    INGMAR BERGMAN – HIS AUTOBIOGRAPHY THE MAGIC LANTERN Ingmar Bergman is considered by many to be the world’s greatest living film director and is also internationally well known as a theatre, television and opera director. He was born in 1918 in Uppsala, Sweden, and studied at Stockholm University. From 1943 to 1946 he was a producer and scriptwriter for Svensk Filmindustri and, later, Artistic Adviser. He has directed at theatres throughout Sweden as well as abroad and was Head of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm from 1963 to 1966. His many films include The Seventh Seal, Smiles of a Summer Night, Persona, The Virgin Spring, Through a Glass Darkly, Cries and Whispers, Scenes from a Marriage, Face to Face, Autumn Sonata, The Serpent’s Egg, From the Life of the Marionettes and Fanny and Alexander, winner of four Academy Awards. Ingmar Bergman has received many international awards and prizes for his films, including the Goethe Prize in 1976 and the Swedish Gold Medal in 1977. I When I was born in 1918, my mother had Spanish influenza. I was in a bad way and was baptized as a precaution at the hospital. One day the family was visited by the old house doctor, who looked at me and said: ‘He’s dying of under nourishment.’ My maternal grandmother took me with her to her summer house in Dalarna, and on the train journey, which in those days took a whole day; she fed me with sponge cake soaked in water. By the time we finally arrived, I was practically dead, but Grandmother managed to find a wet nurse — a kindly, fair-haired girl from a neighbouring village.

Samma år fotograferade hon en repetition av Olof Molanders Orestien på Dramaten. Detta ledde till att hon blev Dramatens husfotograf de följande 30 åren. Utställningen visar ett urval av Beatas bilder. Hela hennes samlade fotosamling med tusentals negativ finns numera i Musik- och teaterbibliotekets arkiv som hör ihop med Musik- och teatermuseet under myndigheten Statens musikverk.     Cinematic Thought: The Representation of Subjective Processes in the Films of Bergman, Resnais and Kubrick Gavin Extence Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Sheffield Department of English Literature September 2008 1 Summary Drawing on a wide range of critical and theoretical material, this thesis explores the representation of subjective phenomena, such as dream, memory and fantasy, in the films of Ingmar Bergman, Alain Resnais and Stanley Kubrick. My introduction outlines my argument concerning how film represents or communicates non-verbal thought processes, before examining theories and depictions of cinematic thought in the silent era. Subsequently, the thesis is divided into three sections, each consisting of two chapters and focussing on the work of a single director. In the first section, I explore Bergman's representation of subjective processes. Chapter 2 offers a close formal analysis of the dream sequences in Wild Strawberries, while chapter 3 examines the stylistic properties and thematic concerns of Bergman's later, experimental work of the 1960s and '70s. In chapter 4, I analyze Resnais' work, emphasizing in particular his early innovations in representing imagination, memory and streams of consciousness. Chapter 5 extends this analysis by examining the concept of collective memory (or imagination) in relation to Resnais' interrogation of France's recent history (the Occupation and the Algerian War). In the final section, I focus on Kubrick's work. Chapter 6 explores Kubrick's 1962 adaptation of Lolita and the notion of 'first-person' cinematic narration. My formal analysis of the film is contextualized through a discussion of its production history, and examines the relationship between cinematic thought, censorship and the values and norms of Hollywood.
