Mr. Ekblaw, who was placed in charge of the 1916 expeditin, will present a separate report. The results of the expedition, naturally, depended upon the loca tion of its headquarters. The enforced selection of Etah, North Green- land, seriously handicapped the work of the expedition from start to finish, while the. expenses of the party were more than doubled. The. first accident, the grounding of the Diana upon the coast of Labrador, was a regrettable adventure. The consequent delay, due to unloading, chartering, and reloading, resulted in such a late arrival at Etah that our plans were disarranged. It curtailed in many ways the eageimess of the men to reach their objective point at the head of Flagler Bay, te proposed site of the winter quarters. The leader and his party being but passengers upon a chartered ship was another handicap, since the captain emphatically declared that he would not steam across Smith Sound. There was but one decision to be made, namely: to land upon the North Greenland shore within striking distance of Cape Sabine. -

Cephalopods are key species of the eastern Arctic marine food web, both as prey and predator. International and national databases, museum collections, government reports, published articles and personal communica- tions were used to develop distribution maps. Species common to the Canadian Arctic include: G. fabricii, Rossia moelleri, R. palpebrosa and Bathypolypus arcticus. Cirroteuthis muelleri is abundant in the waters off Alaska, Davis Strait and Baffin Bay. Although distribution data are still incomplete, groupings of cephalopods were found in some areas that may be correlated with oceanographic variables. Understanding species distributions and their interactions within the ecosys- tem is important to the study of a warming Arctic Ocean and the selection of marine protected areas. -

Seabird Colonies and Distributions around Devon Island and Vicinity1 DAVID N. NETTLESHIP2 ABSTRACT. Nineteen glaucous gull (Larus hyperboreus) colonies, two Thayer’s gull (L. thayeri) colonies, andthree fulmar (Fulmnrusglacialis) colonies were recorded duringone intensive, and several short,aerial surveys around Devon Island in the summer of 1972. Observations were also made of distributions of seabirds at sea and at colonies on some adjacent islands (Dundas, Margaret, Baillie- Hamilton, and Cornwallis). Only 2 of the 29 colonies examined have been described previously. The greatimportance of LancasterSound to the present and future welfare of arctic seabirdsis discussed. RÉSUMÉ. Les colonies d‘osiseaur demer et leur distribution autourde de Devon et dans son voisinage. Au cours d’une reconnaissance aérienne importante et de plusieurs autres plus courtes autour de l’île de Devon à l’été 1972, on a relevé dix-neuf colonies de Goéland bourgmestre (Larus hyperboreus), deux de Mouette de Thayer (Larus thayeri) et trois de Fulmar boréal(Fulmarus glacialis). On a aussi observé la distribution des oiseaux en meret dans les colonies de quelques îles adjacentes (Dundas, Margaret, Baillie-Hamilton et Cornwallis). Andersen,3 Robert E.A. Stewart,4 Nynne H. Nielsen1 and Rikke G. Hansen1 (Received 19 April 2016; accepted in revised form 27 March 2017) ABSTRACT. Fifty of 58 walruses (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus) instrumented with satellite-linked transmitters in four areas in eastern Smith Sound, Northwest Greenland, during May and June of 2010 – 13 and 2015 provided data for this study. These animals departed from the feeding banks along the Greenland coast in June – July (average 14th June), simultaneously with the disappearance of sea ice from these areas. Most of them moved to Canadian waters in western Smith Sound. The most frequently used summering grounds were along the coasts of Ellesmere Island: on the eastern coast, the area around Alexandra Fiord, Buchanan Bay, and Flagler Bay (west of Kane Basin) and Talbot Inlet farther south, and on the southern coast, Craig Harbour. This distribution of tagged walruses is consistent with prior understanding of walrus movements in summer. In addition, however, nine tracks of these tagged animals entered western Jones Sound and four entered the Penny Strait- Lancaster Sound area, crossing two putative stock boundaries. Since these 13 tracks were made by 12 animals, one walrus entered both areas. It is possible that some of the tracked walruses used terrestrial haul-out sites in the largely ice-free areas of Jones Sound and Lancaster Sound for short periods during the summer, though this cannot be confirmed with certainty. -
