Eagle Spirit runs deep for the Chairs of this year’s Generation “C” campaign. Rusty Crossman (‘66), and his two daughters Elizabeth Crossman Cook (‘95) and Allyson Crossman Slobotski (‘98), continue to be important members of the Central community. Even with their busy lives, they all boast impressive lists of community service and remain passionate about giving back to their alma mater: Central High School.

Rusty (‘66) is an Omaha ophthalmologist whose incredible vision for Central High School led to the creation of the Central High School Foundation in 1996. Rusty received his undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College before completing his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His energy and enthusiasm for his alma mater are boundless, and the positive results will impact Central and the Omaha community forever. The most important thing in Rusty’s life is his family. Rusty is married to Stephanie Meyers and has 3 daughters, 1 son, and 5 grandchildren.

Elizabeth (‘95) graduated from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration with a major in finance and minors in accounting and French. She has been employed with First National Bank for the past twenty-two years, currently serving as the Sr. Director of Talent Acquisition and HR Business Partnering. Liz currently serves on the CHS Hall of Fame Selection Committee as well as the Executive and Human Resources Committees for Heartland Workforce Solutions. Some of her interests include following Husker football and volleyball, playing golf, enjoying country music, and spending time with her husband, Shawn, and her three boys: Evan (9), Nathan (7) and Ryan (5). THE CROSSMAN FAMILY Allyson (‘98) also graduated from Texas Christian University majoring in 2018-19 GENERATION “C” CHAIRS accounting and finance. To learn more about Generation “C,” the official support group of 8 Central High School, visit www.chsfomaha.org/support/generation Experiential Learning The Color Purple In April, students from CHS English classes had the opportunity to attend a performance of The Color Purple: The Musical at the Lied Center for the Performing Arts in Lincoln. More than 40 Eagles, mostly juniors and seniors, were able to take in the Tony award-winning musical based on the 1982 novel by Alice Walker. Prior to the performance, students took part in an educational performance guide. One of the speakers who led the pre-show discussion was CHS alum Mecca Slaughter (‘13), a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After the performance, students wrote short responses to discuss their thoughts about the show.

The Color Purple: The Musical follows Celie, a fourteen year old African-American woman living in Georgia during the early 20th century, as she journeys from childhood through joy and despair, anguish and hope to discover the power of love and life.

Students who attended the performance raved about how amazing it was to see the characters and story that they had read (from Alice Walker’s novel) come to life.

Providing the students of Central with an unrivaled college preparatory education is the Central High School Foundation’s top priority. The Central High School Foundation believes that opportunities should exist for all of our young people, regardless of their background or socio-economic status. This opportunity was made possible by the generous donation of Harry A. Koch, Jr. CHS 1947 in memory of Ms. Alice West, CHS English Teacher 1929-1956.

Student IMPACT The Mission of the Central High School Foundation is “To improve the education of present and future students at Central High School.” One way the mission is fulfilled is through classroom grants. Read below about how CHS teachers used classroom grants received through the Central High School Foundation.

Library Tutoring With a grant through the Central High School Foundation, tutoring is offered after school during the academic year in the Central High School library. The purpose of homework tutoring is to provide students with an option to receive clarifying help outside the classroom from a teacher certified in the subject area. Teachers are available to help students in the subjects of English, Social Studies, World Languages, Science, and Math. Homework help is available to all students on a walk-in basis. 1,215 students received tutoring during the 2017-18 school year. Since the inception of this grant during the 2014-15 school year, there has been a 126% increase in the number of students who have received tutoring through this program. Science department

Teachers in the CHS Science Department have seen student interest in Advanced Placement Chemistry increase ten-fold thanks to a classroom grant from the Central High School Foundation. Students have had experiential learning opportunities at places such as Creighton University’s Cadaver Lab, the Glacier Creek Preserve, and the Science Olympiad. With the availability of this grant, Central High School science students are now entering three times as many projects into science fairs and competitions compared to prior years. The grant covers costs of materials needed for the science fairs and competitions that are not allocated in the district budget. Eagle Broadcasting on STrivTV

Central High School students have the opportunity to gain vocational experience by learning how to produce, direct, and participate in live-streaming of Eagle events on the StrivTV platform. With three high-definition video cameras, a state of the art sound board, a switcher, and professional broadcasting software, our Eagles have state of the art equipment to share what’s going on at CHS with our Generation “C” members around the globe. This student-led broadcast team includes camera operators, play-by-play announcers, color commentators, and student directors. Some of the events that the Eagle Broadcasting Channel covers include football games, basketball games, volleyball games, the Central High School Hall of Fame induction ceremony, the Road Show, and Senior Recognition Ceremony.
