Senefeldera verticillata (Euphorbiaceae) is a species that exclusively occurs in the Atlantic Forest; it is used in the restoration and recovery of degraded areas and has therapeutic uses. Due to the scarcity of information on genetic patterns of this species, genetic diversity was characterized by the use of molecular markers, Inter Simple Sequence Repeats (ISSR). Leaf samples were collected from two populations located in the National Forest (FLONA) of Pacotuba and in the Private Reserve of Natural Patrimony (RPPN) Cafundó. Twelve ISSR primers were used, resulting in 179 amplification products, with 76% polymorphic bands. The genetic diversity values of Nei (H’) and Shannon index (I) were 0.329 and 0.503, respectively. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract This study investigates the changes of tree species composition and diversity along the gradient from fragment edge to interior, and between edge and interior habitats, on a regional scale, in nine Atlantic forest fragments (6–120 ha), in southeastern Brazil. A total of 1980 trees (dbh ≥ 5 cm) comprising 252 species, 156 genera and 57 families were surveyed using the point-centered quarter method. From the fragment edge towards the interior the proportion of shade-tolerant trees increased continuously. The majority of all trees within the first 100 m from the edge belonged to the pioneer-guild. Floristic dissimilarity was found to be higher among interior habitats of different fragments than among the corresponding edge areas or among different small fragments. Species diversity increased along the edge-interior gradient 1.5 times within the first 250 m. Our results support previous findings that the establishment of edge-affected habitats leads to tree species impoverishment and homogenization via the dominance and proliferation of pioneer species in the forest edges of severely fragmented tropical landscapes. We argue that conservation strategies which include the creation of buffer zones between forest edges and the matrix will be more efficient than the establishment of narrow corridors to connect fragments and protected areas. -

Mennega Nationaal Herbarium Nederland, Utrecht University branch, Heidelberglaan 2, 3584 es Utrecht, The Netherlands SUMMARY The wood anatomy was studied of 82 species from 34 out of 54 genera in the subfamily Euphorbioideae, covering all five tribes recognized in this subfamily. In general the woods show a great deal of similarity. They are charac terized by a relative paucity of vessels, often arranged in short to long, dumbbell-shaped or twin, radial multiples, and by medium-sized to large intervessel pits; fibres often have gelatinous walls; parenchyma apotracheal in short, wavy, narrow bands and diffuse-in-aggregates; mostly uni- or only locally biseriate rays, strongly heterocellular (except Hippomane, Hura and Pachystroma). Cell contents, either silica or crystals, or both together, are nearly always present and often useful in distinguishing between genera. Radiallaticifers were noticed in most genera, though they are scarce and difficult to trace. The laticifers are generally not surrounded by special cells, except in some genera of the subtribe Euphorbiinae where radiallaticifers are comparatively frequent and conspicuous. Three ofthe five tribes show a great deal of conformity in their anatomy. Stomatocalyceae, however, stand apart from the rest by the combination of the scarcity of vessels, and mostly biseriate, vertically fused and very tall rays. Within Euphorbieae the subtribe Euphorbiinae shows a greater vari ation than average, notably in vessel pitting, the frequent presence of two celled parenchyma strands, and in size and frequency of the laticifers. -

Is pollen morphology useful for supporting the infrageneric classification of Stillingia (Euphorbiaceae)? A morfologia do pólen é útil para apoiar a classificação infragenérica de Stillingia (Euphorbiaceae)? Sarah Maria Athiê-Souza1* Maria Teresa Buril2 André Laurênio de Melo3 Marcos José da Silva4 David Bogler5 Margareth Ferreira de Sales2 Abstract The palynological morphology of 24 species and two subspecies of Stillingia were studied using scanning electron microscopy. The analysis was performed aiming to verify whether the pollen morphology can be helpful for identifying species and infrageneric categories in this group. Pollen grains of Stillingia are subprolate or suboblate, tricolporate, microreticulate, and psilate along the aperture margins. However, the results showed no variation between the species and demystify the importance of pollen morphology in the definition of infrageneric limits. Thus, pollen data cannot be used to distinguish species groups despite contrary indications in the literature. Key words: Euphorbioideae, Hippomaneae, taxonomy. RESUMO Introdução: Euphorbiaceae está entre uma das maiores famílias botânicas, complexas e diversas. Oferece grande potencial de aproveitamento, com mais de 1 100 espécies, nativas ou aclimatadas no Brasil. As espécies de Euphorbiaceae têm grande destaque na atividade econômica, através da alimentação humana e na medicina a partir do conhecimento popular. Objetivo: aumentar o conhecimento sobre os usos atribuídos as espécies da família, visando contribuir para um melhor emprego das espécies. Métodos: a partir de revisão bibliográfica foram pesquisados livros, sites e artigos científicos, considerando o uso atribuído as espécies da família Euphorbiaceae, no período de 1824 a 2012. Resultados: obteve-se dados relativos a 149 espécies, distribuídas em 35 gêneros com vários usos, a maioria com potencial medicinal. O gênero com maior número de espécies com indicação de uso foi Croton com 58, seguido de Euphorbia com 13 e Jatropha com nove. Conclusão: os estudos expostos apontam para uma grande viabilidade no que diz respeito à utilização das espécies da família. Palavras-chave: botânica econômica, medicina popular, usos, Croton. The tribe Hippomaneae is discussed with respect to its taxonomic history, its placement within the Euphorbiaceae, its diagnostic characters (particularly the floral buds), current data on phylogeny and subdivision, and its general pattern of diversity. The tribe is represented in Brazil with 13 genera and ca. 120 species. A key to the Brazilian genera is provided. All Brazilian genera are discussed, citing relevant characters, recent taxonomic literature, and the current state of knowledge, sometimes pointing to unresolved problems. For five of the genera, published revisions exist; six genera have unpublished but completed revisions or are currently under revision. Actinostemon and Gymnanthes are currently the most difficult genera, mostly based on the absence of available up-to-date taxonomic references. For Mabea and Senefeldera, two genera with completed but currently unpublished revisions, additional data are given on aspects of their taxonomy, ecology and biogeography. Resumo A tribo Hippomaneae é discutida em relação à sua história taxonômica, posição sistemática nas Euphorbiaceae, em seus principais caracteres morfológicos diagnósticos, com ênfase no botão floral, em sua atual filogenia e subdivisão, e em seus padrões gerais de diversidade. A tribo está representada no Brasil por 13 gêneros e cerca de 120 espécies. Uma chave para os gêneros brasileiros é fornecida. Todos os gêneros do Brasil são discutidos sucintamente, citando-se suas características mais relevantes, a literatura taxonômica mais recente e o seu estado atual de conhecimento, bem como algumas sugestões para problemas ainda não resolvidos sobre os táxons. -

Juss. ex Spach. (Euphorbiaceae Juss.) no estado de Pernambuco, Brasil). O estudo foi baseado na análise morfo- lógica de espécimes de herbários nacionais e provenientes de coletas. A tribo está representada no Estado por oito gêneros: Actinostemon Sw. (3 spp.), Mabea Aubl. (1sp.), Maprounea Aubl. (1sp.), Microstachys A. Juss.(2 spp.), Sapium P.Browne (2 spp.), Sebastiania Spreng. (1sp.), Senefeldera Mart. (1sp.) e Stillingia Garden ex L. (1sp.). Os gêneros com maior distribuição no Estado são Maprounea, Sapium e Sebastiania, ocorrendo em todas as zonas fi togeográfi cas. Actinostemon, Mabea e Senefeldera sao restritos a fl oresta atlantica. São apresentadas chaves para identifi cação dos gêneros e espécies, descrições, comentários e ilustrações. The study was based on morphological analysis of specimens from various national herbaria as well as collected material. The tribe is represented in the study area by eight genera: Actinostemon Sw. (3 spp.), Mabea Aubl. (1sp.), Maprounea Aubl. (1sp.), Microstachys A. Juss.(2), Sapium P. Browne (2 spp.), Sebastiania Spreng. (1 spp.), Senefeldera Mart. (1sp.) and Stillingia Garden ex L. (1sp.). Widely distributed genera are Sapium and Sebastiania occurring in all phytogeographical zones. Actinostemon, Senefeldera and Mabea are restricted to the Atlantic rainforest.
