From the airport Berlin-Schönefeld (SXF) Take the A113 from Schönefeld Airport, in direction to Dreieck Neukölln and turn left onto the A100 city motorway. Take the Tempelhofer Damm exit and turn right towards the center. After 4,5 km turn right onto Leipziger Straße. After 3,5 km you reach our hotel. Driving time about 25 minutes. THE RED TOWN HALL Seat of Government and Landmark in the Heart of Berlin Senatskanzlei Senatskanzlei Berlin © Michael Müller, Governing Mayor of Berlin Dear Visitors, Welcome to Berlin’s Town Hall, known as the ‘Red Town Hall’ (Rotes Rathaus) due to its red brick façade. This building, the seat of the Governing Mayor, is at the heart of policymaking in Berlin. The state gov- ernment convenes here every Tuesday in the Senate meeting room. At the same time, the Red Town Hall is a venue for encounters: conferences, readings, and exhibitions bring people with very different origins and interests together. Deserving citizens are honoured at the Town Hall, and it is where heads of state from all over the world sign the city’s Golden Book. However, the Town Hall is also a symbol of Berlin’s eventful history. It was built more than 150 years ago on the same site that had been occupied by the city’s town hall since the Middle Ages. As the seat of the mayor, the municipal assembly, and the city council, it played a key role in the history of democracy in Berlin. This came to an abrupt end in 1933 when the Nazis took power, systematically dismantling democracy and local self-government. The Town Hall sustained severe damage during the Second World War. It was rebuilt in the 1950s, becoming the seat of the mayor of East Berlin, while West Berlin’s Senate convened at Schöneberg Town Hall. It has been the shared seat of government for reunified Berlin since 1991. Today, the Red Town Hall remains loyal to its demo- cratic tradition, and is representative of Berlin’s cos- mopolitan outlook. -

In Zukunft beherbergt das 5-8 geschossige Gebäude neben ca. 5.109 m Wohnfläche auch weitere gewerbliche Nutzungen. Wichtiges Gestaltungsmerkmal ist der Höhenversprung in der Fassade. Das Gebäude gliedert sich in fünf unterschiedlich hohe Abschnitte, die zwischen fünf und acht Geschosse umfassen. In seiner Fassade nimmt das Gebäude den Bezug zum benachbarten, historischen Fleethaus auf. -

This is being done on behalf of The Association for Diplomatic Studies. I am Charles Stuart Kennedy. J.D. and I are old friends. We are going to include your biographic sketch that you included at the beginning, which is really quite full and it will be very useful. I have a couple of questions to begin. While you were in high school, what was your interest in foreign affairs per se? I know you were talking politics with Mr. Frank Humphrey, Senator Hubert Humphrey's brother, at the Humphrey Drugstore in Huron, South Dakota, and all that, but how about foreign affairs? BINDENAGEL: I grew up in Huron, South Dakota and foreign affairs in South Dakota really focused on our home town politician Senator and Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey. Frank, Hubert Humphrey's brother, was our connection to Washington, DC, and the center of American politics. We followed Hubert's every move as Senator and Vice President; he of course was very active in foreign policy, and the issues that concerned South Dakota's farmers were important to us. Most of farmers' interests were in their wheat sales, and when we discussed what was happening with wheat you always had to talk about the Russians, who were buying South Dakota wheat. -

Take the S-Bahn (S5 towards Strausberg Nord, S7 towards Ahrensfelde, S9 towards Flughafen Berlin-Schönefeld, or S3 towards Erkner) on platform 5 and get off the train at Berlin Alexanderplatz station (2nd stop). 2. In Alexanderplatz station, go downstairs and follow the hallway in the direction of the U- Bahn until you reach the circular stairs at the end of the station hall. 3. Keep to the left and walk around the circular stairs. The first fotofix photo booth (A) is on the left behind the circular stairs. 4. Another photo booth (B) can be found when you walk down the circular stairs and immediately turn right. The second photo booth is placed at the wall right next to the circular stairs. 5. Two other photo booths can be found if you proceed in the direction of the U-Bahn. Coming down the circular stairs, walk towards the yellow BVG store, then turn right and continue until you see the photo booth (C) at opposite wall. The fourth photo booth is located further down the hall towards the U-Bahn. Coming down the circular stairs, walk towards the yellow BVG store, then turn left. Go down the stairs and walk straight through until you see the exit towards Karl-Liebknecht-Straße, Memhardstraße, Galeria Kaufhof on the left. The fourth photo booth (D) is right under the sign. DIE NEUE U5. FÜR MEHR MITTENDRIN. DIE NEUE U5 Der Lückenschluss verlängert die U5 vom Alexanderplatz zum Brandenburger Tor und führt sie dort mit der bereits fertigen U55 zusammen. Aus U5 und U55 wird eine Linie: die neue U5. Entlang der Neubaustrecke entstehen drei neue U-Bahnhöfe: Berliner Rathaus (Rotes Rathaus), Museumsinsel und Unter den Linden, der künftige Kreuzungsbahnhof der Linien U5 und U6. Durch den Lückenschluss erhalten die großen Wohngebiete im Osten Berlins nach der Fertig- stellung eine umsteigefreie Verbindung zur historischen Innenstadt, zum Regierungsviertel und zum Hauptbahnhof, welche mit der neu- en U5 ebenfalls eine durchgehende Anbindung an das komplette U-Bahnnetz erhalten. The three books men- tioned above are subtitled »The architectural work today«; in other words, they are exclusively about buildings that still exist. This is also true of the present selection. The question whether this se- lection and limitation to Berlin and Potsdam is representative of the work of the three architects can clearly be answered in the affirmative. For Persius this question does not even arise, because during his short life he worked almost exclusively in Potsdam and its immediate vicinity – he was the »King’s architect«. Stüler’s Distributors work is found in a region extending from Cologne on the Rhine to Masuria, with some important buildings in Stockholm and Brockhaus Commission Budapest as well. About a quarter of his works can be found in Kreidlerstraße 9 Potsdam and Berlin, where Stüler, too, was the »King’s architect«.
