At nights and on weekends, however, she takes to the airwaves and club stages as her alter ego, D.J. Soul Sister. Tulane staff member Melissa Weber, a.k.a. D.J. Soul Sister, spreads the word about the music she loves. (Photo by Marc Pagani) Weber, who's hosted her “Soul Power” program on WWOZ-FM radio for 16 years, also has brought her show to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival as both a performer and interviewer since 2009. A respected live disc jockey artist, Weber opened for Cee Lo Green on the Congo Square stage last weekend and interviewed drummer Bill Summers on the Allison Miner Music Heritage Stage. “This year was absolutely great, maybe my favorite experience out of all four years,” Weber says. “I really wanted to tap into the fun energy of Cee Lo, and so I did that with the music I played. The crowd was so energetic, like I've never seen before.” She uses both the performance and the interview as a “means to the same end,” Weber says. “My mission [is] sharing soulful music and stories of the pioneers who have paved the way,” Weber says. “I'm honored to do both in order to support the music and musicians that I believe in and have loved since I was very young.” Tulane University | New Orleans | 504-865-5210 | [email protected] Tulane University Weber describes herself as “extremely camera shy,” so it seems odd that she could be so passionate about being in front of large crowds. But she doesn't see it that way. “I take spreading the word about soulful music very seriously,” Weber says. “If that means I have to go outside of my comfort zone to make that happen, then that's all there is to it. NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Jazz Fest Family Ties The 46th annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival came to a close Sunday, May 3, 2015, with attendance figures the largest since before Hurricane Katrina. The festival's producers approximated the crowds at 460,000, an increase of 25,000 from the previous year. Jazz Fest even had to shut down its stages an hour early on the first Friday of the Fest (April 24) due to severe weather. Big name acts like Elton John, The Who, Jimmy Buffett, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga and “The Killer,” Jerry Lee Lewis, performed this year. Saturday (May 2) had three highly popular headliners: On the Congo Square Stage was Clifford Joseph Harris, Jr., aka T.I., American rapper, record producer and actor. Elton John hit the Acura Stage and former London street busker Ed Sheeran wowed the crowds from the Gentilly Stage (opening with his two hits, “I’m a Mess” and “Lego House”). Great music and sublime weather on a Saturday made for a fantastic day at the Fair Grounds. Dr. John and Davell Crawford at Jazz Fest Other crowd favorites played the Fest, too, such as Steve Winwood, the indomitable O’Jays and Reggae icon Jimmy Cliff. Local faves were on hand to please, as well, such as Irma Thomas, The Meters and Dr. John. And on Sunday, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue closed the Acura Stage to a greater audience than the year before. HOWARD-TILTON HOGAN JAZZ ARCHIVE MEMORIAL LIBRARY The Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University was estab- lished with Ford Foundation funding in 1958 as the Archive of New Orleans Jazz and was posthumously renamed in honor of William Ransom Hogan, the chair of the Depart- ment of History who wrote the initial grant proposal. Ford funding enabled an oral history fieldwork project with pio- neers of New Orleans jazz under the direction of William Russell, the archive’s first curator, and his successor, Richard B. Allen. This generated over 2,000 reels of taped oral histo- ry interviews with musicians, family members, and observ- ers that document the stories surrounding the emergence of jazz in New Orleans from the late 19th century forward. It is the largest collection of jazz oral history extant. Through partnerships with the Grammy Foundation, the Jay Pritz- ker Foundation and the Music Rising Foundation, many of these interviews have been digitized and are now available streaming online from anywhere in the world. In addition to the interviews, the archive hosts a full range of bibliographic materials on jazz, including, manuscripts and vertical files, photographs, sheet music, films, and artifacts such as vintage phonographs, art works and a select assortment of musical instruments. The Archive has grown almost exclusively by donation. Re- corded sound holdings include notable donations from the collections of Al Rose, Edmond Souchon, and Tad Jones. Our most recent acquisition to the recorded sound collec- tion is over 3,500 78rpm records from the estate of Vernon Winslow, aka Dr. Daddy-O, the first black dee jay in New Orleans.
