POSITION SUMMARY

Performs a variety of skilled and unskilled maintenance work and operates a variety of equipment in the maintenance and repair work associated with various public works projects.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operates various heavy, medium and light equipment, machinery and used in projects and activities which may include front-end loader, grader, asphalt roller, dump truck, backhoe, asphalt truck, sidewalk grinder, asphalt reclaimer, compactor, concrete mixer, tractor with bushhog, rhino mower, mowing equipment, weed eater, turbo chipper, mulcher, blower, hedge clipper, striping machine, paint machine, chain saw, table saw, miter saw, drill, drill press, asphalt cutting saw, jackhammer, sledgehammer, post driver, post hold digger, hand tamper, pick ax, , rake, , broom, ladder, concrete finishing tools, carpentry tools, mechanic tools, power tools or hand tools. • Performs maintenance work involving various public works projects involving street and roadside construction and maintenance to include grading road surfaces, repairing asphalt and shell rock surfaces, compacting road surfaces, repairing water breaks, repairing stormwater structures, cutting sidewalks/pavement, busting/removing asphalt/concrete, locating pips and utility wires, laying pipes, mixing concrete, building concrete forms, pouring/spreading concrete, driving sign posts, picking up debris/litter, removing dead animals from roadways, digging holes/trenches, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy materials, setting up or removing road barricades at work sites, or flagging traffic. • Performs tasks associated with building repair and maintenance projects including painting interior/exterior walls, building cabinetry, installing doors, pulling/connecting wires, hanging storm shutters, moving furniture/equipment, setting up tables/equipment for meetings/functions, cleaning/sweeping building areas, and mopping floors. • Performs work involving tree/shrub pruning, weed-eating, landscape planting, mo wing, watering/irrigating and applying fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides. • Transport, loads, hauls, and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects or at work sites. • Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, refueling vehicles, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment and cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety and reports faulty equipment. • Monitors work environments to ensure safety of employees and other individuals and reports unsafe conditions. • Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions and all safety rules and wears/uses all appropriate safety equipment. • Ensures availability of adequate equipment, tools, parts, supplies or other materials needed to conduct projects; assists in determining amount of materials to complete projects; initiates requests for new/replacement materials; purchases or picks up supplies/materials as needed. • Prepares or complete various forms, reports, correspondence, checklists, work orders or other documents. • Communicates with supervisor, employees, community services workers, other departments, contractors, community organizations, the public, and other individuals to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information or resolve problems. • Assists other departments as necessary by directive from Department Head.

QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE Education and Experience • High School diploma or equivalency • One (1) year’s public works experience • Vocational/technical training in operation and maintenance

Necessary Knowledge Skills and Abilities • Sound knowledge of equipment, vehicles, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance and repair activities. • Advanced skill in operation of all required tools, vehicles and equipment. • Ability to safely perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time. • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, to understand and carry out written and oral instructions, and print legibly. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public. • Ability to perform arithmetic computations to maintain accurate records.

Licensing and Certification • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record • National Incident Management System (NIMS) Certification in accordance with Village policy

WORK ENVIRONMENT • Work assigned shifts, nights, weekends and holidays as necessary, with required notice of shift change. • Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is exposed to vibration and above nor ma l noise levels. • May occasionally work in high, precarious places and occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. • Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. • Frequently required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and s me ll; and talk and hear. • Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. • Vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
