Manuscript Extensive and diverse in its attempt to include all aspects of radicalism in Canada, this collection contains material on: a) Communist Party of Canada, including rare leaflets and ephemera b) Tim Buck, A.E. Smith and other Canadian Communists c) A small number of anti-Communist documents and leaflets, as well as information on various Communist trials and the persecution of alleged Communists d) Organizations connected with radicalism and/or Communism in Canada, including briefs written by them to government agencies e) Trade unions f) Relief Camp Strike, B.C., 1935, including leaflets, bulletins and scrapbook. g) Leaflets, some issued by the Communist Party of Canada (including its May Day leaflets); others by various organizations on such topics as peace, Viet Nam, • Quebec nationalism, etc. h) Articles, including drafts of those submitted to the National Affairs Monthly, and translations and reprints chiefly from Russian publications i) Photographs, sound recordings, newspaper clippings, political posters, union medals, campaign ephemera 2. Printed Includes books, pamphlets, broadsides and periodicals reflecting radicalism throughout Canada's history including the Rebellions of 1838 and 1839, Riel Rebellion, Winnipeg General Strike of 1919, the Doukhobours, Quebec nationalism, trade unionism, etc. There are a number of books and pamphlets by Canadian Communist leaders such as Tim Buck, Leslie Morris, as well as pamphlets issued by various political groups including the Communist Party of Canada and the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation. There are complete runs of the National Affairs Monthly, the Marxist quarterly and New frontiers, as well as many broken runs and isolated issues of other left-wing periodicals. Among these are rare first issues of early Canadian communist newspapers. • ROBERT S. KENNY • MS COLLECTION 179 Biography Robert S. Kenny was born in Lindsay, Ontario of Irish descent. He attended school in Lindsay and Galt, graduated in Toronto from Riverdale Collegiate Institute. An avid book collector in many disciplines, Kenny began to collect materials on radicalism in the thirties, having joined the Communist Party of Canada. Part of his collection includes material issued by the Party. In 1977, he sold his collection on Canadian radicalism to the University of Toronto Library. The Library does not limit the duplication of material, however, the readers have not acquired any rights in regard to further duplication, circulation or publication of this material . • KENNY, (ROBERT S.) COLL. 179 • SER~ES LISTING Communist Party of Canada Boxes 1-16 This series contains a small amount of historical material, an extensive file of the Proceedings of the National Conventions beginning in 1925; briefs written by the Party to various Royal Commissions and government bodies; as well as miscellaneous files from the Party's National Office, Ontario Section, Central Committee, Metro Toronto Section and other groups in Ontario. The series also includes printed leaflets, campaign literature and ephemera. Canadian political parties. Box 17 This series contains a small amount of material on a variety of Canadian political parties including the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation, Socialist Party of Canada, Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist). (Also the Communist Party of the United States of America Box 17a) Political education material. Boxes 18-20 This series contains a substantial amount of educational material issued by the CPC including brochures, course outlines and course material. There is also ephemeral material from individual institutes and groups e.g. Marxist Institute, Young Communist League, etc. • Political candidates. Boxes 21-24 This series contains information issued by or about Canadian political candidates particularly those nominated by the Communist Party of Canada. An individual's file may contain (where available) campaign literature, political speeches, reports, ephemera, etc. Buck, Tim, 1891-1973. Boxes 25-29 Closely involved in the founding of the Communist Party of Canada, Tim Buck was elected general secretary of the CPC in 1929 and held this post until he was elected chairman in January 1962. As chairman, he was politically active until his death on March 11, 1973. This series contains biographical information about Buck including a typescript of Oscar Ryan's "Tim Buck"; correspondence; clippings and leaflets, and photostat copies of police reports relating to the arrest of Buck and other communists in 1931; a complete transcript of the Buck trial; a scrapbook of his political career as well as his campaign literature. There are articles, speeches, briefs, notes written by Buck, primarily after 1945. Smith, Albert Edward, 1871-1947 Boxes 30-40 A.E. Smith was a methodist minister whose involvement and support of the labour • struggles in Manitoba caused his dismissal from the church. He was involved in KENNY, (ROBERT S.) MS. COLL. 179 • the' Winnipeg General Strike of 1919 and shortly thereafter was elected to the Manitoba Legislature. He was one of the founding members of the Canadian Labor Party. In 1923, Smith came to Toronto and for two years was active in the People's Church and the Labor Forum. In 1925 he applied for membership in the Communist Party of Canada. In that same year, he along with others, founded the Canadian Labor Defense League and was its general secretary until 1940 when the Canadian government forced it to suspend operation. This series contains a substantial file of Smith papers dating from 1899 until his death. There is autobiographical and biographical material, scrapbooks, notebooks and correspondence. There are manuscript and typescript drafts of his newspaper column "The years march on", as well as the printed columns as they appeared in the Canadian Tribune. There are miscellaneous writings by Smith including speeches, lectures, funeral orations, poems, etc. Also included in the series is a box of Canadian Labor Defense League documents and a box of documents concerning numerous organizations to which Smith belonged or took an interest in. Canadian communists. Boxes 41-42 This series contains information on or by a small number of well-known communists e.g. Stewart Smith (son of A.E. Smith), Becky Buhay, etc., as well as information on lesser known communists. Individual files vary in size but contain (if available) articles written by or about the person, correspondence, campaign literature, ephemera, etc. Also, Janet (Murray) Kenny, personal photos and drawings. • Anti-Communist material. Box 43 This series contains leaflets and miscellaneous items on communist trials such as the Fred Rose trial, the Rosenberg case, etc. There is also a small amount of information on the internment of communists in 1941. There is information on Herbert Norman and Beatrice Fernihough who were alleged communists. Organizations connected to radicalism and/or communism in Canada. Boxes 44-45 This series contains typescripts of the Minutes of the Toronto Trades Assembly and Minutes of the Trades and Labor Council. There is information on other groups such as the Young Communist League, the Congress of Canadian Women, etc. Trade Unions. Boxes 46-49 This series contains union agreements and constitutions, information about or by specific unions such as One Big Union (OBU) and the Toronto Typographical Union. Relief Camp Strike, B.C., 1935. Box 50 and Item 51 This series contains contemporary source material on the strike including leaflets, bulletins and a scrapbook of newspaper clippings. • Briefs. CaLL. 179 • Th~s series contains briefs written by various organizations such as the Canadian Textile Councils, Progress Books, etc. Usually these briefs were submitted to some government body. Leaflets and miscellaneous material. Boxes 53-57 This series contains leaflets on a wide range of topics including peace, Viet Nam and the Viet Nam War, Jews, women, labour, etc. Articles, poems, plays translations, etc. Boxes 58-60 This series contains original articles or literary works and translations of foreign, primarily Russian publications. Miscellaneous bibliographical material. Box 61 This series contains dealers catalogues, blurbs, booklists and bibliographies as well as information on specific publications such as National Affairs Monthly. Souvenir programmes, brochures. Box 62 This series contains ephemeral material which indicate the types of cultural programmes offered by radical or political bodies. 4It Songbooks, songsheets. Box 62 A Contains songbooks and sheets issued by various political groups. Photographs. Boxes 63 A, 63 B, 63 C, 64.
