Flyers Look To Take The Next Step In 2009 The Lewis University baseball team finished the 2008 season with the season. Ithal started six games at third base and Reynolds started 13 at most overall victories (18) and conference (11) wins in eight seasons. The first. task for the 2009 squad is to keep moving forward. “Jeffrey is one of the team leaders,” McDonough said. “After having 10 “Last season was a good first step to get us back to regional and seniors last year he has asserted himself in the senior role and guys look national recognition,” head coach Tim McDonough said. “We split two with up to him.” Southern Illinois Edwardsville, had a good four-game series at Southern Reynolds .319 last year with 12 RBI. He finished third in the GLVC in walks per game (.64). “My main objective is always going to be about the process and making “He will need to be a producer in the middle of the lineup for us,” sure we keep doing the right things,” McDonough said. “We need to make McDonough said. “Defensively he is as solid as anyone in the league. Junior Joe Carbone will backup McCall behind the plate. Last season “I think we have more pitching depth this year, but you can’t put a price the Flyers had the luxury of five experienced senior pitchers. The exodus on seniors we had last year and the way they battled,” McDonough said. creates an opportunity for several young arms in 2009. Look for a starting “I think we are more athletic as whole with more overall team speed.”

INFIELD Sophomore second baseman Mike Vucsko had an impressive rookie campaign last year. He batted .341 - second on the team, recorded 19 multi-hit games and stole 22 bases. Vucsko is a dynamic leadoff hitter who will likely be at the top of the lineup for the next three years. “Mike is a true table setter,” McDonough said. “He has garnered respect around the league and it is deserved. When he gets on base he creates problems for the opposition. Last year was not a fluke.” Vucsko will have a new -play partner in 2009 with the graduation of shortstop Mike Smith. A four-year starter, Smith hit .389 last year, tops on the team and fourth in the GLVC. Taking Smith’s spot will be heralded freshman Michael Wido. “Defensively Mike can be as good as anyone in the league,” McDonough said of Wido. “The key for him will be at the plate, and how he adjusts to the college game. He is already one of our hardest workers and is one of those guys that down the road will be all-conference.” Over at third, junior Miguel Amesquita will get a chance at the hot corner. A transfer from Triton College, Amesquita has two years of college baseball under his belt. “Miguel has perhaps the softest hands on the team,” McDonough said. “He is a streaky hitter and when he is seeing the ball well, he can really carry a team.” Expect to see sophomore Richard Forkin and freshman Cameron Anello to compete for playing time at third base as well “Richard did a good job last year transitioning to third after never play- ing the spot before.” McDonough said. “Cameron has a good bat and can be a good at this level.” Look for senior Tim Bingham at first base. He hit .311 last year and was third on the team with a .446 slugging percentage. “Tim has the ability to hit for power, and we’ll be in good shape if he can get consistent hits for us in the middle of the order,” McDonough said. “This is his fourth year here and he is comfortable with the travel, league and schedule. That is a big plus.” Seniors Jeffrey Ithal and Ryan Reynolds each saw time in the infield last Sophomore Mike Vucsko hit .341 as a freshman last season.

80s. There will be a learning curve and he will need to make adjustments as the season progresses.” Look for junior Ted Bartnik and freshmen Don Cizek and Drew Hicks to be options out of the bullpen. Cizek had a 2.96 era during his senior season in high school. “Don and Pat probably have the highest ceiling of our freshmen arms,” McDonough said. “Don is a prototypical left-hander who can throw to both sides of the plate. I project him as a conference starter for us during his career.” Hicks helped Pekin High School to two second place regional finishes and two conference championships. “We are going to ask a lot from Drew this season because he doesn’t get rattled,” McDonough said. “I know when he gets the ball in a big situa- tion he will be fine mentally.” Bartnik will be the Flyers’ closer in addition to seeing time at shortstop. “Ted is a classic submarine who throws at two or three different angles,” McDonough said. “He can swing the bat too which means he will be a valuable guy for us.”

OUTFIELD The Flyers’ outfield features experience up the middle and opportunities on the corner positions. Junior Ryan McManaman will hold down center field for a third consecutive season. He’s started 96 games in two seasons and helps give the Flyers solid defense up the middle. “Ryan is one of the better defensive in the league,” Mc- Donough said. “He takes great angles to the ball and has an above aver- age arm. He can be a .300 hitter and has really matured as a person and a player. We are expecting great things from him this year.” The graduation of four-year starter Billy Duffy opens up the left field spot in 2009. Look for junior Scott Householder to pick up the slack. Householder, a transfer for from Triton, hit .317 for the Trojans last sea- son. “Scott is perhaps our best all-around player, from baseball IQ to his Senior Chris McCall will be behind the plate for the second straight year. physical skills.” McDonough said. “He is a left-handed gap-to-gap hitter who can pitch for us in the bullpen if called upon too. He has already four of junior Matt Zicher, junior Joe Scumaci, senior Chris Brigham and emerged as a team leader.” freshman Pat Lahey. Sophomore Ryan Koerner will get the opportunity in right field. Tim McDonough is in his second season as head baseball coach. He is Head Coach the fourth head coach in the 55-year history of the program. In McDonough’s first season, the Flyers finished with their most overall and conference victories since 2002. The 2008 season saw Lewis’ first All- GLVC pitcher since 2000. Offensively, the Flyers’ team batting average was its highest since 2002 and improved by .66 from the previous season. Lewis Tim scored 115 more runs in McDonough’s first season than during the 2007 campaign. McDonough Prior to arriving at Lewis, McDonough spent five seasons as the top Second Season assistant at Northern Illinois University, where he served as the program’s recruiting coordinator and hitting instructor. He also was an assistant at North Central College, 1995 Kishwaukee Community College and North Central College. Lewis marks his first collegiate head coaching position. McDonough’s success as a recruiter resulted in consecutive nationally-ranked recruiting classes in 2005 and 2006. His 2006 class was lauded by the publication Collegiate Baseball as the No. 60 class nationally and featured five players from the state of Illinois, all ranked among the Land of Lincoln’s Top 50 “Cream of the Crop” by the Illinois High School Coaches Association. The group ranked second among Mid-American Conference classes and above Minnesota, San Jose State and Missouri State. The talented 2006 group surpassed the previous season’s No. 70 class ranking when Collegiate Baseball recognized NIU’s 2005 newcomers along- side national powers UCLA, Texas Tech, Central Florida and Baylor. It was the first time in over a decade the Huskies earned such prestigious accolades for its baseball recruiting. McDonough made an immediate impact on the Huskie hitters during his first season at NIU. The 2003 squad set numerous season batting records, including hits (625), home runs (70) and runs scored (408). As a team, NIU hit .315, with seven players hitting better than .300. In year two under McDonough, the Huskies tied a school record with 21 triples and posted the second-highest marks in school annals in many offensive categories. In 2005, Jeremy Busch became the first Huskie position player in 25 seasons to earn first-team All-MAC honors after hitting .340. In 2006, -Mc Donough helped Brian Toner improve his batting average over 130 points from the previous season on his way to a first-team All-MAC selec- tion, and first baseman Scott Simon became the NIU career hit leader. The duo of Simon and Toner hit .383 and .382, respectively, in the MAC. During his time at Kishwaukee, the 2002 team posted a 41-16 record and had six players selected in the 2002 MLB Amateur Draft, half of whom were infielders coached by McDonough. McDonough began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, North Central College (Naperville, Ill.). A nationally-ranked NCAA Division III baseball program, North Central won two College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) titles and earned two regional berths (1996 and 1998) during McDonough’s four years on staff, culminating with a final national ranking of No. 15 following the 1998 season. During his time as an assistant at NCC, McDonough also served as head coach for the Prairie Gravel Baseball Club of the Metro Collegiate Summer Baseball League. His squad won three-consecutive Metro College Summer Baseball League championships while sending 20 players to the draft. A standout infielder during his collegiate playing career, McDonough earned first-team All-CCIW honors in 1994 and helped the Cardinals capture a conference crown. In 1995, McDonough garnered a first-team nod while being named CCIW Player of the Year and winning the league’s Crown. His successful season was capped with recognition as a Division III All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association. McDonough graduated from NCC with a bachelor’s degree in speech/broadcast communi- cations in 1995. A 1991 graduate of Burbank’s St. Laurence High School, McDonough is originally from Bridgeview, Ill. McDonough and his wife Amy have 5 children: Anthony 11, Jacob, 10, Samantha 9, Christopher 8 and Teagan 1.

In 2008 Carlsen coached Jon Guzzo, Lewis’ first All-GLVC pitcher since 2000. Lewis marks Carlsen’s third collegiate coaching position in a career that has seen nine pitchers get drafted by Major League organizations. Prior to Lewis, Carlsen worked for three seasons as Winona State’s pitching coach. At Winona State, Carlsen guided a staff which lowered its team ERA each season. Four players were named to the all-confer- ence team and three to the all-region squad during his tenure. Carlsen also coached All-American and 2007 NCAA Division II Player of the Year, catcher/pitcher Ben Barrone. The Great Lakes Valley Conference The 13-member Great Lakes Valley Conference has made its name throughout the last 30 years as a power in NCAA Division II basketball. In the last few years, however, the GLVC has seen suc- cess in many sports, and the league can now claim itself as one of the nation’s top in all NCAA Division II athletics. The GLVC can claim schools in many of the Midwest’s major media markets, with schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (UW- Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Cincinnati (Northern Kentucky), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst) and St. Louis (UM-St. Louis). On Oct. 8, 2008 Maryville University and the University of Illinois at Springfield were admitted to the Conference bringing the league’s membership to 15 institutions. The two institutions will begin regu- lar season competition in the GLVC during the 2009-10 academic year. UIS will be eligible for postseason competition in 2010-2011, while Maryville will compete for postseason championships in 2011- 2012. Meet The Flyers

BOOSTERS, FRIENDS & FANS The following information is provided by the Lewis University Athletics Department for representatives of athletic interests (boosters):

INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) declares that each institution (Lewis University) is responsible for the control of its intercollegiate athletics program and compliance with the rules and regulations of the NCAA. This control includes the conduct and actions of all staff members and other individuals or agencies that promote the athletic interests of Lewis University. Representatives of Lewis University ‘s athletics interests are strictly prohibited from off-campus recruiting activities involving personal contact with potential student athletes. KEY COMPLIANCE DEFINITIONS Prospective Student-Athlete: A student who has started classes for the ninth grade, including students in prep schools and junior colleges, and individuals who have officially withdrawn from four-year schools. Any student not yet in the ninth grade becomes a prospect if an institution provides the student with any financial assistance or other benefits that are generally not provided to prospective students. Contact: A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parents, relatives or legal guardian(s) and a Lewis Univer- sity staff member or athletics representative during which any dialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. Recruiting: Any solicitation of a prospect or a prospect’s relatives (or legal guardian) by a Lewis University staff member or representative of the institution’s athletics interests for the purpose of securing the prospect’s enrollment and ultimate participation in the Lewis University intercollegiate athletics program. Extra Benefit: An extra benefit is any special arrangement by a Lewis University employee or a representative of athletics interest to provide a student- athlete or the student-athlete’s relative or friend with a benefit not expressly authorized by NCAA legislation. National Letter of Intent (NLI): An official document administered by the Collegiate Commissioners Association and utilized by subscribing member institutions, including Lewis University, to establish the commitment of a prospective student-athlete to attend a particular institution. NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse: A central clearinghouse that certifies athletics eligibility for Division I and II student-athletes. The Clearinghouse uses high school courses and test scores (ACT/SAT) to determine freshman athletics eligibility.

WHAT IS A BOOSTER? A “representative of the institution’s athletics interests” or booster is an individual who is known (or who should have been known) by a member of the institution’s executive or athletics administration to: Have participated in or to be a member of an agency or organiza- tion, including corporate entities (e.g., apparel and equipment companies), promoting the institution’s intercollegiate athletics program; Have made financial contributions to the athletics department or to an athletics booster organization of that institution; Be assisting or to have been requested (by the athletics department staff) to assist in the recruitment of prospects; Be assisting or to have assisted in providing benefits to enrolled student-athletes or their families; or Have been involved otherwise in promoting the institution’s athletics program. Once an individual is identified as a booster, that person retains the distinction indefinitely.

LEWIS ATHLETICS BOOSTERS--DID YOU KNOW? You may provide information about recruits to Lewis University coaches by sending newspaper clippings or calling a coach. You may employ a student-athlete at your place of business as long as the student-athlete receives prior approval from the Lewis Uni- versity Department of Athletics, and receives the same rate of pay as your other employees. You may invite a current student-athlete or team to your home for an occasional meal. You may donate financial assistance or gifts-in-kind to the Lewis University Varsity Club or team’s individual fundraising drive. You may not provide extra benefits, including discounted items or services, free meals, use of an automobile, to a current student-ath- lete or to a recruit. You may not speak with recruits, or their families, about attending Lewis University and his/her opportunities with Lewis University athletics. Have more questions?
