Widespread in the past, the Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus) has disappeared in most of Europe (including Bulgaria) in the 20th century. Although this species was reported from Southwestern Bulgaria in the area of Rila and Pirin it became locally extinct. In the end of 20th century it was breeding only in Eastern Rhodopes. With the local reintroduction of the species in Kresna Gorge since 2010, the high mountain pastures and cliffs regained their role of refuge for the Griffon Vulture mainly in summer. Here, we report and analyze the home range and seasonal presence of the species in Rila National Park, Pirin National Park and Rilski Manastir Nature Park. Home range analysis was based on data received from 8 birds tracked by GPS/GSM transmitters in Southwestern Bulgaria. The obtained results (Max. Daily distance = 195.3 ± 51.1 km; Home-range 95% kernel = 238 ± 207.5km² and core area 50% kernel = 6.5 ± 5.4 km²) indicated that these birds almost exclusively roost and feed in the already established Griffon Vulture colonies or join the seasonal gatherings of conspecifics, which are usually found within a zone of 15 km radius from a complex of feeding site or abundant easy accessible food in close proximity to suitable roosting places.

PHYTOLOGIA BALCANICA 17 (2): 237 – 246, Sofia, 2011 237 Avalanches on the northwestern slope of peak Todorka (Pirin Mts, SW Bulgaria) and their influence on forests Momchil Panayotov Dendrology Dept., University of Forestry, 1756 Sofia, Kliment Ohridski 10 Blvd. e-mail: [email protected] Received: March 10, 2011 ▷ Accepted: June 05, 2011 Abstract. We studied the avalanche activity on the northwestern slope of peak Todorka in the Pirin Mts (SW Bulgaria) and its influence on forests. The terrain was mapped by building a digital elevation model (DEM) from the topographical maps and with the help of aerial photographs. The terrain characteristics of the slope were found suitable for the formation of big avalanches and over 30 % of the potential forest area was seriously affected by avalanches. Seven percents of the forests were destroyed by avalanches repeatedly or during the last 50 years. The total area of the avalanche paths into the forests was 4.7 ha. The structure and composition of the forest community in a representative runout zone was highly dependent on avalanche frequency. The author maintains that, despite their high ecological role and threat to human health and life, avalanches on the NW slope of peak Todorka are neglected and studied inadequately. Historia naturalis bulgarica, 21: 215-256, 2015 Two-winged insects (Insecta: Diptera) of Pirin Zdravko Hubenov Abstract: A total of 742 two-winged species that belong to 43 families have been reported from Pirin Mt. The larger number of species (394 species, or 53.2%) has been found in the beech forest belt. The established species belong to 72 areo- graphical categories. The dipterous fauna can be divided into 2 main groups: 1) species with Mediterranean type of distribution (48 species, or 6.4%) – more thermophilic and distributed mainly in the southern parts of the Palaearctic. Five species of southern type, distributed in the Palaearctic and beyond it, can be formally related to this group as well; 2) species with Palaearctic and Eurosiberian type of distribution (694 species, or 93.6%) – more cold-resistant and widely distributed in the Palaearctic. 155 species of northern type, distributed in the Palaearctic and beyond it, can be formally related to this group as well. The zoogeographical character of the Tachinidae fauna is determined by the second group. The ration of the two groups is different in the separate vegetation belts of Pirin Mt.
