Abstract: The Cistercian order is of acoustic interest because previous research has hypothesized that Cistercian architectural structures were designed for longer reverberation times in order to reinforce Gregorian chants. The presented study focused on an archaeoacacoustics analysis of the Cistercian Beaulieu Abbey (Hampshire, England, UK), using Geometrical Acoustics (GA) to recreate and investigate the acoustical properties of the original structure. To construct an acoustic model of the Abbey, the building’s dimensions and layout were retrieved from published archaeology research and comparison with equivalent structures. Absorption and scattering coefficients were assigned to emulate the original room surface materials’ acoustics properties. CATT-Acoustics was then used to perform the acoustics analysis of the simplified building structure. Shorter reverbera- tion time (RTs) was generally observed at higher frequencies for all the simulated scenarios. Low speech intelligibility index (STI) and speech clarity (C50) values were observed across Abbey’s nave section. The ICOMOS Charter for the Interpretation and Presentation of Cultural Heritage Sites Reviewed and revised under the Auspices of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Interpretation and Presentation Ratified by the 16 th General Assembly of ICOMOS Quebec, Canada 4 October 2008 Preamble Definitions Objectives Principles 1 PREAMBLE Since its establishment in 1965 as a worldwide organisation of heritage professionals dedicated to the study, documentation, and protection of cultural heritage sites, ICOMOS has striven to promote the conservation ethic in all its activities and to help enhance public appreciation of humanity’s material heritage in all its forms and diversity. As noted in the Charter of Venice (1964) “It is essential that the principles guiding the preservation and restoration of ancient buildings should be agreed and be laid down on an international basis, with each country being responsible for applying the plan within the framework of its own culture and traditions.” Subsequent ICOMOS charters have taken up that mission, establishing professional guidelines for specific conservation challenges and encouraging effective communication about the importance of heritage conservation in every region of the world. These earlier ICOMOS charters stress the importance of public communication as an essential part of the larger conservation process (variously describing it as “dissemination,” “popularization,” “presentation,” and “interpretation”). They implicitly acknowledge that every act of heritage conservation—within all the world’s cultural traditions - is by its nature a communicative act. From the vast range of surviving material remains and intangible values of past communities and civilisations, the choice of what to preserve, how to preserve it, and how it is to be presented to the public are all elements of site interpretation. -

Nello loved art, and he loved the miller’s daughter, Alois. The miller did not like Nello, though, because Nello was poor. He did not let Alois see the boy again. Nello decided to enter an art contest that was to be judged by the artist Rubens. He hoped to win the contest and become famous so that he could marry Alois. But things went from bad to worse. First, his grandfather died. Then the miller accused him of stealing wheat from his mill. Because of that, Nello lost all of his customers, and he and Patrasche were kicked out of the hut. Then Patrasche found a wallet with a lot of money in it. It was the miller’s, and Nello returned it to the miller’s wife. When the miller heard about it, he wanted to find Nello and Patrasche and take them into his home. But Nello had gone into the forest with Patrasche after he found out that he did not win the contest. The next morning, a woodcutter found their frozen bodies in the snow. -

Environmental Studies Archaeology as Restoration Ecology: A Model from SunWatch Indian Village/ Archaeological Park (33My57)(87 pp.) Director of Thesis: Elliot Abrams This research is intended to demonstrate how SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park presents possibilities for how restoration ecology and archaeology can augment and inform each other by looking at both the site and the environmental restoration at the site from an historical ecology perspective. There are two major themes of this work: first, the application of archaeological data to modern environmental issues and second, the importance of viewing landscapes as both natural and cultural phenomena which interact in a series of complex relationships throughout time. I present a comprehensive overview of the site, providing the paleothnobotanical data collected by previous researchers in order to show how such archaeological data can be used to inform restoration work. The research ends with a presentation of how SunWatch can provide a model for doing this work in other places, as well as a series of questions and criteria necessary for determining when and where it is appropriate. -

University of Durham (UK). Introduction The visual primacy of rock-art imagery can sometimes blind researchers to equally important but less obvious, non-visual aspects of rock art. Recent work from southern Africa indicates that certain San rock engravings were hammered, rubbed, cut and flaked in order to produce sound; to touch certain numinous images and rocks; and to possess pieces of potent places. Ouzman 2001: 237. A significant amount of evidence exists for the significance of organised sound in prehistory (Seewald 1934; Megaw 1968; Wyatt 2009). Research in this area has progressed for over 30 years, for example within the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) International Study Group for Music Archaeology (ISGMA). This includes the discovery of fragmentary sound making devices dated to 40,000 BP (Conard et al 2009). -

Contemporary understanding of the heritage management takes into account all relevant (i.e. site/county/country/region specific factors) be it social or economic beside essential preservation. It tends toward ensuring tangible (and intangible, or more precise indirect) benefits for local communities and by this toward development of the society in general. Critical heritage studies over the last few years significantly influenced perception of heritage, thus consequently the essence of heritage management and heritage interpretation. Stress on participative approach became crucial, where multi/poli-vocality is self-understandable. Surprisingly this practice could be easily tracked to early 1970s and the eco-museums movement which is quite revealing experience. Paper tends to demonstrate how practices of eco-museums could be interlinked with the very contemporary requests - needs for participative heritage interpretation and management approaches.
