The comparison of Census data from 2001 and 2011about the ethnic diversity of the Christian population, which is set out in this report, is one element of the work the Council for Christian Unity is doing with a variety of partners in this area. We are very pleased to be working with the Research and Statistics Department and the Committee for Minority Ethnic Anglican Affairs at Church House, and with Churches Together in England on a number of fronts. We hope that the set of eight reports, for each of the eight regions of England, will be a helpful resource for Church Leaders, Dioceses, Districts and Synods, Intermediate Ecumenical Bodies and local churches. -

The Concept of Identity in the East Midlands of England NATALIE BRABER Investigating feelings of identity in East Midlands adolescents Introduction When considering dialectal variation in the UK, linguists have frequently considered the North/South divide and the linguistic markers separating the two regions (see for example Trudgill, 1999; Wells, 1986). But it has been noted that this is not a straightforward division (e.g. Beal, 2008; Goodey, Gold, Duffett & Spencer, 1971; Montgomery, 2007; Wales, 2002). There are clear stereotypes for the North and South – but how do areas like the East Midlands fit into the picture? The boundaries between North and South are defined in different ways. Beal’s linguistic North does not include the East Midlands (Beal, 2008: 124- 5), neither does Wales’ (2002: 48). Trudgill states that in traditional dialectology the East Midlands area falls under ‘Central’ dialects, which come under the ‘Southern’ branch, but in modern dialectology it falls in the ‘North’. Hughes, Trudgill and Watt (2005: 70) contains a map which has the East Midlands in the North. Linguistically, the question has been raised whether there is a clear North/South boundary (see for example Upton (2012) where it is proposed that it is a transition zone). This paper revisits this question from the point of view of young people living in the East Midlands, to examine their sense of identity and whether this cultural divide is salient to them. The East Midlands is a problematic area in its definition geographically, and people may have difficulty in relating this to their own sense of identity. -

The large majority of children and families with the most pressing needs remain in contact until their needs are met. Outreach work is particularly effective in helping families during times of crises. Strong collaborative work, including that with specialist services, ensures that families receive timely, well-integrated support. Case files are maintained to a good standard. Centre activities are of good quality. Children with communication problems are supported well in their learning and development. The take up of free education by three and four year-olds is high. The gap in achievement between those children at risk of falling behind and the rest is narrowing. Parents from priority groups benefit from well-resourced activities that improve their personal skills and self-esteem. The strong focus on positive behaviour management helps many to build confident parenting skills. Mothers and children experiencing domestic abuse receive tailor-made support to help keep them safe and enhance their well-being. Volunteering is promoted successfully and offers a clear pathway for a high number of parents to enhance their experience and skills and move into paid work. -

An accelerator sustainability and transformation partnership (STP) area, chaired by the county council director of adult services, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire was unique in including a workstream on housing and the environment in their initial plan. Successful collaboration is down to strong senior leadership, the ability to take measured risks and a recognition that no single part of the system on its own can offer people the best in terms of health and wellbeing. Integration: what works? Integration is often considered in terms of organisations and structures. Nottingham and Nottinghamshire wanted to nd evidence of what works for people in terms of integration. The Local Government Association (LGA) funded evaluation research into the effect of local integrated primary care teams. Teams consist of social workers, GPs, therapists, nursing and voluntary service staff. The research explored the level of integration of each of the teams and compared the outcomes achieved by them to the outcomes achieved by equivalent non-integrated structures. Outcomes of the integrated care model Nottingham Trent University found evidence of a positive correlation between outcomes for people using services (including hospital avoidance) and cost-effectiveness, and the level of integration of the team.
