With your support, we CAN achieve our goal of creating happier and heathier kids through community hockey programs that eliminate barriers to participation and give ALL kids the chance to play. Our impact isn’t limited to increasing access to the game, we are determined to build and make a positive impact on Alberta communities through the development of leaders at the local level with our Future Leaders Development Program; a program in which the leaders of tomorrow are trained today. Through the strength of existing relationships, the influence and vision of our Board of Directors, and the generous support of new partners we have had a very successful year. In saying that, the environment is telling us that there is an increased demand for support to get kids in Alberta’s communities on the ice experiencing hockey for the first time regardless of the barriers. This remains our driving focus. Through events, sponsors, individuals and corporate donors, we generated over $400,000 in VISION revenue. With these funds, we aim to achieve our mission of supporting the hockey community Improving the quality of life for by celebrating those before us, investing in those who lead us, and contributing to those who Albertans through hockey. need us. Brady Bakke (Distinguished) The scholarship program focuses on educating and training post-secondary Carlin Boey students in the areas of coaching, skill instruction and leadership. Each scholarship is $1,000, with two Distinguished Recipients receiving an additional $3,000 each Colin Minardi for going above and beyond the expectations of the program. The Hockey Alberta Foundation provides $15,000 in funding to support a Julia Murrell weekend-long program that includes in-class sessions on leadership, team building, and Long Term Player Development. Participants work through the Jordan Stimpson NCCP Coach 2 program, achieving Trained status, as well as NCCP Instructional Garrett Turner Stream-trained status. Tricia Van Vaerenberg (Distinguished) Sarah Weninger 2017 RINKS TO LINKS – THE EXPERIENCE OF A LIFETIME “This has been the best day of my life.” n nine words, one of the 33 participants summed up the 2017 Rinks to Links Iprogram, hosted by the Hockey Alberta Foundation on July 25 in Canmore. The participants were youths from Calgary, most of whom had never golfed or skated before, and it was a day none will forget. The day included a bus trip to Canmore, and featured driving range and putting green lessons from the professionals at Stewart Creek Golf Club in the morning. After lunch, at the Canmore Recreation Centre, each participant was outfitted with a full set of hockey equipment, provided by Comrie’s Sports Equipment Bank in Calgary, before taking to the ice for a one-hour introduction to hockey, with instruction from Hockey Alberta staff, and volunteers, including members and staff of the Canmore Eagles. “First time I’ve ever felt like I was part of a team!” “I have never been on a road trip that was so cool!” “…best thing that has ever happened to me!” 4 HOCKEY ALBERTA FOUNDATION 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 5 NEW VISION & MISSIONEVERY FOR KID HOCKEY EVERY ALBERTA COMMUNITY Getting Alberta’s youth on the ice ince its launch in 2011, Every Kid Every Community (EKEC) has aimed to provide every child in SAlberta the opportunity to play hockey, have fun, and, in many cases, experience the sport for the very first time. EKEC funding is available to assist amateur sports organizations, minor hockey organizations, youth and recreation groups, or any community group with an idea, project or program that helps get local children active in hockey. In 2016-17, the Hockey Alberta Foundation awarded more than $65,000 in program and player assistance grants through EKEC. These funds reached more than a dozen communities, and had a positive impact on more than 900 children. ALLOCATION OF FUNDS EKEC DONORS CLUB – CR Minor Hockey Association BECOME A TEAMMATE! The Oyen & District Minor Hockey Association EKEC Donors Club allows YOU to become a Leduc Minor Hockey Association TEAMMATE for an annual contribution of $100 Red Deer Minor Hockey Association or more over a five-year period. Aga Khan Youth & Sport Board (Prairies) Ponoka Minor Hockey Association Southwest KC Hockey Association Westlock Minor Hockey Association Central Alberta Refugee Effort Hockey Edmonton 6 HOCKEY ALBERTA FOUNDATION 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 7 EVERY KID EVERY COMMUNITY FOUNDATION EVENTS ALBERTA HOCKEY HALL OF FAME AWARDS GALA The Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame (AHHF) recognizes pioneers, builders and achievers in Alberta. At minimum, a nominee must have lived in Alberta for at least five years, achieved personal and/or professional accomplishments in the game of hockey, made an impact in the game beyond a local or regional level, and received other significant recognition. The 2017 AHHF Awards Gala ran July 23 in Canmore, in conjunction with the Hockey Alberta Foundation Golf Classic. Through a silent and live auction, as well as a wine pull, the gala raised just over $9,100 for the Every Kid Every Community (EKEC) program. Five outstanding individuals, and perhaps one of the most celebrated families in all of hockey comprise the 2017 Induction Class for the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame (AHHF). Mel Davidson, Bill Hay, Tony Kollman, Perry Pearn, Glen Sather, and the entire Sutter family were enshrined in Alberta’s hockey history at the AHHF Awards Gala, bringing the number of inductees to 106 who have been honoured in the AHHF’s 35-year history. 2017 HOCKEY ALBERTA FOUNDATION GOLF CLASSIC The 2017 Hockey Alberta Foundation Golf Classic ran July 24-25 at the Stewart Creek Golf Club, raising more than $92,000, bringing the three-day total of money raised for EKEC to just over $100,000. The HAF Golf Classic was a sold-out event, with 19 hockey celebrities joining 125 golfers to support EKEC. Celebrity guests included recent AHHF inductees Ron Sutter and Mel Davidson, as well as Colton Parayko, Cale Makar, Jamie McLennan, Mike Commodore, and Rob Brown. 6 HOCKEY ALBERTA FOUNDATION 2017 ANNUAL REPORT 7 NEW VISION & MISSIONTEAMMATE FOR HOCKEY EVENTS ALBERTA GLENCROSS ROUGHSTOCK RODEO AND POKER EVENT For the sixth straight year, the Hockey Alberta Foundation was a beneficiary of the Glencross Invitational Charity Roughstock Event, through the Glencross Legacy Fund. The annual event began in 2012, and began as a family affair, with Curtis Glencross using his passion for rodeo, family, and hockey to serve his community and Albertan roots. To date, the event has raised more than $1 million in support of the Hockey Alberta Foundation, and the Central Alberta Ronald McDonald House in Red Deer.
