Don't Let the Future Pass You by Iterative Dystopias On
DON’T LET THE FUTURE PASS YOU BY ITERATIVE DYSTOPIAS ON THE POSTMILLENNIAL SCREEN Blythe Victoria Chandler Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy December 2015 School of Culture and Communication University of Melbourne Produced on archival quality paper ABSTRACT In the decade 2001-2010, films which presented spectacular futures dominated the box office. In contrast, Code 46 (2003), 2046 (2004) and Inception (2010) conceived immediately recognisable tomorrows, pessimistic futures firmly rooted in the socio- historical present. Despite their divergent production backgrounds, differing story arcs and disparate aesthetics, this thesis contends that these texts are key, early examples of a new subcycle of films it titles Iterative Dystopia. Using a social science fiction criticism methodology, this thesis conducts an interdisciplinary investigation which draws on science fiction genre analysis, dystopian narrative theory and contemporary sociological concepts to define the formal characteristics of the collection and offers fresh readings of the texts. This thesis finds that Iterative Dystopias are defined by the theme of perpetual liminality, an original concept developed following the work of sociologist Arpad Szakolczai. Iterative Dystopia’s perpetually liminal protagonists trace iterative paths across their narrative arcs, searching for an alternative to the continuous transitions of lives lived in this in-between state. Their goal is personal. They just want a place to call home. In direct contrast to the conventional dystopian protagonist, these characters are seeking their utopia within the familiar. These characters are, however, thwarted in their attempts to find a sense of belonging. Through a close textual analysis, this thesis explores three of the narrative environments in which these characters conduct their quotidian existence: the home, the relationship and the mind; and establishes that Iterative Dystopia’s protagonists are frustrated by paradoxes. -

i ntroduction The “Megarhetorics” of Global Development J. Blake Scott and Rebecca Dingo Waves crash over a pristine beach; birds sing cheerfully as the camera pans over lush tropical foliage. The serenity of the scene is quickly inter- rupted, however, by the sound of a helicopter and images of urban decay. Over the echo of chaos and gunshots, a TV reporter’s voice states: “The [Jamaican] government has called up the national reserves as civil unrest grips the nation this evening” (Life and Debt). The reporter pauses as the camera shows chaotic rioting, then cuts to a scene of women, children, and men injured and bleeding; we watch a set of Jamaican observers, who look not unlike those mired in the riots, surveying the chaos on their television. Over this set of concerned-looking citizens watching the violence, the re- porter continues: “Food and major commodities remain low. Several persons have been shot, or injured, or killed. Hospitals, airlines, and vendors are hurting from the wound[s] of violent protests. A team from the IMF [International Monetary Fund], which is currently in Jamaica, is wrapping up a four-day visit for a technical assessment of the country’s financial situation” Life( and Debt). The scene then shifts to a television set showing a man standing at a podium. In stark contrast to the previously depicted black Jamaican people 1 © 2012 University of Pittsburgh Press. 97TH ANNUAL HONORS CONVOCATION MARCH 15, 2020 2:00 P.M. On these occasions, the University publicly recognizes and commends the undergraduate students in its schools and colleges who have earned distinguished academic records or have excelled as leaders in the community. It is with great pride that the University honors those students who have most clearly and effectively demonstrated academic excellence, dynamic leadership, and inspirational volunteerism. Bookkeeping: Discourses of Debt in Caribbean Canadian Literature by Lisa Camille van der Marel A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Lisa Camille van der Marel, 2018 ABSTRACT This thesis examines representations of debt and obligation in works of Caribbean Canadian literature published between 1997 and 2007. It uses these representations to discuss the relationship between postcolonial, global, and diasporic approaches to cultural studies. These disciplinary distinctions draw explicit and implicit divisions between the colonial, the postcolonial, and the transnational as discrete historical moments in a teleologic progression. Against such divisions, literary works by David Chariandy, Ramabai Espinet, Dionne Brand, and Nalo Hopkinson suggest that colonial pasts do not remain in the past but continue to overdetermine the ‘transnational’ present. Intriguingly, each of these authors uses the language of debt and obligation to describe these temporal and geographical entanglements. This thesis draws on new economic criticism, memory studies, theories of recognition, treaty citizenship, and Afro-pessimism to argue firstly that Caribbean Canadian literature’s representations of debt refute emerging neo-Marxist theories of debt’s governmentality offered in response to the 2008 global financial crisis, and secondly, that they expose diaspora studies’ underlying valuation of individual autonomy and possessive individualism. By representing colonial pasts as outstanding and unpayable debts, fictional and nonfictional works dispute the seemingly clean breaks contemporary scholarship and political debates can draw between colonial pasts and transnational futures. Debt, at its simplest, is any exchange not brought to completion; Canada’s present is a space of incomplete—and incompletable—cultural, economic, and intellectual exchanges. -

The wind gently sways the surrounding palm trees creating a relaxing lullaby to your nerves and built up stress. Sweet scents of fresh fruit dazzle your nostrils and pull at your stomach. Relentless sunshine keeps you lackadaisical but still upbeat. Do you have the scene painted yet? When people are prompted to think about the Caribbean, it’s these exact notions that tend to come to mind. Interestingly enough, it is these so-called “icons” of the Caribbean that draw out thousands of vacationers annually to escape the doom and bore of their lives. Yet, it’s all a mirage. The imagery we all conjure up is far from original, and ultimately a byproduct of colonialism. The Caribbean is a locale that has been conquered, exploited, and manicured to continuously benefit particular people. Moreover, those particular people have repetitively failed to be the locals who have ceaselessly endured struggle after struggle. The focal point of such a place has been slanted in the wrong direction for too long and now condoned by the “tourist veil”. Through my research I hope to bring attention to how the local economies and people have been frequently transformed and transplanted. -
