Educator Activity Booklet to the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum Field trips to the Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum include a guided tour through USS Razorback submarine and an optional age appropriate scavenger hunt through our museum. Students have a limited time at the facility, so completing activities with students at school will help them better understand submarines. There are some activities that introduce students to what submarines are and how they work; while others are follow up activities. There are four main subject areas covered: English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Geography. The activities are organized by grade level then by subject area. Kindergarten—Second Grade……………………………………………………2 Third—Fifth Grade…………………………………………………………………6 Sixth—Eighth Grade………………………………………………………………11 Ninth—Twelfth Grade……………………………………………………………..16 Appendix……………………………………………………………………………18 If your class would like to take a field trip to the Museum please contact us by calling (501) 371-8320 or emailing [email protected]. We offer tours to school groups Wednesday through Saturday 10:00 AM to dusk and Sunday 1:00 PM to dusk. We do give special rates to school groups who book their field trips in advance. Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum | Educator Activity Booklet 1 Kindergarten through Second Grade English Language Arts A fun way to introduce young students to what a submarine is before visiting is by reading The Magic School Bus on the Ocean Floor to your students. The teacher should explain that while the bus turned into a “submarine” it is different from a submarine that is used in warfare. After your class has visited the museum the class can create an anchor chart that shows the new vocabulary they learned.

Tax collections were at an all-time high, utilization of the convention center continued to grow, new hotels and amenities were added to the destination, and the Robinson renovation project continued to make progress and remained on-time for completion in November 2016. A very exciting addition to the destination in 2015 was the opening of the Outlets at Little Rock, Arkansas’s only outlet mall; and largest outdoor shopping center. Home to almost 75 businesses, and more development in the works, the center will be a huge draw for leisure tourism. In 2014, LRCVB retained Crossroads Consulting to conduct a feasibility study for a potential indoor, multi-purpose, sports facility. The final study was presented in March 2015 and evaluated the overall economic potential and quality of life impact of sporting events, as well as provided an analysis for building and operating the facility. Funding for the development of such a facility remains to be explored. Financially, LRCVB continued to experience significant revenue growth, with total tax collections up 6.57% over 2014, fueled by strong performances in both prepared food and hotel room sales.

Beneath the ground, the wooden casket I am trapped in is being lowered deeper and deeper into the cold, dark earth. Fear overtakes me as I fall into a paralytic state. I can hear the dirt being shoveled over me. My heart pounds through my chest. I can’t scream, and if I could, who would hear me? Just as the final shovel of soil is being packed tightly over me, I convulse out of my nightmare into the sweat- and urine-soaked bed in the small apartment on the island of Manhattan that my family calls home. Shaken and disoriented, I make my way out of the tiny back bedroom into the pitch-dark living room, where my mother and father sleep on a convertible couch. I stand at the foot of their bed just staring … waiting.

Don DeLillo’s Promiscuous Fictions: The Adulterous Triangle of Sex, Space, and Language Diana Marie Jenkins A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The School of English University of NSW, December 2005 This thesis is dedicated to the loving memory of a wonderful grandfather, and a beautiful niece. I wish they were here to see me finish what both saw me start. Contents Acknowledgements 1 Introduction 2 Chapter One 26 The Space of the Hotel/Motel Room Chapter Two 81 Described Space and Sexual Transgression Chapter Three 124 The Reciprocal Space of the Journey and the Image Chapter Four 171 The Space of the Secret Conclusion 232 Reference List 238 Abstract This thesis takes up J. G. Ballard’s contention, that ‘the act of intercourse is now always a model for something else,’ to show that Don DeLillo uses a particular sexual, cultural economy of adultery, understood in its many loaded cultural and literary contexts, as a model for semantic reproduction. I contend that DeLillo’s fiction evinces a promiscuous model of language that structurally reflects the myth of the adulterous triangle. The thesis makes a significant intervention into DeLillo scholarship by challenging Paul Maltby’s suggestion that DeLillo’s linguistic model is Romantic and pure. My analysis of the narrative operations of adultery in his work reveals the alternative promiscuous model. I discuss ten DeLillo novels and one play – Americana, Players, The Names, White Noise, Libra, Mao II, Underworld, the play Valparaiso, The Body Artist, Cosmopolis, and the pseudonymous Amazons – that feature adultery narratives.

  • Arkansas Queen
ARKANSAS QUEEN When the Arkansas Queen dinner boat needed a steel deck coating system deserving of a beautifully restored 1950s era paddle wheeler, the project team called Tnemec coating consultant Arthur Valentine into service. “It was looking pretty rough,” Valentine recalled. “A steel deck tends to have more movement than a concrete deck, especially when exposed to varying temperatures, so we needed a flexible underlayment that would have some movement characteristics.” The top deck’s surface was prepared in accordance with SSPC-SP11 Power Tool Cleaning to Bare Metal. “It was a steel floor, so they couldn’t abrasive blast it like they would a concrete floor,” according to Valentine. Hi-Tech Epoxy Floor Company used diamond grinders with dust muzzles to grind and peel off the old coatings down to 99.9 percent bare metal. Series 206 Sub-Flex EP, a flexible epoxy, was roller-applied, followed by a light gray topcoat of Series 291 CRU, a polyester polyurethane. Skid-resistant beads were added to Series 291 to create a safer walking surface. “We detailed every inch of it with urethane caulking around all the edges and portholes,” Victor Wheetley with Hi-Tech Epoxy Floor Company acknowledged. “It turned out beautiful, and it’s still holding up.” The Arkansas Queen is located on the Arkansas River in downtown North Little Rock on the site of the Arkansas Inland Maritime PROJECT INFORMATION Museum. Home to the former attack submarine the USS Razorback, the museum also includes the USS Hoga harbor tug, which served in the Pearl Harbor area throughout World War II and is best known for Project Location her actions during the Pearl Harbor attack.

(Ph.D., History) The Emigrant Métis of Kansas: Rethinking the Pioneer Narrative Dissertation directed by Associate Professor Ralph Mann Under the U.S. government’s nineteenth century Indian removal policies, more than ten thousand Eastern Indians, mostly Algonquians from the Great Lakes region, relocated in the 1830s and 1840s beyond the western border of Missouri to what today is the state of Kansas. With them went a number of mixed-race people – the métis, who were born of the fur trade and the interracial unions that it spawned. This dissertation focuses on métis among one emigrant group, the Potawatomi, who removed to a reservation in Kansas that sat directly in the path of the great overland migration to Oregon and California.
