Our ability to survive as a civilization and as a species is intricately linked to the geologic processes that shape our earth, form its natural resources and allow it to recover from the abuse that our society heaps upon it. NCKRI: 2012-2013 Annual Report
The National Cave and Karst Research Institute (NCKRI) will be the world’s premier cave and karst research organization. NCKRI promotes and performs projects of national and international application, of the highest quality and integrity, through dedicated staff and partners. NCKRI is a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation. It was created by the US Congress in 1998 in partnership with the National Park Service, State of New Mexico, and the City of Carlsbad. Federal and state funding for NCKRI is adminis- tered by the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technolo- gy (aka New Mexico Tech or NMT). Funds not produced by agreements through NMT are accepted directly by NCKRI. NCKRI’s enabling legislation, the National Cave and Karst Research Institute Act of 1998, 16 U.S.C. §4310, iden- tifies NCKRI’s mission as to: 1) further the science of speleology; 2) centralize and standardize speleological information; 3) foster interdisciplinary cooperation in cave and karst research programs; 4) promote public education; 5) promote national and international cooperation in pro- tecting the environment for the benefit of cave and karst landforms; and 6) promote and develop environmentally sound and sus- tainable resource management practices. Grade 11 Informational Mini-Assessment Stalagmite Trio This grade 11 mini-assessment is based on two texts and an accompanying video about cave formations. The subject matter, as well as the stimuli, allow for the testing of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Literacy in Science and Technical Subjects and the Reading Standards for Informational Texts. The texts are worthy of students’ time to read, and the video adds a multimedia component to make the task a more complete and authentic representation of research. The texts meet the expectations for text complexity at grade 11. Assessments aligned to the CCSS will employ quality, complex texts such as these, and some assessments will include multimedia stimuli as demonstrated by this mini-assessment. Questions aligned to the CCSS should be worthy of students’ time to answer and therefore do not focus on minor points of the texts. Several standards may be addressed within the same question because complex texts tend to yield rich assessment questions that call for deep analysis. In this mini-assessment there are twelve questions that address the Reading Standards below. There is also one constructed response item that addresses Reading, Writing, and Language standards. We encourage educators to give students the time that they need to read closely and write to sources. Please note that this mini- assessment is likely to take at least two class periods. Note for teachers of English Language Learners (ELLs): This assessment is designed to measure students’ ability to read and write in English. Therefore, educators will not see the level of scaffolding typically used in instructional materials to support ELLs—these would interfere with the ability to understand their mastery of these skills. -

Burns Dominik Fleitmann Albert Matter Institute of Geology, University of Bern, CH-3012 Bern, Switzerland Ulrich Neff Augusto Mangini Heidelberg Academy of Sciences, D-69120 Heidelberg, Germany ABSTRACT Growth periods and stable isotope analyses of speleothems from Hoti Cave in northern Oman provide a record of continental pluvial periods extending back over the past four of Earth's glacial-interglacial cycles. Rapid speleothem growth occurred during the early to middle Holocene (6±10.5 ka B.P.), 78±82 ka B.P., 120±135 ka B.P., 180±200 ka B.P., and 300±325 ka B.P. The speleothem calcite deposited during each of these episodes is highly depleted in 18O compared to modern speleothems. The d18O values for calcite deposited within pluvial periods generally fall in the range of 24½ to 28½ relative to the Vienna Peedee belemnite standard, whereas modern speleothems range from 21½ to 23½. The growth and isotopic records indicate that during peak interglacial periods, the limit of the monsoon rainfall was shifted far north of its present location and each pluvial period was coincident with an interglacial stage of the marine oxygen isotope record. The association of continental pluvial periods with peak interglacial conditions suggests that glacial boundary conditions, and not changes in solar radiation, are the primary control on continental wetness on glacial-interglacial time scales. Prueba de ello son los restos de arte rupestre y yacimientos paleontológicos descritos en muchas cuevas o el creciente número de visitantes anuales que tienen. Sin embargo, en las últimas décadas los equipos de científicos y espeleólogos se han ocupado especialmente del karst en términos de cifras, con especial énfasis en grandes cavidades. Bien, atendiendo al tamaño de las mismas en su desarrollo horizontal o vertical, o de forma parcial, midiendo volúmenes de galerías y conductos, cámaras o espeleotemas, entre otros elementos. Existen exhaustivos rankings de los sistemas de cavidades de mayor longitud total de galerías exploradas, de las salas más grandes, de las cuevas más profundadas o de los espeleotemas más grandes en su tipo. Esto ha condicionando que, por un lado, exista un auge en la investigación de los sistemas endokársticos más grandes del mundo, y por otro, que paisajes superficiales kársticos espectaculares del Planeta hayan pasado a un segundo orden en cuanto a el interés científico o turístico. -

(December 2010) Brett Christopher Gonzalez, B.S., Texas A&M University at Galveston Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. Thomas Iliffe Anchialine blue holes found in the interior of the Bahama Islands have distinct fresh and salt water layers, with vertical mixing, and dysoxic to anoxic conditions below the halocline. Scientific cave diving exploration and microbiological investigations of Cherokee Road Extension Blue Hole on Abaco Island have provided detailed information about the water chemistry of the vertically stratified water column. Hydrologic parameters measured suggest that circulation of seawater is occurring deep within the platform. Dense microbial assemblages which occurred as mats on the cave walls below the halocline were investigated through construction of 16S rRNA clone libraries, finding representatives across several bacterial lineages including Chlorobium and OP8. -

Here, we review these records and the global climate teleconnections they suggest following the recent publication of the Speleothem Isotopes Synthesis and Analysis (SISAL) database. We find that low-latitude records generally reflect changes in precipitation, whereas higher latitude records are sensitive to temperature and moisture source variability. Tropical records suggest precipitation variability is forced by orbital precession and North Atlantic Ocean circulation driven changes in atmospheric convection on long timescales, and tropical sea surface temperature variations on short timescales. On millennial timescales, precipitation seasonality in southwestern North America is related to North Atlantic climate variability. -

BARTON1 Department of Biological Science, Northern Kentucky University, Highland Heights, KY 41099, USA FREDERICK LUISZER Department of Geological Sciences, University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado 80309, USA Glenwood Hot Springs, Colorado, is a sulfidic hot-spring that issues from numerous sites. These waters are partially responsible for speleogenesis of the nearby Fairy Cave system, through hypogenic sulfuric- acid dissolution. To examine whether there may have been microbial involvement in the dissolution of this cave system we examined the present-day microbial flora of a cave created by the hot spring. Using molecular phylogenetic analysis of the 16S small subunit ribosomal RNA gene and scanning electron microscopy, we examined the microbial community structure within the spring. The microbial communi- ty displayed a high level of microbial diversity, with 25 unique phylotypes representing nine divisions of the Bacteria and a division of the Archaea previously not identified under the conditions of temperature and pH found in the spring. By determining a putative metabolic network for the microbial species found in the spring, it appears that the community is carrying out both sulfate reduction and sulfide oxidation. Significantly, the sulfate reduction in the spring appears to be generating numerous organic acids as well as reactive sulfur species, such as sulfite. Even in the absence of oxygen, this sulfite can interact with water directly to produce sulfuric acid. -

Topics will include an outline of the present understanding of microbial involvement of weathering of rocks, formation and transformation of soils and sediments, genesis and degradation of minerals.
