SCHOLARSHIPS 1992 : Scholarship in the program, ERASMUS ECTS, for development of part of the doctoral thesis at “University Utrecht Holland”, funded by the National Research Institute for the academic year 1992-1993. AREAS OF SCIENTIFIC INTEREST The areas of scientific interest are focused on: Study of Bioorganic associations’ antipollution action Concretely the behavior of bioorganic compounds that contain polar teams, (carboxylic, amino, phosphoric) which interact with water molecules is studied. This behavior was studied in the frames of doctoral thesis and the results of this research are proposed for application in antipollution technologies in sectors like humid fuels, detergent, humid hospital waste, so as to they are rendered friendlier to the environment at their use. For this purpose, several hydrophilic polymer have been selected to study (synthetically and naturally) eg, thermic polyaspartic anion (TPA), resin from Pinus helepensis, betaine, macromolecular organic compounds, organic solvents. The ability of these compounds to interact with water molecules was studied, in order to remove the humidity in products like fuels and improve their physicochemical attributes (which constitutes the main field of application of inquiring process), in order that at their combustion they cause less polluting charge and they give bigger energy output. In fuels the compound TRA, RESIN were used. Also the use of betaine in the detergents was studied, so that they will be friendlier to the environment after their use. The management of total organic charge of humid hospital waste was also studied so that they are not considered so dangerous for the environment. Below, the course of inquiring process is presented succinctly. A) Applied techniques 1. Techniques of qualitative control of physicochemical attributes of products of distillation of oil according to the international process of control ASTM. - With this way the prices of certain physicochemical attributes are determined in products of oil like humidity ASTM D-1744, viscociy ASTM D-445, conductivity ASTM D-2624, density ASTM D-1298, point of ignition ASTM D-93, distillation ASTM D-86, thermal faculty ASTD-4809, and several others so that their appropriateness and consequently their use to overload the indicators of environmental pollution are certified. 2. Technique of reception and analysis of spectra of Nuclear Magnetic Co- ordination (NMR) cores 1H, 13C, 14N, 31P. With this process information on the configuration and the attributes of molecule can be extracted, especially when they are organic macromolecules, so that their behavior is forecasted e.g. when they are found in their watery solutions, while the possibility of identification of bioorganic substances is given even at very small concentrations in their solutions. With the application of this technique dynamic attributes were studied: in water solutions of amino-acids, nucleotides or phospholipids. 3. Technique of analysis of total organic charge of humid contagious hospital waste, via the measurements, COD, BOD, and TOC, with the method spectrometer HACH DR/2000. With this way the value of total organic charge is measured in the humid hospital waste so that it is possible the estimate their biodegradation in order to propose further process of management and treatment so that finally they are not dangerous for the environment 4. Technique of composition and qualitative control of homogenized products of cleaning in humid form in determined constitution. This process is perfomred in stainless reservoirs suitably regulated following strictly the course of composition of final products, humid detergents of domestic use. With this way the total organic charge of final product is calculated so that it can be biodegradable after its use, while indicators of appropriateness are certified eg acidity, erosive faculty, volatility so that it is not dangerous at its use. B) Results of the research 1. Study of dynamic and modeled attributes of bioorganic compounds. The water solutions of bioorganic compounds that contain polar teams were studied during the doctoral thesis and the conclusions were developed later for the use of compounds in the antipollution technologies. Based on the previously mentioned, the composition of hydrophilic polymer TPA and the use of the synthetic polymer resin which contain polar teams for the removal of humidity from conventional and alternative fuels were proposed, as well as the use betaine in detergents. The results of this inquiring process were published and they were presented in approved international journals and proceeding of congresses as in national conferences, while for the completion of the inquiring process a research program was also carried out, which is fulfilled. RESEARCH PROGRAMS PENED 91,1 /1 /1994- 31/ 12/ 1995 2. Sector of humid fuels In humid fuels diesel, kerosene, petrol, and biodiesel the possibility of optimisation of their physicochemical attributes was studied with the use of the synthetic polymer [TPA] - Thermic Polyaspartic Anion and the natural polymer resin as product of Pinus halepensis. The results showed that after the use multilateral the humidity of fuels was decrease in a significant degree, above 50%, and their physicochemical attributes, like the point of ignition, conductivity, were improved, while the values of their parameters of appropriateness like density, viscocity, were not altered. Finally it should is reported that their thermal faculty was significantly increased. The humidity contained in fuels is responsible for a series of problems both in level of combustion, the achievement of conditions of perfect combustion is impeded so that is produced in the products of combustion bigger percentage of unburned hydrocarbons, CO, C, as well as in level of combustion machines for the smooth course of combustion and the minimisation of pollution owed to them. The removal of humidity and the optimisation of attributes of fuels enable their use as products friendlier to the environment with perceptibly decreased pollutants emission, thus a perspective in the intense problem of environmental pollution from their increased use today. The results of this inquiring process were also published and presented in approved international journal and proceeding of congresses as in national congresses as well. • The Statistical Battle for the Population of Greek Macedonia
XII. The Statistical Battle for the Population of Greek Macedonia by Iakovos D. Michailidis Most of the reports on Greece published by international organisations in the early 1990s spoke of the existence of 200,000 “Macedonians” in the northern part of the country. This “reasonable number”, in the words of the Greek section of the Minority Rights Group, heightened the confusion regarding the Macedonian Question and fuelled insecurity in Greece’s northern provinces.1 This in itself would be of minor importance if the authors of these reports had not insisted on citing statistics from the turn of the century to prove their points: mustering historical ethnological arguments inevitably strengthened the force of their own case and excited the interest of the historians. Tak- ing these reports as its starting-point, this present study will attempt an historical retrospective of the historiography of the early years of the century and a scientific tour d’horizon of the statistics – Greek, Slav and Western European – of that period, and thus endeavour to assess the accuracy of the arguments drawn from them. For Greece, the first three decades of the 20th century were a long period of tur- moil and change. Greek Macedonia at the end of the 1920s presented a totally different picture to that of the immediate post-Liberation period, just after the Balkan Wars. This was due on the one hand to the profound economic and social changes that followed its incorporation into Greece and on the other to the continual and extensive population shifts that marked that period. As has been noted, no fewer than 17 major population movements took place in Macedonia between 1913 and 1925.2 Of these, the most sig- nificant were the Greek-Bulgarian and the Greek-Turkish exchanges of population under the terms, respectively, of the 1919 Treaty of Neuilly and the 1923 Lausanne Convention.

  • Kozani, Western Macedonia, Greece
Kozani, Western Macedonia, Greece Kozani is a municipality in the Region of Western Macedonia. The city is the commercial and scientific center of Western Macedonia with a vibrant life and a variety of cultural and social events. The city's location makes it a transport hub that connects Macedonia with Epirus through Egnatia Highway, while Albania and North Macedonia to the North and the Region of Thessaly to the South are also very well connected. Kozani offers an interesting combination of rich local folklore tradition – preserved by the local population – with modern infrastructure. The city of Kozani, which is the capital of the Region of Western Macedonia, is situated in the northern part of Aliakmonas River valley. The city lies 710 meters above sea level and has a continental climate, with hot summers and quite cold and long winter periods. The Regional Unit of Kozani is among the most prosperous areas of the Greek province, due to its lignite deposits and the related mining and power production activities; at its peak, the area produced approximately 70% of the total national electric power, being thus known as the “Heart of Energy” for the country! However, the operation of the mines and plants has caused severe environmental impact due to the ground, water and air pollution, resulting from the mining and thermal power activities in the area. Kozani is also well known for the production of its high quality Saffron, which is one of the most popular and valuable spices of the ancient cultures for its smell, color, medical and aphrodisiac properties.
