oxford world’s classics THE FIRST EMPEROR Sima Qian’s Historical Records (Shiji), from which this selection is taken, is the most famous Chinese historical work, which not only established a pattern for later Chinese historical writing, but was also much admired for its literary qualities, not only in China, but also in Japan, where it became available as early as the eighth cen- tury ad. The work is vast and complex, and to appreciate its nature it is necessary to make a selection of passages concerning a particu- lar period. To this end the short-lived Qin Dynasty, which unified China in the late third century bc, has been chosen for this transla- tion as a key historical period which well illustrates Sima’s method. Sima himself lived from 145 bc to about 86 bc. He inherited the post of Grand Historiographer from his father, and was so deter- mined to complete his work that he suffered the penalty of castra- tion rather than the more honourable alternative of death when he fell foul of the Emperor. Department of • The University of British Columbia 2075 Wesbrook Place Vancouver, Canada V6T 1W5 Date K ii Abstract This thesis is concerned primarily with the investigation of the thematic content and the stylistic elements that underlie the san-qu verse of the most anc distinguished Yuan san-qu poet, Ma Zhi-yuan v^7 ^C^L_ ' ^ secondly with a study of his life. There are three main divisions in this thesis. The first chapter provides a biographical account of his life, relying chiefly upon Zhong Si-cheng's i>i^ records in the Lu-gui bu J^TJC J^, , and the apparently "autobiographical" contents of some of Ma's san-qu. It allso gives a brief introduction to the rise of Yuan san-qu, and the particular political and social milieu of this dark period of alien rule which, to a considerable extent, influenced the personal "escapist" philosophy of Ma, as well as the Yuan intellectual climate as a whole.

Building Blocks of Chinese Historiography: A Narratological Analysis of Shi Ji Abstract In Shi ji studies, scholars from both the East and West have predominantly taken one particular approach: the psychological reading of its author, Sima Qian. Since the author suffered penal castration when he was writing the Shi ji, this approach has been summarized as “the theory of conveying one’s frustration.” Many scholars, modern and pre-modern alike, have inferred the author’s feelings and emotions from his biographical experiences and have interpreted the text accordingly. This narrow interpretation constrains our understanding by exclusively focusing on the author’s personal pains and purposes. Such analysis thus commits the intentional fallacy, which mistakenly equates the author with the text, unjustifiably simplifying the complicated interpretive process. I explore the features of the text itself, shifting the focus of research from the author’s intention to the effects produced by its narrative devices, which have determinative influence over the interpretive process but have long been overlooked.

he udesigabl zhag qig ranslated by yiyu wag 2,211 years ago, the powerful warlord Xiang Yu invited his rival, Liu Bang, to a banquet in Hongmen. The banquet, conceived as a trap to kill Liu Bang, started in a tense atmosphere. The hosts and guests took their seats. Xiang Yu faced east, and his consultant, Fan Zheng, south. Liu Bang’s consultant Zhang Liang chose to face Xiang Yu so that Liu Bang faced Fan Zheng instead of Xiang Yu, hinting that Liu Bang had no intention to act against Xiang Yu. At that moment, Xiang Yu was leading 400,000 soldiers, and Liu Bang only 100,000. The two armies were only about forty miles apart. In order to avoid direct conflict with Xiang Yu and survive the banquet, Liu Bang needed to sheji (devise some strategies). During the meeting, Fan Zeng raised a piece of circular jade three times to signal Xiang Yu to take action, but Xiang Yu did not respond. Fan Zeng then summoned Xiang Zhuang to perform a sword dance with the intent to kill Liu Bang. At this pivotal point, the banquet was interrupted by Fan Kuai, whose arrival was arranged by Zhang Liang to distract Xiang Yu. When Fan Kuai impressed all the attendees with his bold manner of consuming the wine and pork, Liu Bang fled under the pretext of going to the toilet. At the banquet, Zhang Liang, on behalf of Liu Bang who was reportedly “drunk and left early” presented a jade disc to Xiang Yu, and a jade square ruler to Fan Zeng, who furiously broke the jade disc and predicted, “This mean fellow (Xiang Yu) is not worthy of my service.

  • The Rise And
iliij"!}JHt:t1t . i~*il&~ 2005 Vol. 2 pp. 87 - 122 The Rise and Jian Zhao The shi (±) class was split into military and civilian camps in the early Chunqiu (~~ f)( 770-476 B.C.). Society was then undergoing dramatic changes. The original highly hereditary system of public service (0~) was disintegrating. Many warriors could not find a career. They began to work for private houses (;v1.1 111), many of which had replaced the old aristocratic houses to become the dominant forces in the former vassal states. From these warriors came the earliest group of xia (1~), who provided services for their nusters, such as fighting in battle or conducting an assassination. The xia warriors were extremely active through the whole period of the Warring States (irtIGl~ 475-221 B.C.), but under the brutal regime of Qin (* 221-207 B.C.) they were forced underground and disappeared from the front stage of the political arena. The anti-Qin rebellion and founding of the Western Han (Tt§?~l 202 B.C.-8) revitalized the xia and also changed the nature of the classical xia. In this article, the development of the xia in the Western Han dynasty is extensively introduced and carefully analyzed, with a focus on the xia's general position in society and its relationship with both the central and local authorities. The most famous Han xia figure, Guo Xie (!JIS1~¥), is singled out for examination, as he will fully demonstrate the characteristics of the xia at the time. The xia and the founding of the Han empire The founding of the Qin Dynasty in 221 B.C.

Whereas virtually every ancient Greek, old English, or early German text – to name but a few – has been the subject of text critical scrutiny, in many cases even since Renaissance times, the same does not hold true for Chinese works. In the absence of early manuscripts they could themselves base upon, modern editions of classical Chinese texts usually take as their starting point the earliest extant printed versions which quite often date from Song times and are thus separated by many centuries from the no longer available originals. However, quite often testimonies of ancient texts exist as quotations in works that considerably predate the first printed versions of the texts in question. In view of this fact, virtually every classical Chinese text needs to be systematically re- examined and critically edited by taking into account every available explicit as well as implicit quotation.

  • The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This Is Episode 27. Last
Welcome to the Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast. This is episode 27. Last time, the emperor had issued a secret decree to his brother-in-law, Dong (3) Cheng (2), asking him to find a way to get rid of Cao Cao since Cao Cao was turning into yet another imperial puppet master like the guys before him. Dong Cheng was stumped, though, and he fell asleep while thinking about this matter. And he left the decree on the table. When his friend Wang (2) Zifu (3,2) came to visit, he saw the decree. “You are planning to kill the prime minister!” Wang (2) Zifu (3,2) said to a panicked Dong Cheng. “I’m going to turn you in!” “If you do that, the Han is done for!” Dong Cheng said with tears in his eyes. “I was just kidding,” Wang Zifu said. “My family has received the Han’s benevolence for generations, how can I not be loyal to the court? I am willing to lend you a hand and kill the rebel.” “If that’s the case, it would be a boon to the country!” Dong Cheng said. “Then let’s write a secret pledge declaring our loyalty to his majesty, no matter the danger to ourselves or our clans,” Wang Zifu said. Delighted, Dong Cheng fetched a length of white silk and wrote his name first. Wang Zifu then added his name. After this, Wang Zifu said, “General Wu (2) Zilan (3,2) is a close friend of mine. We can bring him in on this.” “Of all the officials at court, only Zhong (3) Ji (2) and Wu (2) Shuo (4) are my confidants,” Dong Cheng said.
