The Drink Tank 344 That’s a Kurt Erichsen civer! It’s been a while since we’ve had him in these pages! Also, you’ll be seeing that there Gallifreyan symbol (a ha’penny to the first person who can tell me what it means!) from the wonderful Jesi Pershing a bunch! It’s awesome, no? Plus, Teddy Harvia, and words from good folks, including Hugo-nominee (and Future Supremem Court Justice!) Steve Stiles. But mostly, this issue is about Chuck Serface’s piece leading in to our MASSIVELY AWESOME Marvel Comics edition of Nerdvana Podcast (JC Arkham and JoshBot do a GREAT job with it! You can listen to it at http://nerdvanapodcast.com/ and it’s all over the place and a lot of fun (start with the Batman episode at http:// www.nerdvanapodcast.com/Episodes/Nerdvana-S01E03a.mp3) and keep on going! I’ve got a lot of thoughts about Marvel, it’s a comic line I’ve only been into at times, but largely I’m not a fan. I love The Flash, Batman, Plastic Man, Elongated Man, Johnny Thunder, Wildcat, and especially The Justice Soci- ety. Always my favorite. Marvel had The Hulk, who was awesome at times, and Daredevil. When I was growing up, there was the X-Men, at the time the biggest thing in comics. I liked the X-Men to a degree, but always into the DC stuff far more. On the plus side, there were stories back in the day that were awesome. There was a X-Men issue where it was Kitty telling a bedtime story about Pirates! But mostly, it passed over me while I was reading about Barry Allen and Crisis On Infinite Earths.

  • Ownership Concentration in the U.S. Comic Book Industry
From McAllister, M.P., Sewell, Jr., E. H., & Gordon, I. (2001). Comics and Ideology. NY: Peter Lang. @2001 Peter Lang. Chapter 2 Ownership Concentration in the U.S. Comic Book Industry Matthew P. McAllister In the May 24, 1998 issue of The New York Times, there appeared a 3,200-word essay about the Marvel Entertainment Group, for years the dominant publisher in the comic book industry (Bryant, 1998). The illustration that accompanied the story was a drawing of two angry figures slugging it out in a fierce battle royale. However, this article did not appear in the entertainment section, the arts section, or even the book section. It appeared in the business section. The article was not about the hottest titles, characters or artists, but instead about stock values, junk bonds, and corporate assets. And the two figures pummeling each other were not fictional superheroes, but rather cari- catures of two Wall Street moguls, Ronald Perelman and Carl Icahn. In fact, the news article focused specifically on the dire nature of the comic book market and the struggle for control over Marvel, the industry leader, that took place between these two financial tycoons. This article joined a series of news reports from 1996 through 1998 that appeared in other business venues like The Wall Street Journal, The Hollywood Reporter, and The Financial Times of London. Such articles collectively presented a troubled image of the economic and industrial dynamics of the comic book industry in the late 1990s. This chapter will focus on these dynamics from the perspective of political economy, arguing that the comic book industry is characterized by increased conglomeration and ownership concentration.

American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and The New Deal A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Lawrence W. Beemer June 2011 © 2011 Lawrence W. Beemer. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and The New Deal by LAWRENCE W. BEEMER has been approved for the English Department of Ohio University and the College of Arts and Sciences by ______________________________ Robert Miklitsch Professor of English ______________________________ Benjamin M. Ogles Dean, College of Arts and Sciences 3 ABSTRACT BEEMER, LAWRENCE W., Ph.D., June 2011, English American Superhero Comics: Fractal Narrative and The New Deal (204 pp.) Director of Dissertation: Robert Miklitsch Coining the term "fractal narrative," this dissertation examines the complex storytelling structure that is particular to contemporary American superhero comics. Whereas other mediums most often require narrative to function as self-contained and linear, individual superhero comics exist within a vast and intricate continuity that is composed of an indeterminate number of intersecting threads. Identical to fractals, the complex geometry of the narrative structure found in superhero comics when taken as a whole is constructed by the perpetual iteration of a single motif that was established at the genre's point of origin in Action Comics #1. The first appearance of Superman institutes all of the features and rhetorical elements that define the genre, but it also encodes it with the specific ideology of The New Deal era. In order to examine this fractal narrative structure, this dissertation traces historical developments over the last seven decades and offers a close reading Marvel Comics' 2006 cross-over event, Civil War.
