Landmarks Preservation Commission September 23, 1980, Designation List 137 LP-1127 PERSHING SQUARE VIADUCT (Park Avenue Viaduct), Park Avenue from 40th Street to Grand Central Terminal (42nd Street), Borough of Manhattan. Built 1917-19; architects Warren & Wetmore. Landmark Site: The property bounded by a line running easward parallel with the northern curb line of East 40th Street, a line running northward to the edge of Tax Map Block 1280, Lot 1, parallel with the eastern wall of the viaduct, a line running westward along the edge of Tax Map Block 1280, Lot 1, and a line running southward parallel with the western wall of the viaduct to the point of beginning. On March 11, 1980, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Pershing Square Viaduct (Park Avenue Viaduct) and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 9). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Four witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS Located at Park Avenue and 42nd Street, tfie Pershing Square Viaduct was constructed tn 1917-1919. The viaduct extends from 40th Street to Grand Central Terminal at 42nd Street, linking upper and lower Park Avenue by way of elevated drives that make a circuit around the terminal building and descend to ground level at 45th Street. Designed in 1912 by the architectural firm of Warren & Wetmore, the viaduct was conceived as part of the original 1903 plan for the station by the firm of Reed & Stem. -

Above: The Pittsfield Building, located at 55 E. Washington Street, is a 38-story steel-frame skyscraper with a rectangular 21-story base that covers the entire building lot-approximately 162 feet on Washington Street and 120 feet on Wabash Avenue. The Commission on Chicago Landmarks, whose nine members are appointed by the Mayor, was established in 1968 by city ordinance. It is responsible for recommending to the City Council that individual buildings, sites, objects, or entire districts be designated as Chicago Landmarks, which protects them by law. Landmarks Preservation Commission August 6, 2013, Designation List 466 LP-2537 HOLLAND PLAZA BUILDING (now ONE HUDSON SQUARE), 75 Varick Street (aka 73- 93 Varick Street, 73-99 Watts Street, and 431-475 Canal Street), Manhattan Built 1930; architect, Ely Jacques Kahn Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 226, Lot 1 On June 11, 2013 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Holland Plaza Building (now One Hudson Square) and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 3). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. There were two speakers in favor of designation including the owner and a representative of the Historic District Council. Summary The Holland Plaza Building is a large, modern-classical style manufacturing structure, constructed on an irregularly-shaped lot facing the entrance to the Holland Tunnel in 1929-30. The building location was chosen to take advantage of the new transportation hub then developing at the entrance to the newly-constructed tunnel linking New York and New Jersey. One of the most significant buildings by celebrated architect Ely Jacques Kahn, the Holland Plaza displays a modern, functional architectural vocabulary influenced by the contemporary expressionist brick buildings of Germany and Holland. Kahn popularized this style in his numerous remarkable, commercial buildings built throughout New York City. Positioned on a prominent site, the Holland Plaza Building displays a dramatic style that emphasizes the structural grid without applied ornament. Its strong vertical piers are balanced by horizontal, textured spandrels and their meeting point is emphasized by projecting corner blocks and a layered plaque, creating a dynamic surface tension that is quite unusual in this district of utilitarian warehouse structures. -

Michigan Ave. (1928; Holabird & Roche/Holabird & Root) The 333 NORTH MICHIGAN BUILDING is one of the city's most outstanding Art Deco-style skyscrapers. It is one of four buildings surrounding the Michigan A venue Bridge that defines one of the city' s-and nation' s-finest urban spaces. The building's base is sheathed in polished granite, in shades of black and purple. Its upper stories, which are set back in dramatic fashion to correspond to the city's 1923 zoning ordinance, are clad in buff-colored limestone and dark terra cotta. The building's prominence is heightened by its unique site. Due to the jog of Michigan Avenue at the bridge, the building is visible the length of North Michigan Avenue, appearing to be located in the center of the street. Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe with Philip Johnson; Kahn & Jacobs, associate architects. Built 1956-58. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1307, Lot 1. On May 17, 1988, the landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Seagram Building, first floor interior, consisting of the lobby and passenger elevator cabs and the fixtures and interior components of these spaces including but not limited to, interior piers, wall surfaces, ceiling surfaces, floor surfaces, doors, railings, elevator doors, elevator indicators, and signs; and the proposed designation of the related I.and.mark Site (Item No. 2). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of law. Twenty witnesses, including a representative of the building's owner, spoke in favor of designation. No witnesses spoke in opposition to designation. The Commission has received many letters in favor of designation. DFSCRIPI'ION AND ANALYSIS Summary The Seagram Building, erected in 1956-58, is the only building in New York City designed by architectural master Iudwig Mies van der Rohe. Constructed on Park Avenue at a time when it was changing from an exclusive residential thoroughfare to a prestigious business address, the Seagram Building embodies the quest of a successful corporation to establish further its public image through architectural patronage. -

DaViD GOODmaN is Studio Associate Professor of Architecture at Illinois Institute of Technology and is co-principal of R+D Studio. Course Syllabus Jump to Today Modern American Architecture Columbia University, GSAPP Spring 2020, Mondays 11-1 Professor Jorge Otero- Pailos Ph.D. TA: Shuyi [email protected] M.S TA: Mariana Ávila [email protected] Course Description: This course is a survey of American Modern Architecture since the country’s first centennial. As America ascended to its current position of hegemony during the late 19th and 20th centuries, its architects helped refashion the built environment to serve the needs of a growing and ever-diverse population. Hand in hand with the satisfaction of pragmatic requirements, American architects were called upon to fulfill deeper psychological wants, such as the country’s desire to have a national History. The American complex about the brevity, artificiality, and exterior dependency of its history, structured, with varying degrees of intensity, the evolution of the architectural discipline. Out of this deep-seated, and by no means exhausted, anxiety about producing, preserving, and identifying American history, came a sophisticated architectural culture; one capable of foiling, exploiting, subverting, and manipulating the various contradictions of modernity. From the standpoint of this relationship between history and modernity, we will analyze the American architectural struggle to be progressive and accepted, exceptional and customary, and to simultaneously capture the future and the past. Each lecture will analyze the production and reception of built (and written) works by renowned figures and anonymous builders. The question of History will help us discern the terms of engagement between architecture and other disciplines over time, such as: preservation, planning, real estate development, politics, health, ecology, sociology, and philosophy. -

(overlapping dialogue; inaudible). MR. GOLDSTONE There are many familiar faces here I see from the Municipal Art Society’s walking tours. But they’re in an unfamiliar setting, both the time of day, in the evening instead of the usual Sunday afternoon, and the fact that this is a sitting-down walking tour is also unusual. But the Municipal Art Society has always tried to break new ground in any aspect of New York, whether it’s old or middle-aged or a new aspect of New York that has contributed something of [00:01:00] interest to the visual scene in New York. Tonight, we’re going to have a very physically relaxed walking tour. I hope your imaginations will be stretched if your legs are not. We’ve been very fortunate in having Arthur Drexler, director of the department of architecture of the Museum of Modern Art, to give a serious talk on the architecture of the Guggenheim Museum, how it evolved in the mind of one of the greatest American [architects?], Frank Lloyd Wright.
