Chapter Seven Wulfstan of Worcester: Revived by the Model With the explosion of the Becket cult from Canterbury in 1170, many other bishop- saints began to perform miracles again in order to aid the flow of pilgrims to Canterbury, and take advantage of the economic value of a new saint. Saints such as St Cuthbert, Bishop of Lindisfarne (d. 687), began performing miracles once more with renewed strength after a hiatus. Cuthbert had been ‘considered perhaps the most popular saint in England prior to the death of Thomas Becket in 1170’, 1 rivalling his cult rather than being eclipsed by it, 2 can be seen to have been working actively with Becket who sometimes even sent pilgrims to Cuthbert’s shrine for miracles. 3 Other cults emerged and re-emerged, allowing postulants who had been considered holy to prove themselves saints, such as that of William FitzHerbert, archbishop of York (d. 1154) who had performed a few miracles and was considered holy because his body had the odour of sanctity, according to his biographers writing in the 1160s; 4 however, it was not until 1177 that he began to perform miracles properly. 5 Wulfstan II, Bishop of Worcester, also soon began performing miracles alongside the other bishop-saints. Within the chronicle, allegations of Jewish ritual murder rested alongside classical sources in various languages, including Greek, Latin, Arabic, and Hebrew. Matthew Paris’s Chronica Majora and Allegations of Jewish Ritual Murder David A. Meier, Dickinson State University Allegations of Jewish ritual murder in medieval European chronicles rested alongside classical sources in various languages, including Greek, Latin, Arabic, and Hebrew. Hartmann Schedel’s Weltchronik 1493 (2001) depicted Simon of Trent’s alleged murder by the local Jewish community in 1475 in a manner that mirrored alleged Jewish ritual murders in England in 1144 and 1255.1 Between 1144 and 1493, allegations of Jewish ritual murder spread and flourished. Matthew Paris’s Chronica Majora emerged at historical crossroads where allegations of Jewish ritual murder spread beyond England and into continental Europe. Before the century finished in 1290, England had expelled its Jewish population inspiring many regions on the continent to follow suit in the coming years.2 In offering a written record, chroniclers bridged narrative history from ancient times (largely Biblical) with contemporary culture, history, society, politics and nascent legal systems, employed, in turn, by both church and state in the High Middle Ages. -

FOREWORD The selection at Eynsham (with Henry II himself presiding) of Hugh to be Bishop of Lincoln, eight hundred years ago, was nationally important. Conflict between King and Church had led, sixteen years before, to the murder of Becket by Henry's knights, in Canterbury Cathedral. As part of his penance, Henry had founded monasteries, over one of which (Witham in Somerset) he appointed Hugh, a Carthusian monk from France, to preside. It was a brilliant choice. Hugh was admired, trusted, and loved. Everyone, including Henry himself, knew that his integrity was beyond question. Hugh took steps to see that the actual election was made by the canons of Lincoln, technically their right, and an example of that sensitivity that was one of his characteristics as an administrator. -

But in Medieval Britain it, along with religion, provided a framework for the concept that we know better today as taxation. Tithes – payments of one tenth of a farmer's produce - were outlined for the Christian world in the Bible: ‘...bring all the tithes of that year’s produce and store it in your towns...’ (Deuteronomy 14:22-29). -

St Hugh of Avallon/Lincoln, (c. 1135-1200) Bishop of Lincoln Hugh of Lincoln was born in Burgundy, France, at the castle of Avallon. He joined the Augustinian canons with his widowed father, but at the age of 25 he attempted to transfer to the stricter Carthusian order. After some confusion this was accomplished. In 1180 he was assigned as prior of Witham Friary, the first Carthusian House in England. It was here that he made his annual retreat after becoming a bishop. The canons of Lincoln had not had a bishop for sixteen years until Henry II nominated Hugh, who declined until he could obtain the approval of his superior at La Grande Chartreuse. The new bishop then began a number of reforms and was also known for his personal attention to the needs of lepers and his protection of the oppressed. Bishop Hugh was present at the coronation of Richard I (the Lion‐Heart) in 1188; he later angered the king by refusing (as spokesman for the barons) to raise money for wars outside of England. Told that the King thirsted for money, Bishop Hugh said: “If he is thus thirsty, I will not be the water to quench his thirst.” He also accused Richard of infidelity to his wife and encroachment upon the Church’s rights.
