Hot Spots & Cool Discoveries SPRING SUMMER HOT SPOTS & COOL DISCOVERIES FOR 2017 TRAVEL TM TM Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have joined forces to further inspire the world through expedition travel. Our collaboration in exploration, research, technology and conservation will provide extraordinary travel expe- riences and disseminate geographic knowledge around the globe. DEAR TRAVELER, In 2016 we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the pioneering 1966 citizen explorer expedition to Antarctica by my father, Lars-Eric Lindblad. In 2017, we will be celebrating his 1967 pioneering feat: leading the first laymen expedition to Galápagos, and playing an instrumental role in establishing the tourism policies that are the still the foundation of the National Park’s guidelines today. We respect our heritage, are proud of the achievements we’ve recorded during our past 50 years, but are focused on the future with considerable excitement, given the newness and innovation ahead. This season we’ll inaugurate two new ships: National Geographic Endeavour II has been completely re-fitted to offer the best expedition experience in the Galápagos Islands. And National Geographic Quest, purpose-built in the U.S—on beautiful Whidbey Island, WA to be exact— will begin her expedition career in British Columbia and the San Juan Islands, before ranging as far south as Belize. In our 50 years, many changes have happened in travel—where do we as travelers seek to go? What do we choose to avoid? Do more of us travel to relax, or to seek inspiration and activity? Do we travel to know more, to feel a greater connection with nature, or to see places that still retain cultural and historical integrity? Perhaps it’s all of the above. Keywords: cultural memory, folk music, folk singers, media representations, nostalgia 1 Introduction Nostalgia has a central part in the construction of a folk singer representation, as well as with the imagery connected to folk singers. The artist types for different genres of music are constructed through and preserved on the collective level of cultural memory; in folk music these types are particularly persistent, even though the artists may not ac- tively perform the stereotypical folk singer image. Thus, because of collective memory, if an artist is referred to as a folk singer it might bring to mind a long haired young woman, often alone on the stage playing the guitar and singing sad songs about lost love and heartbreak. This representation, constructed mostly during the 1960s folk revival by and for Joan Baez, Judy Collins and others, is still the prevalent public representation reserved for female folk singers. This article discusses nostalgic representations of female folk singers in different media sources such as digital publications of magazine articles, interviews, and concert and album reviews.

    The musicians_______________________________________________________________________ Ross Ainslie Bagpipes & Whistle Ross hails from Bridge of Earn in Perthshire. He began playing chanter at the age of 8 and like Ali Hutton studied under the watchful eye of the late great Gordon Duncan and was a member of the Vale of Atholl pipe band. Ross also plays with Salsa Celtica, Dougie Maclean's band, India Alba, Tunebook, Charlie Mckerron's trio and in a duo with Irish piper Jarlath Henderson. He released his début solo album "Wide Open" in 2013 which was voted 9th out of 50 in the Sunday Herald "The Scottish albums of 2013". He was nominated for "musician of the year" at the Radio 2 folk awards 2013 and also for "Best Instrumentalist" at the Scots Trad Music Awards in 2010 and 2012. Ali Hutton Bagpipes & Whistle Ali, from Methven in Perthshire, was inspired at the age of 7 to take up the bagpipes and came up through the ranks at the Vale of Atholl pipe band. He was taught alongside Ross Ainslie by the late, great Gordon Duncan and has gone on to become a successful multi‐instrumentalist on the Scottish music scene. He has produced and co‐produced several albums such as Treacherous Orchestra’s “Origins”, Maeve Mackinnon's “Don't sing love songs”, The Long Notes’ “In the Shadow of Stromboli” and Old Blind Dogs’ “Wherever Yet May Be”. Ali is also currently a member of Old Blind Dogs and the Ross Ainslie band but has played with Capercaillie, Deaf Shepherd, Emily Smith Band, Dougie Maclean, Back of the Moon and Brolum amongst many others.

The pack provides a wide range of suggestions to embrace a cross-curricular approach, encouraging constructive curiosity and suggesting a variety of ways of communicating and responding creatively, using a wide range of interdisciplinary skills. Suggestions are made for individual and collaborative work, with the opportunity for some activities to involve the wider community. It is an exploration of the whole range of beautiful musical responses by eight musicians to the art and words of Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane, together with the new spells and paintings that appear in this artefact. The overwhelming and widespread response to The Lost Words and Spell Songs also offers a heartening opportunity for the redevelopment of a strong shared poetic and musical culture, rooted in an awareness of our environment, both local and beyond, something which has been eroding over time, brought about by the loss – of words, the ability to name, the capacity to notice. There is recognition of the importance of space – in art and music and literature and life. Space to think: to ask and answer questions, to observe, reflect, understand, create and share. Time to think about the absence, or threatened absence of things, and what is truly important to us, to create a sense of personal responsibility with regard to protecting and cherishing our natural world and the creative opportunities that are open to young people. He indicated that the winning team had been Christina L Macleod and Iain M Macmillan and that Christina had also obtained the title for best speaker. He advised that, with over 20 team from throughout Scotland competing in the completion, this was an achievement of which those concerned could be extremely proud. On behalf of the Comhairle, the Convener congratulated the winning team and wished them every success for the future. Mrs Isobel The Convener paid tribute to Mrs Isobel Conning of Stornoway who currently resided in Conning Dun Eisdean, Stornoway. He referred to the Comhairle’s recent recognition of Mrs Conning’s contribution to the communities in Lewis and Harris by presenting her with a framed letter of recognition.

    Noora Karjalainen IMAGINED, REMEMBERED, GENDERED: Narratives of cosy other in the media representations of female folk singers This article examines the ways in which contemporary folk singers Julie Fowlis (Scotland), Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh (Ireland), Emily Portman and Kate Rusby (England) are constructed in the media as what I call the ‘cosy other’. Discussed here in relation to these Western European artists, I argue that my concept of cosy otherness derives from the internal other that is both European and foreign (Bohlman 2000: 189–193; Gelbart 2007: 64; McKerrell 2016: 126; O’Flynn 2014: 238). Unlike the conventional definition of a post-colonial other and the concept of an internal other, the cosy other is not ominous, competing, or negative. Rather, it appears charming and unthreateningly different with singular cultural traits such as a performance language other than English, a discernible regional dialect, or a pronounced regionalism. The cultural baggage accumulated over time – for example the troubled history of both Ireland and Scotland with England – is wrapped up in cosiness, niceness and nostalgia. Studying this intermediate stage of otherness reveals the power structures within the popular music scene governing the female artists’ access to the field as well as their representation in the media.
