PROGRESS Photos by Kirk Seven years of cosplay in Boystown. Happy anniversary! SCARLET Photos by Kirk 8 nightspots Jan. 21, 2015 DANCING ABOUT ARCHITECTURE by Marc “Moose” Moder STARTING FRESH WITH MADONNA, BJORK, KELLY AND MORE 2014 wasn’t a dismal year in music, but it wasn’t the best. Sales were down over 10% in all formats except vinyl, and only three albums (Frozen, Sam Smith and Taylor Swift) went platinum. Not even beloved acts like Iggy, Nicki or Beyonce sold a million on their new CDs. Hopefully this year, with possible new albums by Adele, Duran Duran, Giorgio Moroder, No Doubt and the queen of pop, Madonna, will improve. While none of these artists have firm dates yet, let’s look at ones we can rely on (maybe) for early 2015. February looks iffy for a few veterans. Bob Dylan releases his Sinatra covers album, Shadows in the Night; Diana Krall goes pop with the criminally bad Wallflower album; and Kid Rock releases something (we’ll leave that there), so let’s look to the kids. The powerful, award-winning, pop/rock band Imagine Dragons releases Smoke + Mirrors, their follow up to Night Visions. Even if it’s not as great, we can be happy they won’t be playing “Radioactive” on every TV show as they’ve done for the last two years. February also sees Ricky Martin releasing a new Latin album A Quien Quiera Escuchar, and from the sound of the first single, “Adios,” he’s really back with a Bang Bang. If we’ve gotten to mainstream for you, UK folk rocker Frank Turner is set to release his sixth album. For those not familiar, Frank can only be compared to peak era Billy Bragg: powerful, humorous, political and brilliant. And a bit sexy as well. Worth looking into for a change. March is looking much brighter with new full lengths promised by Madonna (Rebel Heart), Kelly Clarkson (Piece by Piece) and Bjork (Vulnicura). The latter could be the most exciting as she’s been working with ground-breaking producer Arca (along with Haxan Cloak) who’s worked on Kanye’s Yeezus and just put out an amazing solo album as well. Hopefully they can get her sound a bit more accessible than the last decade of work. As for Madonna and Kelly, we’ll see. So far the pre-releases have been fine and familiar, but nothing exciting or ground-breaking for either, but we have hope. It’s too early in the year to give up hope on a musical turnaround in 2015 for all! 10nightspots Jan. 21, 2015 nightspots 11 Jan. 21, 2015 Read the sign. BERLIN Photos by Kirk Bear season!
