HUMPHREYS One of the strangest among the phenomena of American party history is the Democratic National Convention of 1924, in which all the elements that tend to divide the Democratic party combined to produce a bitterness such as had never been seen in a political convention before and to send the number of ballots required to name a candidate to the record figure of 103. Historians are familiar with the problems that caused the impasse and have frequently analyzed their significance. Students of politics find in the convention a demonstration of how diverse are the interests represented in the Democratic party. There is one question regarding the convention, how- ever, that has largely gone unanswered, and frequently un- asked. That is the question of how it happened that John W. Davis became the nominee of the party. This is an impor- tant question, for it represents the first time since 1860 that the party had gone south of the Mason-Dixon line for its candidate, unless Woodrow Wilson, born in Virginia, but nominated from New Jersey, be considered an exception. The nomination indicates also the triumph of the metropolitan element in the party that was to lead it to defeat in 1928. John W. Davis was the second choice, not of the forces which had kept William G. McAdoo in the lead during most of the convention, but of the forces of A1 Smith-the urban, Catholic, and financial interests in the party.

    Reviews and Notices Thomas Riley Marshall. By Charles M. Thomas. Mississippi Valley Press, Oxford, Ohio, 1939. Pp. 296, $3.00. There was much of interest in the life of Thomas R. Marshall. A successful lawyer, as success was rated in the small county seat of a rural county, he rose to be Governor of Indiana and Vice-president of the United States. He was a shrewd politician, and the possessor of a rather keen wit which he loved to indulge. He had ideas of his own and was quite independent, sometimes to the point where he could be called stubborn. He was honest and inclined to be frank in expressing himself. He was ambitious. He possessed ability, though he was not a man of broad vision. The fates were kind to him while he lived and have been kind to him in regard to his biographer, if it is true that a high class biographer is one who tells a straight-forward, unvarnished Story. Dr. Thomas has had access to the best sources of in- formation and he has used them intelligently and with fair- ness. He tells the story of Marshall’s life simply and nat- urally. Three short chapters cover more than fifty years. After being graduated from Wabash College in 1873, the “Country Lawyer” was scarcely heard of outside of the con- gressional district in which he lived, for thirty long years. In this period, he practiced law and enjoyed a fair income. He made many political speeches. He did not marry until he was past forty.

He soon began an association with Thomas Taggart, who was the county chairman at the time (see also: OMB 0030–0031, Thomas Taggart Scrapbooks). Bell was appointed an assistant to the city attorney in 1893, and continued his position during Taggart's three mayoral administrations, 1895–1901. Bell held various political positions, including precinct committeeman, ward and county chairman, and delegate to county, state, and national party conventions. He came to Indianapolis in 1877 to run the restaurant at the Union Station. He immediately became involved in Democratic politics, and worked his way up through the party ranks. Taggart was Democratic state chairman from 1892 to 1894. He then served three terms as mayor of Indianapolis (1895-1901). In this position he worked for street paving and track elevation, and especially for city parks, buying the land for several parks, including Riverside Park which was later named for him. In 1900 Taggart lost control of the city Democratic organization to southside "Potato King" James Keach. He moved to the party's national level, serving on the Democratic National Committee from 1900 to 1916, and as national chairman during the 1904 presidential campaign between Theodore Roosevelt and Judge Alton B.

    Walter Q. Gresham' By MARTHAALICE TYNER Walter Quintin Gresham was born on March 17, 1832, in a farmhouse near Lanesville, Harrison County, Indiana. His grandfather, George Gresham, whose ancestry can be traced back for many generations through a well known English family, moved his family from Kentucky to Indiana Territory. Mary Pennington, who married George Gresham, was a sister of Dennis Pennington.2 William Gresham, the father of Wal- ter, who was born in Kentucky in 1802, was but seven years old when the family crossed the Ohio. He married Sarah Davis in 1825. While serving as sheriff of Harrison County, he was killed by an outlaw. On the mother fell the responsibil- ity of rearing the five children. Walter, who was next to the youngest, was not quite two years old when the tragic death of his father occurred. The Gresham family were not overcome by misfortune. The boys developed into strong, healthful, young men of char- acter and courage. A schoolhouse stood in the edge of a wooded area on the Gresham farm, and here the children at- tended school during the winter months of each year. Walter seems to have made the most of his opportunities while at- tending this country school in the Gresham woods. Later he completed a two-year course in the Corydon Seminary, while serving as an assistant first to the auditor and then to the clerk of Harrison County. He taught his first term of school before he was sixteen, and another term three years later. The next year, 1851-1852,he was a student at Indiana University.

    Book Reviews 385 The volume has some shortcomings. Some scholars may fault Cayton for his heavy reliance upon published sources, and historians of women may find his coverage disappointing. Although he includes a chapter on “The World of Anna Tuthill Symmes Harrison, 1795-1810” and provides some discussion of Native American women and Sarah Hill Fletcher, an Indianapolis resident during the 1820s and 1830s, Cayton focuses primarily upon men during most of his narrative. Yet the volume remains a very good synthesis of the history of the fron- tier period in Indiana. Frontier Indiana is well written and should enjoy a wide audience. Moreover, it will be welcomed by any histo- rian who has an interest in Indiana or the Midwest. R. DAVID EDMUNDSis professor of history, Indiana University, Bloomington. Undoubtedly, Taggart’s legend has endured in the popular mind because it has some of the appeal of romantic fiction owing in part to the fact that Taggart exercised great political power from an unlike- ly place; ie., French Lick, then a resort town and gambling center in rural southern Indiana.

    CROWN HILL’S ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT Beauty of the Cemetery Due to Unselfish Spirit and Wise Management. NATURE’S CHARMS PRESERVED Consistent Course by Which Effects of Serenity, Peace and Seclusion Have Been Maintained. “The cemetery is an open space among the ruins, covered in winter with violets and daisies. It might make one in love with death to think that one should be buried in so sweet a place.” So wrote the English poet Shelley concerning the Protestant cemetery in Rome, in which by a strange coincidence, he himself was finally laid to rest. The same thought would apply in some degree to Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Not that it is “an open space among ruins,” like the little cemetery at Rome, for though it is surrounded by all the marks of modern progress. The atmosphere of sacred seclusion that pervades the inclosure seems to say to the waves of worldly activity that surround its borders, “Thus far shalt thou come but no farther.” The living who pass its portals fine themselves at once in an atmosphere entirely distinct from that they left behind, and the dead who find their final resting place amid its quiet borders must feel grateful, if the dead experience human emotions, that their mortal remains have been buried in so sweet a place. Crown Hill cemetery is a product of evolution, and is typical of the growth of Indianapolis through various stages from a frontier settlement to a straggling village, a capital in the woods, a sleepy country town, a prosperous railroad center, a robust community feeling its strength and demanding recognition, to a metropolitan city of national fame.
