INTRODUCTION Why do rich people seeking reductions in their tax burdens, who have the ability to influence Congress directly through lobbying and campaign contributions, sometimes resort to grassroots populist methods? And why do non-rich people sometimes join the rich in their anti-tax movements? These are the puzzles Isaac William Martin sets out to solve in Rich People’s Movements.1 Martin’s historical research—much of it based on original sources to which scholars have previously paid little or no attention—reveals that, far from being a recent innovation, populist-style movements against progressive federal taxation go back nearly a century, to the 1920s. Although Martin identifies various anti-tax movements throughout the past century, he strikingly concludes that there has been “substantial continuity from one campaign to the next, so that, in some * Pamela B. Undergraduate Journal of Psychology 22 Libertarianism, Culture, and Personal Predispositions Ida Hepsø, Scarlet Hernandez, Shir Offsey, & Katherine White Kennesaw State University Abstract The United States has exhibited two potentially connected trends – increasing individualism and increasing interest in libertarian ideology. Previous research on libertarian ideology found higher levels of individualism among libertarians, and cross-cultural research has tied greater individualism to making dispositional attributions and lower altruistic tendencies. Given this, we expected to observe positive correlations between the following variables in the present research: individualism and endorsement of libertarianism, individualism and dispositional attributions, and endorsement of libertarianism and dispositional attributions. We also expected to observe negative correlations between libertarianism and altruism, dispositional attributions and altruism, and individualism and altruism. Survey results from 252 participants confirmed a positive correlation between individualism and libertarianism, a marginally significant positive correlation between libertarianism and dispositional attributions, and a negative correlation between individualism and altruism. These results confirm the connection between libertarianism and individualism observed in previous research and present several intriguing questions for future research on libertarian ideology. A Secular Contract,A Sacred Calling Jacques Maritain and John Dewey on Education:A Reconsideration 247 by Gerald L. Gutek acques Maritain and John Dewey were two of the towering figures in philosophy of education. Maritain led an international revival of JAristotelian and Thomist philosophies known as Integral Humanism. Dewey,a founding figure of Pragmatism,exercised a significant influence on American education. Originating in very different philosophical set- tings, their ideas on education tend to represent polar opposites. An analysis of the divergent insights on education presented by Maritain and Dewey can help educators step back and reflect on their work. These two thinkers’ voices have a relevance that continues to speak to us about the problems of education. Philosophical and Theoretical Orientation To discuss Maritain and Dewey on education,we consider the origin of their ideas in different philosophical and theoretical contexts. Maritain’s concepts of universal truth and purposeful human life origi- nate in the Aristotelian and Thomist traditions, especially their meta- physics. Maritain espouses Aristotle’s metaphysics, which sees objective reality as operating according to universal natural laws. He endorses Aristotle’s epistemology that human beings have the potentiality to acquire knowledge about this reality by forming concepts through a twofold process of sensation and abstraction. Aristotle’s view of knowl- edge and knowing differs from Plato’s theory of reminiscence, in which ideas existing latently in the mind are brought to consciousness. True to his Aristotelian origin, Maritain consistently argues that human beings’ powers of intellect endow them with the potential of rationality. Although Maritain’s philosophy of education rests on Aristotle’s meta- physics, Dewey rejects metaphysics as purely speculative and empirical- ly unverifiable. -

Co-operatives Unleashed from the grassroots July 2020 About CCIN and the Policy Labs The Co-operative Councils’ Innovation Network (CCIN) is a non-party political active hub, founded in 2012 to achieve co-operative policy development, innovation and advocacy which is: Action-focused: a vehicle for helping councils translate co-operative policy and principles into practice. Membership-based: funded by modest membership subscriptions from its member councils. Open to all UK councils: members share the belief that working co-operatively with communities holds the key to tackling today’s challenges. Part of the local government family: the network is a Special Interest Group registered with the Local Government Association (LGA) where we work to promote innovation in local government. Established in 2016, the Policy Lab programme is an opportunity for any CCIN Member to present an idea and receive funding for collaboration with other CCIN members to fund co-operative solutions to the challenges facing local government. Up from Individualism Don Herzogt I was sitting, ruefully contemplating the dilemmas of being a com- mentator, wondering whether I had the effrontery to rise and offer a dreadful confession: the first time I encountered the counter- majoritarian difficulty, I didn't bite. I didn't say, "Wow, that's a giant problem." I didn't immediately start casting about for ingenious ways to solve or dissolve it. I just shrugged. Now I don't think that's because my commitments to either democracy or constitutionalism are somehow faulty or suspect. Nor do I think it's that they obviously cohere. It's rather that the framing, "look, these nine unelected characters can strike down a statute passed in procedurally valid ways by a democratically elected legislature," struck me as unhelpful. -

Please direct correspondence to: Deborah Prentice Department of Psychology Princeton University Green Hall Princeton, NJ 08540 [email protected] 1 Promoting human rights means changing behavior: Changing the behavior of governments that mistreat suspected criminals, opponents of their policies, supporters of their political rivals, and members of particular gender, ethnic, or religious groups; changing the behavior of corporations that mistreat their workers, damage the environment, and produce unsafe products; and changing the behavior of citizens who mistreat their spouses, children, and neighbors. In this chapter, I consider what an understanding of how social norms function psychologically has to contribute to this very worthy project. Social norms have proven to be an effective mechanism for changing health-related and environmental behaviors, so there is good reason to think that they might be helpful in the human-rights domain as well. In the social sciences, social norms are defined as socially shared and enforced attitudes specifying what to do and what not to do in a given situation (see Elster, 1990; Sunstein, 1997). -

RESEARCH PAPERS FACTORS AFFECTING PARTICIPATION OF PRESERVICE TEACHERS IN E-DEMOCRACY By SERKAN ŞENDAĞ * SACIP TOKER ** * Associate Professor, Computer Education and Instructional Technology, School of Education, Mersin University, Mersin, Turkey. ** Ph.D holder, Instructional Technology, Department of Administrative and Organizational Studies, College of Education, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan, USA. ABSTRACT This study aimed to reveal the factors associated with the participation of preservice teachers in e-democracy. It was designed as a correlational study and 1,519 preservice teachers from a teacher preparation program in Turkey participated in it by completing a 54-item questionnaire. As a result, three major factors for involvement in e-democracy emerged: knowledge and environment, ethics, and anxiety. In addition, two types of participation were revealed: anonymous and onymous. The results of the study showed that anonymous participation correlates positively with Political Knowledge, and negatively with Current State of Politics and Digital Integrity. Those who have mobile technologies with internet connection are more likely to participate anonymously in e-democracy. On the other hand, Onymous participation, correlates positively with Fear of Self-expression, and negatively with Political Knowledge and Digital Citizenship. Males were shown to be more prone to both types of participation than females. Internet usage frequency was a common variable triggering both types of participation.
