowsports Clubs Report

Insurance Membership with the provision of insurance is the most visible connection between the clubs and NSW Snowsports. It is an important connection, as it is a service that NSWS can provide to clubs through supporting their snow related activities and, at the same time, helps NSWS obtain the insurance it requires for its many events and activities. Insurance is one of NSW Snowsports single most important projects and we thank all participating clubs for their support. If your club isn’t participating, please consider joining in.

On-snow Activities On-snow interaction between Clubs and NSW Snowsports tends to be centred around the more traditional skiing disciplines, namely Alpine and Cross Country.

NSWS Cross Country is mainly Perisher Range-based and works closely with Perisher X-Country to support a number of clubs with XC events during the winter season. Most of these are citizen events with long, colourful histories. NSWXC is pleased to be able to provide personnel, skidoo support, equipment, timing, courses and the facilities of the Nordic Shelter, when needed. The clubs, and SLOPES, are wonderful supporters of the Shelter and cross-country skiing in NSW.

History NSW Snowsports continues to promote historical events of our clubs and the snowsports industry, through our support of the Perisher and Thredbo Historical Societies by linking websites and moving forward in preserving and consolidating archives.

NSWIS Report

NSW Snowsports continued as a member of the NSWIS Joint Management Committee for the Winter Snowsports Program during 2012/13. This Committee meets twice a year and is tasked with selecting and ratifying athletes who are nominated for NSWIS Scholarships, reviewing athlete performance on an annual basis and determining Coaches and Programs. NSWIS operates the Winter Snowsports program in conjunction with OWI (Olympic Winter Institute) and SSA (Ski and Snowsport Australia).

45 athletes were selected to NSWIS programs for 2013-14 leading into the Sochi Winter Olympic Games with NSW Snowsports member athletes making up the majority of athletes. NSWIS provides programs for athletes in the disciplines of Snowboard HP, Bordercross, Skier Cross and Freestyle Moguls. Athletes competing in the Disciplines of Alpine skiing, Cross country, Slopestyle and Biathlon are selected on Individual Scholarships. NSWIS Individual Scholarships also include athletes in Ice Disciplines such as figure skating, bobsled and skeleton.

World Class – Gold = 8 athletes International Class – Gold = 7 athletes International Development Class – Silver = 14 athletes Potential (Emerging) International Class – Green = 4 athletes

Squad Total = 33 Athletes

Individual scholarships = 12 athletes

Program Total = 45 Athletes

Selection to an NSWIS program requires an athlete to achieve one of the above criteria which looks at athletes who have the potential to represent Australia at an Olympic Games, World Championships or World Cup. The Target Athlete group and structure of the NSWIS programs is outlined below, together with the General Selection Criteria that NSWIS applied for the selection of athletes.

Target Athlete Group The NSWIS program generally aters for senior elite development athletes who are likely to represent Australia at the World Cup, World Championships & Olympic level.

Structure The NSWIS program is a decentralized program operating from the NSWIS, Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre, Perisher and Thredbo and other identified venues both domestically and international.

General Selection of NSWIS Athletes Scholarships will be filled on a combination of the athlete’s:

• Performance at nominated events • Fitness and athletic ability • Technical competence • “Tactical Nous” – tactical ability in relation to each Winter Sports discipline • Potential to improve and progression • Competitive ability • Individual application in training and competition • Team/Squad orientation – ability to ‘fit in’ • Specific sport standards/technical considerations

Performances to be considered must be recorded at National and International body sanctioned competition and must be achieved within the 12 months prior to selection. Subjectivity is an unavoidable part of athlete selection where potential to perform is being assessed.

NSW Snowsports 2013 Annual Report - Page 52 ! NSWIS is an important pathway for NSW snowsports athletes who wish to progress to the elite level. Each Discipline of Alpine, Cross Country, Snowboard and Freestyle operate development and state based programs which assist athletes to progress from development level to the NSWIS elite level. NSWIS assists athletes with coaching, international competition and varying degrees of financial support. Physiotherapy services, sports medicine, nutrition and educational services also form part of the package of services available to NSWIS athletes.

As with all NSWIS programs, there is a review of the Program and its funding levels after an Olympic Games and this will occur for the NSWIS Wintersports program after Sochi.

NSWIS is an important pathway for NSW Snowsports athletes and NSW Snowsports is fortunate to be part of the Committee that administers the NSWIS Winter Snowsports program.

South Eastern Regional Academy of Sport (SERAS) Report for NSW Snowsports AGM 2013

The SERAS (South East Regional Academy of Sport) Snowsports Program is an introductory level program for NSW and ACT Snowsports athletes of all disciplines contemplating a pathway to the elite level. It introduces athletes between the ages of 12 and 18 to what is required to become an elite snowsports athlete including fitness testing, physiological screening, strength and conditioning programs, nutrition, sports psychology and public speaking.

Athletes who are members of NSW Snowsports are invited to apply for a SERAS scholarship in November each year. Up to 20 athletes are selected from Alpine, Freestyle, Snowboard and Cross Country. Snowsports scholarship holders attend a two day Education Program at the University of Canberra with athletes from all SERAS programs, and two 2 day dry-land training camps specifically for Snowsports athletes, utilising the facilities of the University of Canberra and the AIS. Each Snowsports discipline sets its own criteria for selection to a SERAS scholarship and recommends which athletes should be awarded scholarships.

The 18 current SERAS Snowsport scholarship holders are:

Snowboard – Geneva Guy and Drew Turner Moguls – Cooper Woods and Maddison Everingham Alpine/Skiercross – Tristan Yip, Montana Byers, Tahlia and Ethan Jacskon, Antonia and Charlotte Murphy, Isabella Oatley, Jordan Thompson and Jakob Winkler Cross Country – Tess Bradford, Declan Burke, Nelle Foster-Berghuis, Will Neuhaus and Hamish Roberts

The SERAS Snowsports program commenced in 2008 and this year seven former scholarship holders were selected in the Australian Winter Olympics team which competed in Sochi.

Amelia McGuiness Australian Snowsports Development Foundation Report

In 2010 the Amelia McGuiness Australian Snowsports Development Foundation was established following the tragic death of passionate skier Amelia McGuiness. Amelia was a student at Barker College, Sydney and represented both Barker and Tara annually during her High School years at the Interschool’s Snowsports competitions.

AMASDF was established with the goal to support our countries young snowsports athletes as they chase their dream to represent Australia internationally.

2013 Fundraising Events June – AMASDF held a movie night at Chatswood Hoyts, with a screening of the Great Gatsby. The night was a great success with $4,700 raised.

August – NSW Biathlon (the SSO for Biathlon in NSW) held a fund-raising Art Show on 1st August 2013, with funds raised going to support NSW Biathlon athletes selected in the Sochi 2014 Shadow Olympic Team. As part of the Art Show, NSW Biathlon donated 20% of the funds raised to the Amelia McGuiness Australian Snowsports Development Foundation, in recognition of the support the Fund provides to up and coming Snowsports athletes.

All the works of art were donated by the artist Evelyna Helmer, who is a very supportive Biathlon parent. In total $4,900 was donated to the AMASDF

August – Wednesday 25th was the annual Memorial Time Trial at Perisher. Entries were capped at 250 with a new format for the day. With assistance and support from the Perisher staff and race department we introduced Skier cross, run simultaneously with the Alpine course. This proved a popular format, giving entrants the opportunity to practise both disciplines. The day concluded with a presentation at Jax Bar with a Chocolate Wheel and live auction. This was well attended and was supported by donations from Perisher, Event Supplies, Georges River Trophies, Rossignol, Thredbo, local businesses, individuals and companies across Australia. Total fund raised on the day was $27,000.

SUBARU Australia established an association with AMASDF in 2013 by way of committing to a 1 year deal supplying a Subaru Outback Diesel vehicle. The vehicle is being driven by Amelia’s parents, Cathy and Sam McGuiness , and has been an effective tool to promote AMASDF due to the eye catching decals displayed across all panels of the car.

SERAS (South East Regional Academy for Sport) 2013 was the second consecutive year of support from SERAS. They contributed $2000 to AMASDF to assist with our commitment to support snowsport athletes in a practical way.

AUSTRALIAN SPORTS FOUNDATION (ASF) continues to support AMASDF through the Australian Sport Incentive Program. In November 2013 the project was due for renewal following the completion of our 4 year agreement. ASF is satisfied with the direction of our project and have committed to another 4 year agreement. This will enable AMASDF to maintain tax deductible status for future donations.

AMASDF Scholarships In 2013 the committee was again overwhelmed by the number of applications received. The introduction of an online application process proved successful and assisted with streamlining the foundation. Athletes were required to complete the selection criteria to be considered for a scholarship. The committee then consulted with industry leaders to determine the successful applicants.

A total 53 athletes were awarded a scholarship: 14 Alpine , 12 XC/ Biathlon, 13 Freestyle, 12 Snowboard and 2 DWA.

2013 -In total we allocated $39,500
