It is the only species from Zelkova genus that has been distributed and is native to Iranian forests. This tree species is one of the valuable species that is comprised of endangered plants. Nevertheless, the most of reservoirs of this species have been faced to problems that fungal disease is one of the important and lethal disturbance. This study was conducted to identify the main disturbance which has been resulted in Z. carpinifolia decadence in Daland forest reservoir, North of Iran. The study has ensured that O. novo-ulmi is the fungal pathogen in this forest reservoir. It can be reminded that this pathogen had been previously found in Ulmus genus which has been created devastating event in these noteworthy reservoirs. Some symptoms which were observed in field comprising flagging and wilting of leaves. -

Morphological Differentiation of Leaves in the Relict Tree Zelkova Carpinifolia (Ulmaceae)

The main aim of the study was the biometrical comparison of the leaf characteristics of the species sampled in three regions of Transcaucasia. We aimed to test the hypotheses that (1) leaves from vegetative (L) shoots would be larger and more variable than those from fertile (S) shoots, (2) the leaves from the same shoot type ex- press geographic patterns of morphological differentiation, similar to pattern described for genetic markers and (3) to verify the systematic position of Z. hyrcana and Z. carpinifolia subsp. yomraensis. The plant ma- terial was collected from 5 populations of Z. carpinifolia, one of Z. hyrcana and one of Z. carpinifolia subsp. yomraensis. The total 1482 leaves, 713 from L- and 769 S-type were measured using 26 characters. Our results show very high level of differences between leaves from the L- and S-type of shoots. The majority of leaf characters did not reveal dependence neither on geographic latitude, longitude and altitude nor on the basic climatic data. The results of multivariate analyses of S leaves revealed three group of populations, namely from (1) Colchis, (2) eastern Caucasus (3) Talysh. Thus, our biometric analyses revealed similar pattern to the haplotypic differentiation of Z. -

We aim to present the first biogeographic synthesis investigating the global diversity, distribution, ecological preferences, and the conservation status of Ulmaceae. Introduction The global Red Listing of tree species using the IUCN Red List categories and criteria is an important component of the Global Trees Campaign, a joint initiative of FFI and UNEP-WCMC. It ensures that there is accurate and up-to-date information on the world’s most threatened trees that can be used to plan for species and habitat conservation action. Promotion and implementation of tree red listing is the primary task of the IUCN/SSC Global Tree Specialist Group. This Group has defined priority taxonomic groups and geographical regions for tree red listing based on an analysis of current Red List information and priorities for biodiversity conservation. The Caucasus is recognised as one such global priority. A workshop was therefore organised to bring together experts knowledgeable on the flora of this global biodiversity hotspot to assess the global conservation status of tree species of the Caucasus. -

Floristic changes in the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands (south-west Europe) during the Cenozoic Jose M. Location The Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands. Methods A critical review was made of the palaeobotanical literature with the aims of detecting patterns of floristic change and extracting information on the disappearance of different taxa over the Cenozoic. These data are viewed alongside the most recent data for the climate of this period. A critical analysis is made of the role of Palaeotropical and Arctotertiary taxa in the forest communities of the Iberian Peninsula throughout the Cenozoic. Results Although the Eocene-Oligocene transition was a time when many taxa disappeared, the most outstanding events occurred between the end of the Oligocene and throughout the Miocene. Substantial floristic changes took place over this period, including the disappearance of 177 Palaeotropical taxa. This was probably related to acute cooling and aridification; no evidence exists that the Messinian Salinity Crisis had any important effect in the Iberian Peninsula. The last great disappearance of Palaeotropical taxa (36 in total) ended in the Middle- Late Piacenzian; Arctotertiary taxa were most affected during the Pleistocene. -
De Zelkova, Schijnt Geen Iep Te Zijn!
Stam van Zelkova carpinifolia Iedereen kent Zelkova a.k.a. schijniep. Al was het alleen maar omdat deze boom bromd is geworden door de verwijzing in het bekende handboek van Acer tot Zelkova. Toch wordt deze boom die heel verwarrend vaak ook Japanse iep genoemd wordt relatief weinig geplant. Huisdendroloog Jan P. zal u uitleggen waarom dat een gemiste kans is. Auteur: Jan P. Mauritz VRT Het geslacht Zelkova Binnen de systematische indeling van het Regnum Vegetabile – het Plantenrijk – behoort het geslacht Zelkova tot de orde van de Urticales – de netelachtigen – en daarbinnen tot de familie van de Ulmaceae, de iepachtigen. Andere bekende geslachten binnen deze familie zijn Celtis en Planera. Maar ook de geslachten Urtica – brandnetel – en Cannabis – nederwiet, ‘wiedewiede- wiet’ – zijn neven en nichten van de hoofd- De Zelkova, schijnt persoon in dit deel van het feuilleton. Heden ten dage is de familie volgens het geen iep te zijn! APG IV-systeem ingedeeld in de orde van de Rosales. (Zoals u al begrijpt, ben ik het volstrekt oneens met deze indeling.) Het geslacht Zelkova kent zes soorten, één hybridesoort, één var. en twaalf cv’s. Het Meer dan de moeite waard om toe te passen met natuurlijk verspreidingsgebied strekt zich uit in de gematigde klimaatzone van het zijn mooie kroonvormen en schitterend mooie noordelijk halfrond, van Zuid-Europa tot in herfstkleuren Zuidwest- en Oost-Azië. Het APG IV-systeem voor classificatie van de van de grootmeester Linnaeus (omstreeks leeftijd in onregelmatige schorsplaatjes afschil- bedektzadigen is in 2016 gepubliceerd als 1750), die zijn systeem gebaseerd heeft op met ferend, waardoor er een mooi kleurenspel ont- opvolger van APG I in 1998, APG II in 2003 en het oog zichtbare kenmerken van de species. -
