This is a ministry in which not only the Clergy but Readers, and those authorised to administer Holy Communion, if necessary, also share. Reverend Betsy and I regularly take Communion to those within the parish and beyond who are housebound or in care – it is in such places that we look to exercise a pastoral ministry as well as to those many individuals who make up the parish of St Nicholas’. But pastoral ministry is a work in which we are all engaged, priest and people together; we are not all called to be evangelists, but we are all called to be witnesses to our faith and so draw others into the fellowship which we so richly enjoy and from which we derive our strength. It is in that sense that ‘numbers’ are important. Fr Robert

PAGE 2 Face to Faith with AMY MORRELL What brought you to St Nicholas? Well my Parents started to go there as soon as they moved house down to Brighton from Orpington around 16 years ago and I believe I have started going from when I was born. What is your earliest memory? I remember going to Sunday school because my Mum used to do it. I also remember my sister’s baptism and running around afterwards with my friend but I was only around 4 then but they were my earliest memories. What do you like about singing in the choir? I get to sing – which I really enjoy and I like all the people in it – they are all really friendly and supportive. I also like all the different events we do like Christmas for example – all the carol concerts are really fun! I just like being around people who enjoy singing too.

Well I listen to anything really – I like Heart radio and that has a lot of pop music playing, so pop music is FACE TO FAITH my favourite and what I listen to the most. I love Christmas music though! TIPS FROM NICK... YOUR LOCAL GARDENER PLUMBING & HEATING Welcome to the gardening section. My name is Nick Milne, I run Emperor Landscapes LTD based in Brighton and I'll be writing for the Church newsletter this year.

We cover installation, repair I live in Brighton but was brought up in rural Sussex and have always had an affinity with and servicing of: the outdoors. Ten years ago, after working for various firms I studied a full time course at Ÿ Boilers, Cookers, Fires, Capel Manor and qualified in Horticulture and Landscape Design. Now, as you probably know there are many different approaches to gardens these days; on Water Heaters & Warm Air one end of the scale we find the "contemporary low maintenance" garden characterized by Ÿ its sleek lines and formal design and at the other, we have the resurgence of the "back to the Plumbing, Bathrooms, land garden", characterized by permaculture principles , environmental diversity and high Showers & Toilets levels of organic food production. Perhaps your garden lies somewhere in between? Ÿ Soil and Waste Water Pipes In any case I’m here to inspire you and guide you, whatever your vision for your garden. Ÿ Guttering and Down Pipes I really advise anyone rich or poor, young or old to get out into the garden as often as possible, research into its therapeutic effects are fast gaining respect in mental health circles. See www.thrive.org.uk. In our fast paced, screen filled lives to get outside and grow something from seed, (start with something simple such as a tomato or some peashoots,) smell the air and observe the seasons is a brilliant way to unwind and get back in touch with calmer rhythms of life, who knows you might even meet your neighbours!

For garden maintenance and garden construction of the more technical kind, you'll find my advert under Emperor Landscapes in this newsletter on page 6.

Feel free to get in touch. Nick. (Thanks for that Nick, we look forward to more tips from you for our gardens in the future). ALWAYS PRAY for others first, there is always someone worse off than yourself.

PAGE 5 WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT STREAMLINE TAXI’S Streamline Taxis, part of the fabric of Brighton and Hove... not just a taxi company.

Most people in Brighton and Hove know Streamline Taxis, or think that they do. Some people think that every white and turquoise taxi is a Streamline, it isn't. Brighton and Hove taxis are painted turquoise and white, whether they belong to Streamline or not. Streamline Taxis will always have their phone number on the side of the vehicle, (202020 or 747474).

It was October the 1st 1936, when the first Streamline taxi took to the streets of Hove, it was driven by Mr H Golds the chairman of the newly formed Hove Streamline Taxi Association. Brighton Streamline was to start on the same day as their Hove counterparts, but due to some delays, they had to wait until the 3rd of November 1936. The vehicles that both companies used were Morris 14’s fitted with sun roofs. Every vehicle was painted black, with a white bonnet and a cream stripe down either side of the car. All the drivers proudly wore a chauffeur’s uniform. Taxi driving had always been a hit and miss occupation, taxis could be expensive to hire, so therefore could only be afforded by a few people. Until the advent of the telephone, a taxi would “sit” in a rank, waiting for a bell to be rung from a hotel or a servant from one of the “Big” houses to walk to the rank and order a car for their Master or Mistress.

It was the telephone that changed the taxi trade. It was an expensive commodity, but by clubbing together, the Streamline drivers could rent a few phones. The new Streamline put telephones on taxi ranks, these phones were locked into boxes that only paid up Nicholas Milne (HND Hort) Streamline men had a key to. The new Streamline company charged less than the standard T: 07782 189034 taxi tariff, making it more affordable to hire a taxi. If four people hired a taxi, it was then usually cheaper than going by bus. Of course if you were lucky enough to afford a E: [email protected] telephone then you could call, and get Streamline to arrive at your door. See (Emperor Landscapes) Nick’s new gardening The Streamline concept of drivers “clubbing together” to buy their taxis, spread and in no feature on page 4. OUR PARTNER SCHOOL... St JOHN LEONARD’S SCHOOL, MPIGI, UGANDA AND THEIR SUPERB PROGRESS

Connecting Classroom and Opening Minds Back in October my colleague, Paul Smith, and I had the chance to visit our partner school St. John Leonard’s in Mpigi, Uganda. This opportunity came about from funding from the British Council’s ‘Connecting Classrooms’ initiative. This innovative project seeks to promote cross cultural links and reciprocal relationships between UK and global schools.

Our school, St. Paul’s, St.Nicholas’ Road, have been fostering links with Tom Wankwasi, the Head of St. John Leonard’s school over the last six years, with numerous visits taking place between our two countries. Our immediate impression was a hot one – equatorial Uganda, even in October was sweltering and humid. On arriving at Mpigi we quickly settled in to our hostel and set out to discover the delights of our new home. On Sunday morning we had the opportunity to celebrate at their own St. Paul’s Church, at their 9.00am The children at St. John’s were a credit to the families Mass. and teachers – their behaviour, their dedication to learning and their engaging enthusiasm gave both Paul Tom was then able to show us around his school’s site. On our first teaching day we were greeted by a wonderful welcome song at St. John’s open air assembly at 7.30am. The rest of the day was spent visiting all the classes and teachers, meeting our sponsored children (at St. Paul’s each class raises funds to support the school fees for eight children, whose parents have died, often from HIV/AIDS or are unable to work owing to illness or disability).

PAGE 6 Strange BUT TRUE Some things in life cannot be explained, just like the coincidences between two American presidents... Abraham Lincoln and J.F.K. Set out below are true facts about these presidents. Maybe one or two coincidences yes, but a whole list? This is definitely... strange but true. Both presidents were elected to the House of Representatives in '46.

Both presidents were elected to the presidency in '60.

Lincoln defeated incumbent Vice President John C. Breckenridge for the presidency in 1860; Kennedy defeated incumbent Vice President Richard M. Nixon for the presidency in 1960.

Both their Vice Presidents and successors were Southern Democrats named Johnson, Andrew Johnson and Lyndon Johnson who were both born in '08.

Both Johnsons were succeeded as President in '69 by Republicans whose mothers were named Hannah.

Both presidents were concerned with the problems of black Americans and made their views strongly known in '63. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1862, which became law in 1863. In 1963, Kennedy presented his reports to Congress on Civil Rights, and the same year was the famous March on Washington for jobs and freedom.

Both presidents were shot in the head.

Both presidents were shot on a Friday in the presence of their wives.
