Afterschool Programs Key to Developing Youth Cumberland County has the highest percentage of births to females aged 10 to 19 in the state. Supervised afterschool time is a key to combating that statistic and oth- ers that reflect poorly upon our area. The YMCA of Vineland is dedicated to offering afterschool programming that supports key social-emotional, cognitive, and physical development to improve the quality of life of young people. Registration is going on now through the school year. The YMCA’s afterschool programs offer activities in a caring and safe environment. These are located at all of Vineland’s ele- mentary schools, two middle schools, and at the YMCA. In the Vineland YMCA’s afterschool program, children receive homework help, physical activity through the Horizon Healthy U and Reebok pro- grams, arts and crafts, and STEM activi- ties. Financial assistance is available to those in need. For more information about the YMCA’s afterschool program, contact 856-691-0030 or visit www.ccaymca.org .

The next stop was to Big Sky Aviation where Flight Instructor, Kevin Bertonazzi, taught campers about the aerodynamics of flight and what makes a plane fly. Our friends from the Cooper Hospital Medical Helicopter also discussed their jobs in aviation—and children viewed the helicopter's high tech capacities to take care of critical care patients while in flight! Next, students took a quick simulator ride over Union Lake and Millville with Ellison staff member, Ms. Brown at the controls of our flight simulator. She safely landed the simulator back at Millville Airport to the cheers and delight of her virtual passengers. As a final activity, students came back to Big Sky's training classroom to con- struct their own balsa wood airplanes - utilizing the features and skills of aerody- namics they learned. We all went outside and had a contest to see whose plane flew the furthest. Thanks to Big Sky Aviation's Beth Smithson, the Millville Museum and Cooper Medical Chopper crew for being part of the Ellison School's new STEM initiative.

The GVCC was proud to partner and participate in two Vineland community events in August:

• For Vineland’s Jersey Fresh Festival, we served on the event committee and assisted with the day’s activities. Our GVCC president, Victor LaTorre, participated as a vendor.
