3 GREETINGS

Dear industry guests, We are so happy, that you have visited us on a special for us occa- sion – the 20th anniversary of the Vilnius International film festival. Although Industry event Meeting point – Vilnius counts three times less experience than the festival itself, but this three days event for fellow film professionals offers more and more each year and ambi- tiously seeks to be the event hard to miss on this part of the Europe. This year, we are hoping, you will take home a little bit of everything.

Firstly, some insight. The Coming soon session will help you to look into the near future and to see what the films from our region will be this year. Works from Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia should give a further look beyond the borders of Europe and to get acquainted with the film- makers that are not frequent guests here. Thoughts. Some fresh thoughts should come while listening to the professionals speaking about marketing campaign for one of the most scandalous arthouse film of last year. Or maybe the research on audience building will provide you with the thoughts about how to work with the audience of your film! Inspiration. Listen to the acclaimed filmmakers with Oscar nominations and Oscar statuettes in their hands speak about what was their way up the filmmaking ladder. Be inspired with their outstanding but simple personalities’ and their attitude towards quality filmmaking. Friends. Do not forget to mingle and to meet friends or make new ones, as there will never be a good project and a good result without good people around. Welcome to Meeting point – Vilnius and enjoy!

Synopsis In the early morning hours of June 14, 1941, following Stalin’s orders, over 40 000 people from the flourishing Baltic States were arrested, shoved into cattle cars and dispatched on their way to camps of permanent exile in Siberia. Among them were journalist Melanie and her eight year old son Andrei, who were forcibly separated from her husband and his father Alexander.

Not everyone survived the two weeks of arduous train journey. Those who reached the desti- nation were close to death from starvation. The inhumane conditions continued in the Siberian village where women, still completely ignorant of the fate of their husbands, were settled in a badly built barracks and forced to work like slaves.

Melanie keeps herself alive for the sake of her son and because she hopes to see her husband to whom she writes hundreds of love letters that are never sent, since his address remains un- known. That helps her to keep her pride and personal integrity in the face of death from starva- tion, hard work or disease, to which many others succumb. Melanie’s inner strength becomes the source of emotional support to others who cannot cope with the hard life of exile. After 16 years, Melanie is released and returns to , only to find out that her husband Alexander died in the camps in 1945.

Synopsis Latvian steamer RASMA is a reason to provoke the harmonious life of Northern Estonians living on the harshly beautiful coast by questioning whether at least some basis of their wellbeing might have come from the Latvian ship.

If not other nations, then at least Latvians often ponder why their neighbor Estonians live as well as they do. So why is that? Could the answer have some connection with Latvian cargo ship RASMA, that sank near Mohni Island 74 years ago? M/s RASMA was on the way to Leningrad (Russia) when on July 5, 1941 she hit the mine.

Today the people living in seaside villages of Lahemaa know well the beautiful name of Rasma and the legend about a steamer that gave people flour to survive for three hard wartime years. It is also generally known that the ship is still aground there, ragged by ice and treasure hunters. But more important than the legends are the people living on the coast, their positive attitude and ability to find common ground with stranger.

The film was developed at the European Documentary Network LisbonDocs 2014 workshop.

Synopsis Although people are born in very different places and cultures, surfing is one of the activities that can bring people together. The title, “23 EAST. 23 WEST.” refers to the coordinates of Ice- land 64N 23W, Lithuania 54N 23E and Cape Verde 14N 23W. The story focuses on the social aspects of Cape Verdean, Icelandic and Lithuanian surfers who explore each other’s culture, lifestyle and, obviously, waves.

Surfing was born on the exotic Polynesian islands but as a subculture was capitalized and glo- balized by Westerns. Now it’s a perfect measure for social dilemmas in and out of the Western world. Which would you choose: one of the wealthiest countries in the world with a developed economy, cold weather and poor surfing conditions or a small African island with poor living conditions but rather excellent weather and waves? What if you are in even worst situation – stuck in the grey middle area with no money and no surfing?

If you had to pick two extreme differences for surfing – Iceland and Cape Verde are excellent counterparts. These two islands differ not only in terms of surfing conditions but as well in cli- mate, culture, history and standard of living. You might even call it as black and white sides of surfing with grey Lithuania being a perfect match for the middle of these two extremes, and a vivid country of choices.
