Technical Report of MART Research Planning, Management, and Marketing Group to Quetta Observations Issues Recommendations Dr. Abdus Sattar Alvi Dr. Aman Ullah Cheema Dr. Sultan Mahmood Khan Mr. Sheikh M. Kamal Mr. Anwar-u!-Hasan November, 1992 PARC. USAID. MART. WINROCK Executive Summary The Arid Zone Rcsearch Institute's (AZRI) mandate encompasses about half of Pakistan or 40 million hectare of dry land. This area is very sparsely populated, and its inhabitants are amongst the poorest in the country. AZRI has made a sustained effor, to collect the information necessary for devising an appropriate rcrzarch policy. Extensive surveys of farmer practices and of household agricultural produ.tion systems were conducted for the generation of community profiles. The group observed that the most appropriate and successful way to improve Balochistan's range area is the establishment of Range Management Authority under provincial set up for management and rehabilitation of huge rangelands of the country. Chairman PARC may discuss the idea with provincial authorities. Practical recommendations were made during discussion and in writing to the scientists working in MART funded programs. These rccommendation shouldbe consideredi as suggestions for trial rather than guarantees for success hlbe process of zloption of these recommendations/suggestions involves administrative decisions, collaboration and trining of scientists/extension workers and farmers participation. There is a dire nec! for dose collaboration between Range management section AZRI and Range Management Institute (RMI), NARC. The same holds true for livestock component at AZRI and, sheep and wool progravn at NARC. These two programs can better perform at AZRI, because agro-ecologically Balochistan is best suited to the objectives of these sections.

  • Greening India's Growth
GROWTH I GRE Public Disclosure Authorized Public Disclosure Authorized PublicE DisclosureCOSTS, Authorized Public Disclosure Authorized DITED BY NDI V ALU MUTHUKU E A A TIONS NIN ’S M AND ARA MANI T RADE-OFFS G Greening India’s Growth India’s sustained and rapid economic growth offers an opportunity to lift millions out of poverty. But this may come at a steep cost to the nation’s environment and natural resources. This insight- ful book analyzes India’s growth from an economic perspective and assesses whether India can grow in a “green” and sustainable manner. Three key issues are addressed. The first is the physical and monetary costs and losses of environ- mental health and natural resources driven by economic growth. The authors undertake a monetary valuation and quantification of environmental damage, using techniques that have been developed to better understand and quantify preferences and values of indi- viduals and communities in the context of environmental quality, conservation of natural resources, and environmental health risks. The second part estimates the value of ecosystem services from the major biomes in India using state-of-the art methods with a view to preserving them for the future. The third section provides a menu of policy instruments to explore trade-offs between eco- nomic growth and environmental sustainability using a comput- able general equilibrium approach with particular attention to air pollution. The conclusions focus on the way forward in terms of policies, measures, and instruments as India seeks to balance the twin chal- lenges of maintaining economic prosperity and simultaneously managing its environmental resources.
