Test Your NCAA Knowledge COMPLIANCE Every year we meet with our student-athletes to review important compliance information. This year, an interactive question and answer, Jeopardy-themed, presentation is being utilized. Since we are in a game show mood, we thought you might enjoy testing your own compliance knowledge. No need to phrase your answer in the form of a question! 1) A representative of athletics interests attains and retains that identity only if they make monetary donations to an institution’s athletics programs. 2) While a representative of athletics interests is not allowed to contact prospective student-athletes or their relatives, they may speak to the student’s high school coach. 3) In an attempt to ease costs for parents of a current student-athlete who travel to see their son/daughter play, a local resident and representative of athletics interests may offer their residence for lodging. 4) If a Cornell team is coming to your area to compete, is it permissible to pay for a team to have a meal at your home. How about at a restaurant? 5) A coach may arrange to have a recent team alumnus attend dinner with a prospective student athlete on their official visit.

Answers: 1) False. A representative of athletics interests attains that identity by being involved in any way in promoting the institution’s athletics program. Once identified as a representative of athletics interests, one retains that identity indefinitely. 2) False. A representative of athletics interests may not speak with a prospect or a prospect’s relatives, coach, principal, or counselor. Normal contact with existing family, friends, relatives, or neighbors is allowed; however, any contact for the purpose of recruiting a prospect to Cornell is not permissible. 3) False. This would be considered an “extra benefit” to those current student-athletes. An extra benefit is any special arrangement given to a student-athlete or their friends and family that is not available to the general public or student body. 4) True & True. A student-athlete may receive an occasional meal from a representative of athletics interests on infrequent and special occasions. The meal must be provided in the individual’s home, although it can be catered. The representative can pay for a meal in a restaurant if it is in conjunction with an away competition. You would essentially be making an in-kind donation to the school in the amount of the meal. If any friends or relatives of student-athletes were present for the meal, they would have to cover the cost of their own meals to avoid receipt of an extra benefit. 5) False. A representative of athletics interests may not have any on- or off-campus contact with a prospective student-athlete or their guardians/relatives.
