The results of a herpetofaunal survey of Ongeluksnek Nature Reserve, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa are presented here. Combination of visual encounter survey methods and standard Y-shape trap arrays were used to conduct the survey. A total of 26 species (eight amphibians and 18 reptiles) were recorded, representing 29 quarter-degree grid cell records, of which 62% represented the first records for these units. Furthermore, we document the presence of three species of snakes (Crotaphopeltis hotamboeia, Hemachatus haemachatus and Homoroselaps lacteus) for the first time for the whole degree square of 3028 (approx. 100 km2). This study highlights the need to survey poorly known regions to enable us to understand and document the full distributional extent of species. We also discuss the impact of uncontrolled fires on the absence of grassland specialised species during our survey. Keywords. GIRIRAJ1 2 ,M.S.R.MURTHY1 &B.R.RAMESH3 The composition, abundance, population structure and distribution patterns of the woody species having a girth at breast height of $ 10 cm were investigated in the tropical wet evergreen forests of the Kalakad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve in the southern Western Ghats, India. A 3 ha plot was established with an altitudinal range of 1170 to 1306 m. In the study plot 5624 individuals (mean density 1875 haÀ1) covering 68 woody species belonging to 52 genera and 27 families were enumerated. The mean basal area was 47.01 m2 ha–1 and the Shannon and Simpson diversity indices were 4.89 and 0.95, respectively. Of these woody species nearly 51% are endemic to the Western Ghats. The four dominant species, Cullenia exarillata, Palaquium ellipticum, Aglaia bourdillonii and Myristica dactyloides, account for 34% of the trees and 67% of the basal area, and therefore constitute the main structure of the forest. Within this forest type, five species assemblages corresponding to altitudinal gradient were identified using correspondence analysis. Management of such mid elevation evergreen forests necessarily depends on knowledge of recognisable community types and their environmental variables. The present study provides essential background for formulating strategies for sustainable conservation of forest communities at the local level. -

Initially dried powder of stem bark from Scolopia crenata was extracted successively in hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol and screened for in vitro antioxidant activity by 1, 1‐diphenyl‐2‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging assay and preliminary phytochemical analysis was done according to standard procedures. This survey revealed the presence of phenolics & tannins, alkaloids, cardiac glycosides and steroids. The IC50 value obtained for DPPH inhibition were 406.425, 414.377 and 420.545 µg/ml for methanol, ethyl acetate and hexane extracts, respectively. The crude ethyl acetate and methanol fractions were subjected to column chromatography and were pooled together into five major fractions (F1 to F5) after monitoring with thin layer chromatography. The fractions thus obtained were concentrated and screened for DPPH radical scavenging activity. -

WHITING School of Animal, Plant and Environmental Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Private Bag 3, Wits, 2050, South Africa ABSTRACT: We investigated the thermoregulatory abilities and behavior of Pseudocordylus melanotus melanotus (Drakensberg crag lizard) in terms of the relationship between the operative temperature (Te), selected temperature (Tsel), set-point range (Tset) and field active body temperature (field Tsel), exposure to low temperature, body posture and activity. The Te range for P. m. melanotus was about 58 C (23.20 C in winter to 54.94 C in summer). In a laboratory thermal gradient, in a setting that is independent of ecological costs or thermal constraints, lizards maintained Tset (defined as the interquartile range of Tsel, after Hertz et al., 1993) between 29.00 6 0.36 C and 31.78 6 0.16 C in winter and 29.61 6 0.28 C and 32.47 6 0.18 C in summer. The mean Tsel was 30.08 6 0.14 C in winter and 30.99 6 0.11 C in summer. In the field, however, lizards achieved significantly lower Tb, which suggests that the thermal environment limited the Tb that lizards were able to achieve. Lizards were active for significantly longer and selected significantly higher Tb in summer than in winter. During winter, lizards spent a significant amount of time at Tb below their lower critical limiting temperature (defined by loss of righting). -

We measured males and females to determine whether this species exhibits sexual size dimorphism and whether there was a correlation between feeding ecology and body size. We also examined spatiotemporal and sexual variations in dietary composition and prey diversity index. We used these data to examine whether the foraging pattern of these skinks corresponded to the pattern of a sit-and-wait predator or a widely foraging predator. The average snout-vent length (SVL) was significantly larger in adult males than in adult females. When SVL was taken into account as a covariate, head length and width and mouth width were larger in adult males than in adult females. -

Because the ability to generate a high bite force might be advantageous for a species’ dietary ecology, morphological changes in head configuration that allow individuals to maintain or improve their bite force under the constraint of crevice-dwelling behaviour are to be expected. The present study addressed this issue by examining head morphology, bite force, and a number of dietary traits in the rock-dwelling cordylid lizards Ouroborus cataphractus and Karusasaurus polyzonus. The results obtained show that O. cataphractus has a larger head and higher bite force than K. polyzonus. In K. polyzonus, head width, lower jaw length, and jaw closing-in lever are the best predictors of bite force, whereas head height is the main determinant of bite force in O. cataphractus. Although the observed difference in bite force between the species does not appear to be related to dietary patterns or prey handling, the prey spectrum available for intake was greater in O. -

Is the Sunda-Sahul floristic exchange ongoing? A study of distributions, functional traits, climate and landscape genomics to investigate the invasion in Australian rainforests By Jia-Yee Samantha Yap Bachelor of Biotechnology Hons. A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Queensland in 2018 Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation i Abstract Australian rainforests are of mixed biogeographical histories, resulting from the collision between Sahul (Australia) and Sunda shelves that led to extensive immigration of rainforest lineages with Sunda ancestry to Australia. Although comprehensive fossil records and molecular phylogenies distinguish between the Sunda and Sahul floristic elements, species distributions, functional traits or landscape dynamics have not been used to distinguish between the two elements in the Australian rainforest flora. The overall aim of this study was to investigate both Sunda and Sahul components in the Australian rainforest flora by (1) exploring their continental-wide distributional patterns and observing how functional characteristics and environmental preferences determine these patterns, (2) investigating continental-wide genomic diversities and distances of multiple species and measuring local species accumulation rates across multiple sites to observe whether past biotic exchange left detectable and consistent patterns in the rainforest flora, (3) coupling genomic data and species distribution models of lineages of known Sunda and Sahul ancestry to examine landscape-level dynamics and habitat preferences to relate to the impact of historical processes. First, the continental distributions of rainforest woody representatives that could be ascribed to Sahul (795 species) and Sunda origins (604 species) and their dispersal and persistence characteristics and key functional characteristics (leaf size, fruit size, wood density and maximum height at maturity) of were compared.
