Some years ago, she set out to write about her life as a young girl growing up on a farm and the many joys, hardships, experiences and events that she lived during that period of her life. Once done with that era she continued writing about her life after she was married and up to the present, in a sense, a short, if not complete biography. In addition to her short biography, you will find stories, events and incidents that occurred over her married life mostly concerning one of you. This binder, amateurishly put together by me, will at least give you and your children and even future generations, a history of her life, thoughts, loves, faith, and many other characteristics of herself. How many people can say they have a history of their mother or grandmother or great grandmother etc.? I, for one, have no knowledge of the lives of my grandparents or other ancestors. I would have welcomed the opportunity to have such history of my forefathers. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone would write their life story for the benefit of their children and future generations? For you, it's a souvenir of your Mother as well as a history for your children and future generations. Enjoy! Love, Dad Note to all who read the content of this binder: As was often the case, Mother (Eva) often made corrections or otherwise edited her writings but failed to delete or replace earlier versions. Hence, as I go through the various drives on the computer as well as other savings devices (CD's; thumb drives, etc.) I most always come up with numerous copies of the same article or writing. For example, "The Christmas Tree"-three different copies were found with three different dates as to when they were either written or edited. In such cases, if some of the versions were substantially different, I've printed and saved all copies. In this binder, you will find a copy of each. In most cases however, the copies are very similar with a few minor or insignificant changes here and there, but basically, the same story, in which case only the latest dated version was printed and included in this binder. • Firing the Canon: Multiple Insularities in Jazz Criticism
FIRING THE CANON: MULTIPLE INSULARITIES IN JAZZ CRITICISM By © 2014 Christopher Robinson Submitted to the graduate degree program in American Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. ________________________________ Chairperson, Sherrie Tucker ________________________________ Randal Jelks ________________________________ Tony Bolden ________________________________ John Gennari ________________________________ William J Harris Date Defended: April 7, 2014 The Dissertation Committee for Christopher Robinson certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Firing the Canon: Multiple Insularities in Jazz Criticism ________________________________ Chairperson, Sherrie Tucker Date approved: April 7, 2014 ii ABSTRACT Whereas many jazz scholars focus on jazz criticism's construction and implications of a single, or insular, jazz canon, this dissertation argues that what many jazz critics do is precisely the opposite. These critics disrupt the sense of a singular and insular jazz canon by challenging it through the creation of what I call an insularity, which is a bounded collection of artists and music with a definable tradition, values and established criteria which regulates what is suitable for inclusion. This dissertation argues that jazz does not consist of a single canon and music that exists beyond the canon's boundaries; rather, jazz contains multiple insularities that challenge the canon and vie for the opportunity to overthrow the canon in order to reach canonical status. This dissertation conceptualizes jazz critics as cultural authorities who create or deconstruct insularities through a variety of race, gender and nation projects. It examines the criticism of Leonard Feather, Val Wilmer and Nathaniel Mackey to highlight the numerous ways in which critics engage with multiple insularities.

  • Never Change 2.1
Never Change 2.1: A Look at Jay-Z’s Lyrical Evolution kashema h. www.kashema.com Never Change 2.1: A look Jay-Z’s Lyrical Evolution By kashema h. “Intro” Jay-Z’s classic album Reasonable Doubt (1996) turned 20 years old this summer but it has been two years since he has released another album. He released “Spiritual” after the extrajudicial killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. Jay is featured on the remix of “All the Way Up” and teamed up with DJ Khaled and Future to create “I Got the Keys.” Back in April, Mr. Carter made a cameo on his wife’s Beyoncé’s visual album, Lemonade as a family man. The last time we saw the lyricist in full rap mode (e.g. album, singles and tour) was for Magna Carta Holy Grail in 2013. The promotional On The Run trailer for the married couple’s tour stars Jay-Z and Beyoncé as bank robbers à la Bonnie and Clyde, and features all kinds of guns, ski masks, shady figures, cop chases and a line-up. In 2014, I started to think about Jay’s past criminal life as a drug dealer, and his references to it on his records. I let the thing between my eyes analyze Jay’s skills, then put it down—type Braille...you feel me? Last month, the rapper narrated the New York Times Op-Ed: “The War on Drugs Is an Epic Fail.” I went back to my study of Jay-Z and his lyrics with a more critical eye.

The purpose of this study was two-fold: a) to explore the experience and meaning-making processes of individuals who have maintained a weight loss and b) to explore how this learning manifested in successful weight maintenance and improved self-identity despite cultural stressors. This study was grounded in three intersecting theoretical frameworks relating to adult education: Transtheorectical Model of Behavior Change Transformational Learning Theory and Critical Media Literacy as informed by Critical Public Pedagogy. Narrative inquiry was chosen to study the nine stories of adult participants who successfully maintained a weight loss that bring meaning to the weight loss maintenance experience.
