SOK Genealogy: Lillian E. Klock (No. 350) born June 3, 1883, married Aug. 6, 1907, Gillies Dustan Hodge, born Dec. 12, 1886. Gillies Dustan Hodge, Judge of the second Judicial District of Idaho, is a direct descendent of Samuel Hodge, born Oct 4, 1686, died May 8, 1764, who married Sarah Dustion, born July 4, 1688, died _____, the daughter of Thomas Dustin and Hannah his wife, the heroine who was captured in the raid by French and Indians at Haverill, Mass, in the spring of 1697. Forced to arise from her bed, she saw her week old infant killed and its body flung to one side, and then barefooted and scantedly clad, and in a weakened condition, she was compelled to go with her captors through melting snow in their hasty retreat, accompanied by her nurse. They walked nearly a score of miles the first day, and were compelled to lie on the wet ground at night with no covering but the darkened sky overhead. This was repeated day after day until they reached an island in the Merrimac river near the present village of Penacook, N.H., where lived the leader of the savages who claimed Mrs. Dustin and her nurse as his captives. There in the wigwam of their dusky captors, they were lodged with his family, which consisted of himself, one other man, three women, seven children, and a captive English boy who had been with them for some time. Knowing that they would be taken futher North where they would be subjected to other indignities, they resolved to kill the savages and escape down the river. Then in the dim light cast by the embers of the fire, these brave women, with the aid of the English boy, slew their captors with the tomahawks that had but a short time before, reeked with the blood of their friends and loved ones. Only two, a squal and a child, escaped and fled to the woods. Scalping the slain savages they bore their trophies away as evidence of their bravery. After scuttling all the canoes but one, and with provisions from the wigwam, they fled down the river and were received by their friends at Haverhill, as persons risen from the dead, where Mrs. Dustin found her husband and children safe. It is said that soon after her return, she bore to the Governor at Boston, the guns, ten scalps, and the tomahawks and the General Court presented these brave women $250.00 each as a reward for their heroism. The island where the scene occurred is called Dustin Island, and on the citizens of Massachusetts and New Hampshire erected a monument in 1874, commemorative of the heroism of Mrs. Dustin, Mary Neff, and Samuel Leonardson, the latter the English lad. Judge Hodge has in his possession one of the scalps taken by Hannah Dustin on the above occasion. They reside at Mosco, Idaho.

7 6 5 4 3 144. ANNE ELIZA KLOCK (JAMES G. , PETER GEORGE , GEORGE I. , HANNAH ( ANNA ) NELLIS, BARVALIS 2 1 ELIZABETH KLOCK, HENDRICK ) was born December 07, 1850 in Wales, Erie County, New York. She married (1) JOHN EMERY MERRILL. He was born 1842 in Maine. She married (2) JOEL R. BENNETT December 1875. He was born January 01, 1854 in Washington, Iowa.

Notes for ANNE ELIZA KLOCK: After the disappearance of her first husband Joel Bennett, Anna married John E. Merrill.SOK Her father James Klock did not approve of Joel Bennett. Anna Elisa went by the name of Ida.

Notes for JOHN EMERY MERRILL: John Merrill was older than Ida Bennett. He served in the Union Forces during the Civil War. He was born in Maine in 1842. He was five feet, nine inches tall. In 19001901, John and Anna Elisa moved from Kansas to California.

Notes for JOEL R. BENNETT: Joel Bennett disappeared between the years 1878 and 1887. His ware abouts is unknown.SOK Email From (Scott) Benlevi Six Crows9/27/05 Greetings and thanks for emailing me back. I believe that I have the information you need to fill the voids. Ann Eliza Klock was called Ida by her parents, James G and Sallie Klock. Ida was born in 1850 and married my greatgrandfather Joel Rice Bennett on Dec.1,1875. Joel R. Bennett was born Jan 1, 1854 in Waterloo Iowa. Theirs was obviously a rocky marriage from the beginning with disapproval from her parents. He left shortly after their first child, Elsie Bennett(Hamburger) was born Dec. 12,1876. He reconciled long enough to produce their second daughter Gertrude b. April of 1879. Soon after, a divorce was obtained for Ida by her parents. Why the marriage did not succeed is mere speculation on my part but it may have been due to his philandering and mental cruelty. I do know a lot about his ancestry which is quite extensive. Both of his parents had Native American ancestry along with a pedigree going back to the 1st century C.E. in Europe. Joel R. Bennett's second wife died under mysterious circumstances and his third wife was my great grandmother Josephine Bequette who was nearly fullblooded Illiniwek (Native Am.) Their oldest daughter Hazel was my grandmother. But back to the Klock family, yes, Ida Klock married James Merril and had a son James Merril. Ida Klock(Bennett)Merril is buried at the cemetery in Chico Ca., along with her James Merril and her daughter Elsie Bennett Hamburger. I have been there and photographed the graves. Elsie Bennett Hamburger had four children by Isaac Hamburger, Lewis(19062003),Nancy(19081986),Elsie Mae(1911 2003), and Helen(19151994). Lewis and Nancy had no children. Elsie Mae had one son, Robert Kitteridge who lives in Woodland Ca, and Helen had two daughters, Kay and Kirsten Krueger, both still living in Ca. Gertrude Bennett married Charles Sowder in 1902 and they had two children, Rev. Charles Sowder and James. I have photo of James and his wife Marie. They lived in Santa Cruz Ca. I mentioned the book by Elsie Hamburger,” I Never Look Back", which was written by Lois Halliday McDonald, whom I've met and talked family with just 2 years back. There is extensive information in that book about this side of the Klock family that you would find very interesting. I bought the book on line for a couple of bucks. I highly suggest you try and get it as it contains a wealth of info on the Klock family. The book contains many photographs. I hope that I may have been helpful in filling the gaps.

Your cousin in time, space, and family, (Scott) Benlevi Six Crows, NJ
