MACO GENIUSfilm Technical Application TA Nr.152/1

A short summary of attributes: • b/w + transparent photographic paper • orthochromatic sensitised - Processing under red in every lab • for pictorial and graphic applications • for alternate processes like Platinum-Palladium, Gumprinting, Cyanotypie, Bromoil, etc. • for experimental creative effects such as copying, solarisation, sabattier effect, bas relief, line drawings • suitable for pin hole - can be cut to all sizes • high sharpness - extreme edge-effect • high resolving power - better than conventional photo paper • clear and stable 100µ polyester base, - high archival properties • short times because of high sensitivity, ISO25/15° - similar to photo paper • for manual and automatic processing • suited for display purposes (e.g. light boxes) • suited for overhead projection • easy handling and processing - similar to photo paper • available in sizes from 6,5 x 9cm - 50,8 x 61cm (2,5“ x 3,5“ - 20“ x 24“), roll 102cm

1. General data in regard of the silverhalogenide photographic emulsion: Type: Type: - chlorobromide-emulsion, orthochromatic, high silver content, high speed

2. Thickness and type of the basematerial MACO GENIUSfilm is coated on a clear polyester base, thickness = 0,100 mm

3. Sensitivity ISO Speed + Grade/ISO Range: MACO GENIUSfilm has a sensitivity of ISO 25/15° and a speed of app rox. P 400. This leads to short exposure times even at high magnification. ISO Range values cannot be determined since Lithographic are processed to individual standards. Thereby short exposure times are also possible with larger scales of magnification. By using the MACO ecoprint Universal developer controlling of the gradation (ISO Range) is very confortable. This controlling results of the proportion-dilution of the developer. The development time results from the proportion-dilution and must be found out individually.

4. Maximum density: Depending on the application and the type of processing, MACO GENIUSfilm achieves density (approx.) values of up to: max. Dens. = 4,0

5. Coating structure (top to bottom): 1. protective coating 2. lightsensitive emulsion coating 3. polyester-base • backside: Antistatic coating

6. Toning: 1 MACO GENIUSfilm can be toned in almost all available toners. Toning will generally be applied for projection and presentations purposes (light displays, overhead) Following some application examples:

Deep, brown blacks: A: Treatment in PEERLESS water-colours. B: Toning in LABOR PARTNER LP-SEPIA. Light brown/ yellowish: A: Toning in LABOR PARTNER LP-SEPIA with adding vinegar. Bluetoning: A: Toning in LABOR PARTNER LP-AZUR. Toning with LP-SELENIA A: Increase of max. density. B: Improvement of archival quality (image silver) C: Change of image tone Note: For best toning results with bluetoners prints should be underexposed 0,5 - 1 f-stop, since bluetoners add to image density. For gelatine toning, whether partially, or full image, the use of PEERLESS-water-colours ( USA) have been proven for more than a century. 7. Retouching: MACO GENIUSfilm is suitable for retouching work with normal retouching methods. Air brushing and spotting with brushes is possible. It is recommend to test the material with your individual technique.

8. Applications: see short summary of attributes MACO GENIUSfilm can be used for a vast variety of photographic applications. Note: By using transparent photographic material on the baseboard of the , a black card-board must be put under the MACO GENIUSfilm , so that reflection can be avoided, which soften the gradation.

9. Darkroom safety light: Protective filter red . Max. 15 Watts, minimum distance Lamp - tray 120 cm (a fogging test may be recommendable).

10. Information for processing: MACO GENIUSfilm can be processed in trays, developing tanks, as well as in developing machines. Suitable are all available quality photographic chemicals. A good fixing bath ( at the very least Hypam™, we recommend LP-FIX SUPRA) is needed due to the high silver content. Note: In wet condition the surface is delicate. To avoid scratches, take special care while processing. If machine processing will be applied, check condition of transport roller.

Hard developing: MACO ecoprint Universal (Art.No. EPP11): 1 part conc. + 3 parts water + 1 part LP-GELADUR = hard/steep gradation 1 part conc. + 5 parts water + 2 parts LP-GELADUR = gradation similar to photo paper, gradation 3 1 part conc. + 8 parts water + 4 parts LP-GELADUR = for shot and contacts in alternative processes like Platinum- Palladium-, Gumprinting, Cynatopie, Bromoil, etc. Hard stopping: 1 part LP-CITRODUR (Art.No.LPS41) concentrate + 16 parts water, for 1 minute Fixing: 1 part LP-FIX SUPRA (Art.No. LPX21) + 7 parts water, for 2 - 3 minutes Note: Harden the developer, harden the stoppbath, but not the fixing bath. Why?: The fixing time and the washing times are doubled. Scratches, which originate in the beginning cannot be avoided with the help of a fixing bath. 1.Washing: approx. 5 minutes by at least 20°C. Silver protection: 1 part LP-SELENIA (Art.No. LPH42) + 19 parts water, for 2 minutes ( see technical application LP-SELENIA). 2.Washing : approx. 5 minutes by at least 20°C. Wetting agent : 1 part LP-MASTERPROOF (Art.No. LPH11) + 100 parts distilled water for 1 minute. Drying : MACO GENIUSfilm can be air-dried or by use of RC-dryers. Dryers for baryta (fiberbased) papers are not suited.

11. Storage: Original MACO packages, once opened, should be stored in a cool and dry place. Packages feature easy opening on opposite side of label, punches under the lid allow for easy closing.
