Facts and Records History of Badminton In 1873, the Duke of Beaufort held a lawn party at his country house in the village of Badminton, Gloucestershire. A game of Poona was played on that day and became popular among British society’s elite. The new party sport became known as “the Badminton game”. In 1877, the Bath Badminton Club was formed and developed the first official set of rules. The Badminton Association was formed at a meeting in Southsea on 13th September 1893. It was the first National Association in the world and framed the rules for the Association and for the game. The popularity of the sport increased rapidly with 300 clubs being introduced by the 1920’s. Rising to 9,000 shortly after World War Π. The International Badminton Federation (IBF) was formed in 1934 with nine founding members: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Denmark, Holland, Canada, New Zealand and France and as a consequence the Badminton Association became the Badminton Association of England. Clearly the appointment of Tony Mordaunt as our Development Officer to the region has been extremely beneficial, with his ‘hands on’ energetic approach being well received as he has journeyed across the very vast waterways to develop the+ sport. Life Members The road show into the Island’s was a huge Heather Robson success and although Tony was faced with many Roy Ward (d. 19/12/2006) facility and equipment challenges, the feedback from participants has again been extremely positive, showing a pathway forward for the development of the game in what first appeared to Committees 2008 be a very difficult challenge. Oceania was extremely fortunate to receive an additional funding grant from BWF to assist with the road Technical Officials Committee show and we are committed to ensuring that we can continue the ‘road show’ format in future Peter Cocker (Chair) years.

An Leao Akeripa (Samoa) organisation that had to be resurrected, in effect a new one, as the old one needed to Office Staff be laid to rest. New beginnings and new spirit. The sport has come from relative Secretary General obscurity in ONOC to be seen as a Corinne Barnard developing one, with a future. New members, more of our members running Development Officer international events, Samoa’s first medal at Lynne Scutt (left Feb 07) the SPG, an Olympic Scholarship, and strong prospects for our players and our Bookkeeper technical officials to move into the Donna Millington international scene as they get experience in the sport, resurrection of the Oceania circuit and Oceania encouragement awards for Delegates players. I reflect sadly on the passing of the Hon H R Badminton World Federation Roy Ward early in Robin Bryant 2007. Roy was a founding member of our Confederation and a person of immense commitment and vision. He played a large role in the development of the sport in Australia Life Members and in Oceania and was a hugely respected Heather Robson person in the international badminton scene.
