Remember that when you start breastfeeding your breasts will be much larger than during pregnancy…so don’t think you can purchase a bra during pregnancy to fit while breastfeeding. You will have to get a larger size for growth or wait until you breastfeed before purchasing a breastfeeding bra. Most moms safely buy one cup size larger if they are buying them while pregnant. • Comfortable nursing bras ~ Get a bra in a fabric that won’t irritate your skin or straps that won’t cut into your shoulders…thicker straps are best. • Cotton bras are great because they decrease your chances of getting thrush (yeast infection) caused through dampness. • Convenience ~ Is it easy to open for breastfeeding? Will you be able to easily unhook it with only one hand? • Is there still enough space for nursing pads? • Does it support your breasts well? You should have all the benefits of a regular bra. This is important as you don’t want to end up straining your back. • Underwired bras and breastfeeding ~ Are you looking for an underwire bra or wireless nursing bra? It is actually not recommended using underwire nursing bras because they are known to reduce milk production and even lead to blocked milk ducts and mastitis. If you want to wear an underwire breastfeeding bra, make sure it doesn’t put unnecessary pressure on your breasts.

    Breastfeeding Helpful Hints for Nipple Care During pregnancy and breastfeeding, breasts and nipples change in size, shape and sensitivity. This is a normal part of making milk to feed babies. General Breast and Nipple Care • Wash and dry breasts and nipples as usual when you take a bath or shower. • If you leak some milk onto breast pads, try to change the pads when they get damp. Try to keep the breast and nipple dry so that you don’t get a rash. • Wear a soft and supportive nursing bra. Try to stay away from underwire bras if possible — the wires can sometimes block milk flow. • After breastfeeding, leave a little expressed breast milk on the nipple and let it air dry. Good Latch Keeps Nipples Comfortable In general, breastfeeding can be a little uncomfortable at first while mothers and babies are learning. Practice makes perfect! Using good positioning and latch-on is very important and will cut down on the chances of mom feeling discomfort or pain during a feeding. After about 2 weeks of breastfeeding using good positioning and latch-on, much of the discomfort should be gone. Use Good Latch to Prevent Sore Nipples: • Hold baby close to you, facing the nipple. Support baby’s body and head. • When latching on, point your nipple toward the roof of the baby’s mouth. Have baby take a big mouthful of nipple and breast. Baby’s chin should touch the breast. • If there is any pinching or pain when baby is on the breast, it could mean the breast is not far enough in baby’s mouth.

    REGIONAL HEALTH EDUCATION REGIONAL HEALTH EDUCATION Prenatal Breast Care How do I get ready to breastfeed? You don’t have to do anything! Your body knows what to do. Your breasts have been changing during your pregnancy just for this reason. • Your breasts may get bigger and feel tender when touched. This tenderness should go away after the third or fourth month of pregnancy. • During pregnancy, hormones start to prepare your breasts for breastfeeding (lactation). The milk ducts in your breasts start collecting “colostrum,” the milk that appears the first few days after birth. Colostrum is the perfect first food for your baby. It has lots of antibodies to keep your baby from getting sick. Sometimes a little colostrum may leak out during pregnancy. If this happens, use disposable or cotton breast pads (without plastic liners) to absorb it. Do not express or pump out the colostrum. • The area around the nipples (the areola) will get darker. Glands surrounding the areola get bigger during pregnancy. These glands decrease bacteria and they naturally moisturize and protect the areola and the nipple. While you are pregnant, don’t wash with soaps or put oil or lotion on the nipples. You don’t want to work against your body’s natural way of getting ready to breastfeed. Can I wear regular bras while I am pregnant? For the most part yes, although underwire bras are not recommended. • If your breasts get bigger, a supportive, cotton bra may be more comfortable during pregnancy and while you are breastfeeding. This may also protect the breast tissue from stretching too much.
