The plaque honours the defense of Hong Kong, where Canadian forces fought against the Japanese invasion of 1941. Nearly 300 Canadians lost their lives in the battle, including 14 residents of Selkirk and the surround- ing area. The plaque installation and presen- tation took place on July 8, and fea- tured a few guest speakers, including Selkirk Mayor Larry Johannson. Johannson said the Hong Kong inva- sion deserves more attention and re- spect from the general public. “I’m very proud that we have the plaque here. It was a very important battle, but I feel like it deserves more attention,” Johannson said. “The death toll was huge, and many brave sol- diers gave their lives to defend Hong Kong. The fact that they defended their post till Christmas Day shows you the courage of those Canadian soldiers.” The battle began on Dec. 8, 1941, and lasted till Christmas Day, when the RECORD PHOTO BY JUSTIN LUSCHINSKI Hong Kong defenders were forced Former Selkirk Legion president Dennis Stewart, pictured left, and Selkirk Mayor Larry Johannson, right, pose to surrender. By Brian Bowman The North Winnipeg Pirates had a fl air for the dramatics in the Midget “AAA” baseball fi nal on Sunday. Trailing 2-1 in their fi nal at-bat, North Winnipeg scored a pair of runs with two outs to edge the Bonivital Black Sox 3-2 to claim the city cham- pionship. “It was a hard-fought battle,” said Pi- rates’ head coach Gary Dear. “It was a very exciting game.” Ty Smith started North Winnipeg’s rally with a walk and then was sacri- fi ced to second by Devon Cassan. After a hit batter, Wyatt Whitwell grounded out to fi rst to advance the runners. Liam Allen was intentionally walked to load the bases and then Kalli Ein- arson drew a 10-pitch walk to score a run. “That was huge,” Dear said, “because the fi rst two pitches were strikes that he fouled off.
