3 JUNE 2010 ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER Sorry for the short delay this month but as most of you know while putting the newsletter together this month, we lost one of ABATE’s largest supporters, benefactor, and most of all friend. Aside from being a friend to all biker’s Greg Estes was an amazing father and brother. He will be truly missed. As we go about our events and business he will be remembered in everything we do. The biker scene will be forever changed. Please see the pictures and articles in this months newsletter that honor him. Greg we miss you and we love you very much.

Again, my apologies for the newsletter being late. Greg was a close friend and this month was very hard on everyone. If you ever got the opportunity to meet this selfless man you understand how difficult it is to let him go.

A Letter from Linda

Dear Greg, A flag flew over the United States Capitol today in your honor. Ever since your birthday last month I have struggled to find an appropriate gift or gesture that would let you know how much you are loved and appreciated. I was sitting in Senator Isaakson’s office last Thursday lobbying for Motorcycle Rights and I started thinking of you. I told him about your contributions to the community both riding and non-riding. How you opened up your heart and home to bikers and how you are always there for those in need. We decided maybe a ceremonial flag flown over the US Capitol might be a small start in letting you know how much your opinion, your thoughts, advice and generosity are appreciated. I remember the first time I met you just 3 short years ago. I started an ABATE Chapter up and was trying to get sponsors for a poker run to raise funds. Ghost told me I needed to come see you. I was shown into your office. There you sat, a mountain of a man wiping the hair out of your eyes working on your accounts. I was nervous and started talking faster and faster about the cause. You looked up and told me to grab some t-shirts off the self behind me. I grabbed two. You kind of shook your head, stood up filling the cramped quarters to capacity and loaded my arms full. As I was turning to leave you hastily scribbled a check for $150.00 and placed it on the top of the stack. This was the first of many such encounters over the years. You wrote checks, gave out t-shirts and opened Fat Cats up to ABATE providing free food, great fellowship and eventually providing ABATE with a new state office. You shared advice, contributed to my own political campaign and supported my run for Legislative Director. We are going to miss you Greg. We will miss your smile, your quiet determination and confidence. We will think of you every time we crank up the Harley for a ride and every time we drink a cold beer on a hot day. We will think of you every time we face the flag that flew over the Capitol and Pledge Allegiance to our country and the great men and women such as yourself that have made this country a better place. Thank you Greg. I am sorry I am not there with your family and friends but I think you would understand. I will be thinking of you as I lay flowers on my fathers grave at Arlington Cemetery and I know you will be riding beside me as we roar through DC for Rolling Thunder. Good-bye my friend until we meet again. Know that your legacy will continue on. Know that you made a difference in this life and we were forever changed for having known and respected you. Linda Allen

Election Connection We have been busy, busy , busy at ABATE of Georgia. The 2010 General Ses- sion may be over but the work and planning for next year has just begun. This is an important election year and from now until the election in November we will be bringing you a new section in the newsletter the Election Connection. This corner of the newsletter will be dedicated to providing you important information and tips on how we can make the best use of our combined talents, expertise and influence e to the state house next November. No longer will we let the likes of Representative Barbara Simms of Augusta choose golf carters over the thousands of motorcyclists when she stripped our Red Light amendment from a Bill. Or sit by idly while Rep. Tom Rice squashes our Freedom of Choice Bill. Now is our chance to flex our muscles and make the nec- essary changes to ensure our future and the future of Georgian Motorcyclists. Registering Voters As an ABATE member I am sure you are registered to vote. Is your neighbor? Are your family members? Are the charity riders? We need to get out and get everyone registered. Contact your county election Register to get forms and get the par- ticulars for your county. Each county has the discretion of implementing registration procedures. In most counties you can just pick up the forms hand them out at your events and encourage folks to mail them in. Some counties require folks to attend a two or three hour training before registering folks to vote. Contact your Register to find out how. Carry the forms on your bike and pass them out at events. Let’s make sure that all 200,000 motorcyclists in Georgia are registered and ready to vote. Primaries Did you know the real election is decided well before the general election in November? Primaries decide who is going to run on the ballot in November. Primary elections will be held on July 20 th with a deadline for s voter to be registered by June 10 th . Get out and find out who is running and support those who are biker friendly. The following pages taken from the Secretary of State’s web site will show you who is running and how to contact the candidates. Our nemesis Rep. Tom Rice has competition this election. We need to contact Rice’s opponent and gather his support in return for ours. Campaigns Now is the time to volunteer and help the candidate of your choice. Whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independ- ent we need you to get out there and help where you can. Contact your candidate and offer to put up signs, help phone bank or walk neighborhoods or attend or host fundraisers. Some of our own are running for office including Joey Brush for Pub- lic Service Commissioner. Volunteer and help our friends get elected. We talk a good talk about kicking the bums out but are you ready to walk your talk and actually work on getting folks elected that will help secure our freedom? Candidate Forums I found that a lot of the bikers in my community weren’t shall we say very politically savvy. Candidate Forums are a won- derful tool to educate constituents. Anyone can plan and host a candidate forum. Secure free space, invite the candidates and invite the public to hear directly from the politicians and have the opportunity to ask them questions. By hosting the event your group sets the tempo, determines the flow and asks the questions you care about and can direct the flow of in- formation and energy. If you want to take the next step have your district host a Candidate Forum and invite all of the bik- ers in your area. If you need help contact me and I will help you host a forum in your area. Now is the time for action! Now is the time to stand up and be counted! Now is the time for our voices to be heard! We are not done yet!

When you are rolling hard this summer, a good thing to keep in mind is to keep an eye on oil leaks. A common one on Harley’s is the shift shaft seal behind the inner primary. If it gets to bad it could cause it to get oil on the rear tire and that ain’t never good. Another common one is around the oil filter area. You need to keep it clean for your safety and the safety of the one’s you ride with .

LEGAL CHALLENGES TO MICHIGAN HELMET LAW Several members of ABATE of Michigan rode to the Lenawee County judicial building on Tuesday, April 20th to show support for a fellow motorcyclist who is challenging a non-compliant helmet ticket. Ryan Hildebrand, 26, is one of nearly a dozen riders ticketed this spring by Adrian police Sgt. Lynn Courington for wearing helmets that the state claims do not meet federal Department of Trans- portation standards.

Representing the group of ticketed riders is Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) attorney Lawrence “Katman” Katkowsky, who filed an appearance for the helmet defendant. A formal hearing was set for June 29 in district court, and Katkowsky said he will try to consolidate all the helmet infraction cases that are being chal- lenged for the June 29 hearing. “The issues are all the same,” he said.

He is taking on the helmet enforcement issue in Lenawee County on behalf of ABATE of Michigan, which also has a lawsuit pending in United State District Court in Grand Rapids, challenging the state’s DOT helmet rule.

One of the enforcement issues Katkowsky will raise is regarding probable cause to justify a traffic stop on a civil infraction. ABATE claims in the lawsuit that police have to look inside a helmet to determine if it meets DOT standards, and therefore cannot claim plain sight evidence to justify a traffic stop and request to inspect a helmet. No trial date is scheduled.

ANGRY FRENCH MOTORCYCLISTS SNARL TRAFFIC IN PROTEST Forty thousand motorcyclists demonstrated all over France in protest of a recent Government announcement to fine any bikers caught filtering through traffic (“lane splitting”), and more than 60 cities saw their roads blocked by hordes of angry riders who said NON to French authorities who propose to treat motor- bikes, scooters and mopeds like cars and require them to stay in their lane one behind another.

So, they behaved like cars! On March 13th the La Fédération Française Des Mo- tards en Colère (FFMC - the French Federation of Angry Bikers) urged all motor- cyclists to occupy the space of one car in each lane, and within minutes an enor- mous traffic jam was created that gridlocked the whole of Paris on a busy Satur- day afternoon as car drivers were stuck in traffic until late in the evening.

Earl The Pearl: Everybody knows Earl the Pearl. If Earl landed on Mars the first thing that would happen would be a Martian would come out and say “hey Earl how you been?” Not only does everybody know Earl but he will know you. And most of the time he will ask “how you mama and them doing”. Earl truly cares about everybody but I have never heard anybody say anything bad about him. So when Hope Ministries has a benefit we usually have a big crowd and this time was no exception. Crossroad choppers was the place to be on May15. At one time there were over 70 bikes there and there was people coming and going most of the time. The food was perfect with some really great ladies serving up the chicken and fixins. We had a DJ playing some good music and a lot of folks sittin around having a good time. We had a 50/50 drawing and great door prizes. We had a few bike games with good participation. Eve- rybody had a great time and when it was over there was a large crowd that stayed and help clean up and tear down tents and get up trash or whatever needed doing. Thank you Earl for being who you are. We love you. Also a special thank you to District 13 for all that you do.

37 JUNE 2010 ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER ABATE Reflections “Swap Meets” Written by Steve Murrin, The “Original Biker Lawyer”

I think back to a day when on a cool Sunday morning I would load up my truck and trailer with my Biker Law- yer stuff and head to the ‘Lakewood Amphitheatre’ to the now defunct ABATE swaps down in those old wood build- ings. The grounds were grimy and beat up and certainly beyond their prime. Nonetheless those hallowed halls were testament to real old school biker get together. For me, Lakewood was swap meet mecca. Every oddball weirdo biker dude fit in just perfectly. I spent years going to every swap meet ABATE put on there. 5 annual rituals of bikes, leather, cigarette smoke, sticky beer stained floors, and moderately ugly women. God I miss that place. Do you remem- ber the guy that used to show up with his girl on a choker at the end of a dog chain? The one wearing the leather S&M outfit? Where else could you go to see that show, have a $2.00 can of Bud and locate that elusive rocker cover to the ‘72 shovel that you were looking for? Nowhere! That’s what made those swaps so great. You could depend on them. Rain or shine. Winter or summer. Bad economy or good. The ‘biker life’ all neatly packaged into a sunny Sunday afternoon.

I clearly remember the vendors best. Some of those folks vended for decades without missing a Sunday swap. Ron from American V-Twin. Chief the sewing guy. Pam the jewelry lady. Larry and his crew from the Christian Mo- torcycle Association. ‘Ragtop’ with his hats, sunglasses and dew rags. Phil with piles of used parts strewn about the lawn outside the building. I can almost hear that Rolling Stones music blaring from the DJ booth above the stairs where ABATE officials took up their business. The place was dirty, drafty, a fire hazard, had toxic bathrooms, weeds growing through parking lot cracks, yet it could not have been more perfect. A perfect fit with our need, one that we have been unable to replace. Principally because it was most assuredly cheap for its size, centrally located near , right off a major highway, and in the midst of an urban forest where the neighbors were few and didn’t care about a bunch of bikers hooting and hollering.

We have tried to duplicate it to no avail. Like gypsies we wander from lot to lot. In search of the elusive sweet spot of low price, ample parking, rain cover and tolerant neighbors. It’s no one’s or no group’s fault. The economy took its toll. Vendors went belly up. Folks tightened wallets. The lease ran out. Almost the perfect storm to dampen a per- fectly good thing. I hope and pray it returns one day to its former unique glory.

Perhaps it was not the ‘place’ that we miss. Perhaps that ‘place’ is a state of mind. A state that has passed. A thought, a theory, a mindset or even a way of life that may be gone to the ages. Mindsets are often generational. The cookie cutter worker bees of the 50’s. The hippies of the 60’s. The fads and disco of the 70’s. All have gone the way of the Etzel. I cringe to think that the real biker life freedom lovers are dwindling. Without them who will the RUBs emulate? Who will the cops hassle? Who will the old ridicule and the young fear? Whose image will Harley hijack to profit on the fan- tasy of mid life crisis middle aged dentists and insurance salesman? I hope I am wrong. We need a swap meet we can bank on. It may not be so much the place as much as the state of mind.

Seems like so much of what I loved about Lakewood, we have moved away from. The ‘cash’ price, the canned beer, the leather halter, the occasional wafting of burned marijuana sneaking up the back steps from the loading dock. Perhaps it’s all in my mind. I close my eyes and see the scene. I feel the heat, the sweat on my neck. I hear the echoes in the musty building. I can smell the people, the old coffee, spilled beer, fresh leather, burned rubber and smoky V-twin exhaust. Day’s end, we’d pack up, lash down bikes, head north with new memories, new friends, new patches and cheap sunglasses. Sleep like a baby till Monday came. Face the world with adjusted perspective. Perspective that says “ don’t take it all too seriously ”. “ Enjoy this life ”. “ Simple is better ”. “ The Biker Life is a great one ”. Then wake up, get wrapped up in mortgages, bosses, spouses, kids, and life. Ratchet up the anxiety just in time for that next swap down at old Lakewood. To have it all melt away again like a revelation on a therapists couch. We need to reinvent those days. Lakewood the place is gone forever. Lakewood the ‘state of mind’ lives on. In YOU, in ME, and its up to US to not let IT die. Support your local chapter. Go to your meetings. Throw your buck in the hat. Let’s get the life revived. Let’s roll strong again. And remember, Look twice save a life, motorcycles are everywhere. Signing off for now, Brother Steve

38 JUNE 2010 ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER 39 JUNE 2010 ABATE OF GEORGIA, INC. NEWSLETTER MISSING Wheels of Freedom Murrin’s Musings GREG ESTES, Reminiscing an ‘Ol Biker’ Steve Murrin,The“Original Biker Lawyer”

We pull up the driveway past the old mailbox, past the pond, past the grandchil- dren scurrying happily, not grasping the gravity of the day. First gear chugga, chugga, chugga and lean left, kickstand down, motors sputter to a halt under the car port and quiet. The quiet strikes me. Apropos. We are at our friend Greg Estes’ house. He is inside. A real biker and a friend to all who ever threw a leg over. The call came to our mutual friend Steve Heffernan an hour before. “Better get here, today is it, we don’t know if he’ll make it through the night”! We left Killer Creek Harley and were there in less than an hour. It had been several weeks since I had seen him last. His big frame had suffered the ravages of the cancer last time I was with him. I knew what to expect seeing him now. Visiting a terminally ill pal is an odd experience. To do so on our scooters was fitting as our old friend Greg was a biker though and through, the real thing. We stopped short of the car port and walk quietly towards the back door. Steve knew the way and had been a close friend of Greg’s for many years. The grass behind us is freshly cut. I smell it. Someone tends to the yard. Someone tends to kids in the kitchen as we enter. We are met by his daughter Candice. Large tears rolling down puffed cheeks striking contrast with the big smile that greets us. I feel no anxiety as one usually does. The family is sad but happy to see us. We walk down a darkened hall to a back bedroom. I hear him before I see him. Labored breaths. As we enter the room our friend, Greg, the big man himself lays supine in a hospital bed surrounded by loved ones. There is the peaceful tranquility a hospital room robs you of. He is in his home, thank God for that. I have been in this scene before. The hospice care nurses who are angels help make the last days manageable. My father passed amidst family, friends, neighbors all in the comfort of his familiar bed in his loving home. I pray God I pass through to wherever amidst such a scene. Family and gray bearded biker friends around me, scoot- ers dripping oil in my driveway. Could it be that we get to our end that lucky? Steve leans over his friend and tells him he loves him. I feel my throat tighten, I swallow hard. Steve, a tough, loud, tat- tooed biker, whispers something in his Greg’s ear. I do not make it out. I guess what it is. Greg is not conscious. We trust he hears us and we speak peaceful words of encouragement. I pray they were heard. Everyone smiles. Strength is evident from their de- meanor. My throat tightens further. Greg’s daughters rub his hand. His girlfriend Melissa speaks encouragingly and lovingly to him, despite no evidence he hears us. I pray he did. My eyes water and burn, I swallow hard. Bikers we are. Tears roll on but no one really cries, yet. Greg Estes, biker, businessman, philanthropist, Dad, friend, loved one. He rustles in the bed ever slightly. Movement is difficult. The disease has not robbed him of his hair. It is long and straight and brown with flecks of gray. Not banded but free flowing over propped pillows. My mind races. He looks to me as a Viking waiting to cross to Valhalla. Large, barrel chested, tat- tooed. His eyes open but for a second. Flitting, they are clear, though not focused. His family responds to his cues, his small move- ments, his breath. He wears no shirt and is bare chested, hair like a great Russian bear. Elaborate Celtic tattoos on his chest winding circling, knotted, and never ending. Complex like that whom it marks. Below it are large letters of black ink, fresh and beautifully scripted across his mid section. I’ve never seen them before. I try to read them without being too obvious. I ask when he had them done. ‘A few months ago’ Melissa tells me with a smile’. Clearly after his diagnosis: “THAT WHICH DOES NOT KILL ME SHALL MAKE ME STRONGER” . I am stunned. I do not know what to say. In the face of death he taunts the reaper. He knows his fate. He did not retreat. His was not to cowl but to celebrate. To mark the occasion. TRUE BIKER SPIRIT! He is dying. I know this. We do not speak of that but we all silently accept it. The new art his way of daring his cancer, staring it down, and winning even in death. Strength shall be his in that next life. Strength has been his in this one. Passed to the people in this room. Through his actions, through his words, his lessons, and generosity. All hold strong. There is no hysteria, just strength and love. Tears drop, hugs exchanged, hands held in that great anticipation. We reminisce a while and walk to our bikes. Talk of bike weeks past, parties, fundraisers, and good times. Friends arrive as we leave. More well wishers. A steady stream. A testament to a giving life. I had known this man about 10 years. I knew him in business and I knew him socially, that being ‘biker socially’. I was his lawyer. I was his friend. He’d hosted countless parties that I attended. He hosted countless fundraisers we all supported. His popu- lar bar “Fat Cats” was and is an epicenter of biker friendly activity. He hosted parties to raise money for The March of Dimes, Juve- nile Diabetes, Breast Cancer Research, Injured Police Officers, Animal Shelters, you name it he gave us his bar, his parking lot, his support to make it all possible. He donated office space to the state ABATE committee, where they still enjoy rent free accommo- dations. He asked for nothing in return except ‘tip your waitresses and get home safe’. I ride the 40 miles home v-twin chugging a lonesome song. I think of nothing but Greg. I wonder if he is still on this earth as I arrive home. Yvonne has dinner ready; we rush to a show at the Fox Theatre. Intermission my phone rings. “J.B.Walker” shows on the dial. “Hello, J.B., What’s up brother?” “He’s gone Steve, thought you would want to know”, in a voice even raspier than usual. I swallow hard. “Thanks”. I hang up. I sit in the theatre’s darkness a shed a few tears unknown to the world till you read these words. All bikers have lost a friend. All bikers have lost a supporter. All bikers have lost a voice. God Bless Greg Estes. May we all ride through this life inspired by his generosity and his kindness. May we ride into the next with a style such as his.
