Our ensemble uses a set of baroque bows patterned after existing historic examples BYU – IDAHO DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC PRESENTS from the early 18th century. These bows are lighter, shorter, and have a slight outward curve resulting in characteristic baroque articulation -- a strong, quick down bow and a light, softer up bow, meant to emphasize the inequalities of strong and weak beats. Basso continuo refers to the preferred harmonic accompaniment used during the baroque era. From a printed bass line with a few harmonic clues indicated as numerical “figures,” musicians improvised chordal accompaniments which best fit the unique qualities of their instruments and supported the upper solo lines -- similar to the way a modern jazz rhythm section will “comp” behind a vocal or saxophone solo. This single bass line might include a colorful variety of both melodic and chord playing instruments. Tonight’s basso continuo section includes: • Harpsichord, featuring plucked brass strings across a light wood frame, resulting in a delicate, transparent tone which contrasts with the strong iron frame and hammered tone of the modern piano • Baroque style organ, using a mechanical “tracker” mechanism instead of electronics to route air to each pipe This evening’s performance features suites, sinfonia and concerti by prominent composers from the 17th and early 18th century: § The prolific Antonio Vivaldi is known for his development of three- movement concerto form. An extravagant violinist, he carried the nickname “il prete roso” (the red priest) because of his red hair. § Johann Heinrich Schmelzer was recognized in his day as Vienna's foremost violin virtuoso and a leading composer. -

Vol. 2 English music from the Golden Age Second Edition Settings for lute and treble instrument by Joaquim Bogunyà Chesa Introduction to the second edition Here you will find a compilation of pieces of some of the best English music from the 16 th and 17 th centuries especially arranged for the recorder flute or any other treble instrument and the lute or the vihuela. The settings have been made according to the same criteria as in Vol 1. I am copying them out here below. In my honest opinion, the ideal setting or transcription is that which fits best the language of the instrument on which the music is to be played. This implies the idea that the best transcription is not necessarily that which includes every single note from the original piece at the same pitch, full stop. Consequently, the settings that you will find in this book are intended to be a faithful transcription of the ‘spirit’ of the music, and not necessarily of the ‘body’ or mere musical appearance. This has been made in order to serve the main purpose of this book; that is, to arrange a repertoire of pieces of wonderful early music in a way that they can be played in a most satisfying manner on the recorder and the lute. In this book you will find different types of transcriptions. Some which are hundred percent true, or at least ninety-nine percent, to the original source – most of the recorder parts are-, and others where some ornamentation (according to the common 16 th century taste) has been included. -

ARTYKUŁY agnieszka leszczyńska uniwersytet warszawski ———— EMANUEL WURSTISEN, HIS TABLATURE AND LINKS TO POLAND LUTE MUSIC WITH MEDICINE IN THE BACKGROUND he lute tablature CH-Bu F IX 70, known as the Emanuel Wurstisen Lute T Book, has been kept at Basel University Library (Öffentliche Bibliothek der Universität Basel) since the early nineteenth century, but only became familiar to musicians and musicologists a little more than three decades ago, thanks to John Kmetz’s catalogue.1 A slightly modified and supplemented description of the tab- lature’s contents was soon presented by Christian Meyer.2 In 2012 Andreas Schlegel created a catalogue compiling data from both Kmetz and Meyer, and made it avail- able online, along with black and white reproductions of the manuscript, in eight volumes corresponding to the internal divisions found in the tablature.3 Later the entire digitalised source was made available online by Basel University Library.4 The repertoire contained in the tablature gradually attracted the interest of a growing number of musicologists and lutenists.5 One of the researchers who began to explore 1 John Kmetz, Die Handschriften der Universitätsbibliothek Basel: Katalog der Musikhandschriften des 16. ACET Junior Academies’ Scheme of Work for music Year 5 Unit 1.1: A Musical Masque About this unit: This unit of work is linked to the History scheme of work HT 1.1 Post 1066 Study: The Tudors. It is a starting point for exploration into Tudor music. In it children will begin to learn about Tudor Dance music, in particular the Pavan as a popular Tudor dance. Children will identify its characteristic musical features and rhythms before attempting to dance the Pavan and performing their own Pavan melody over a drone accompaniment. Children will then move on to learn about traditional Tudor musical instruments before exploring Tudor songs and madrigal-style songs with a ‘fa, la, la, la’ refrain. Where they will compose their own lyrics to a madrigal melody. Fanfares are explored briefly before children work towards putting on a Tudor style banquet/concert combining elements of all the musical learning in to a class performance. This is a record from the Golden Age in England, the age of Shakespeare. Most things in England seem to have flourished for some decades about 1600 ; even music. This was the age of the lutenists and the virginalists. Madrigals were sung around a ci.rculu table at home and majestic music accompanied the sewices in the great cathedrals. It was at this time l}]'at the ayre, the solo song with lute accompmiment, was at its peak. Numerous composers sought the ideal maniage of word and music' Richard Barnfield brought together two of the period's greatest nmes, the poet Edmund Spenser and the musician John Dowland in a sonet : (see text I) The first printed volume of solo songs appeaed in 1597 : (see text II) The universities were, of course. Oxford and Cambridge. The particular "notation" used by lute players is known as tablature. The coliection was pdnted in such a manner that the songs could be performed by a single voice with lute accompaniment or as four-part songs, The latter could be achieved by sitting in a circle round the music wtrich is arranged on the page with one part at each point of the compas.
