    OHIO ALL-BIRD CONSERVATION PLAN OCTOBER 2010 1 This Ohio Bird Conservation Initiative All-Bird Conservation Plan is based on several regional conservation plans developed by the Upper Mississippi River and Great Lakes Region Joint Venture (UMRGLRJV). These include conservation plans for shorebirds (Potter et al. 2007a), landbirds (Potter et al. 2007b), waterbirds (Soulliere et al. 2007a), and waterfowl (Soulliere et al. 2007b). Habitat and bird population objectives from these plans and the UMRGLRJV Implementation Plan (Soulliere et al. 2007c) have been “stepped-down” to the state of Ohio and the primary bird conservation regions that occur within Ohio. Additional maps were incorporated from Soulliere et al. (2007c) with the generous assistance from Brad Potter of the UMRGLRJV. The OBCI Plan benefitted from reviews provided by Mike Reynolds, David Scott, Mark Shieldcastle, and Nathan Stricker. It can invade and expand dramatically when forests are disturbed. Anecdotal evidence suggests that fire might facilitate its spread, but the relationship between fire and this prolific invasive tree is poorly understood. To better understand the impacts of fire on Ailanthus we conducted studies at Tar Hollow State Forest in southeastern Ohio, where Ailanthus is widely distributed within the forest and where prescribed fire has recently been applied to 2,300 acres within a 9,600 acre portion of the forest. Our first objective was to gain a better understanding of how the distribution and abundance of Ailanthus is related to recent fires, harvesting activity, seed sources, and other landscape and stand characteristics.

  • Ohio's National Priorities
    NATIONAL PRIORITIES SECTION STATE OF OHIO 2015 The 2008 Farm Bill, under Title VIII – Forestry, amends the Cooperative Forestry Assistance Act of 1978, to include the requirement that each state develop a long-term, state-wide assessment and strategies for forest resources. These assessments and strategies focused on three national priorities: 1. Conserve and Manage Working Forest Landscapes for Multiple Values and Uses 2. Protect Forests from Threats 3. Enhance Public Benefits from Trees and Forests These documents were developed with a comprehensive team of stakeholders to address cross- boundary, landscape scale actions that would be the most efficient activities to address issues of concern developed for the assessment phase of the Forest Action plan. The Ohio Statewide Forest Resource Strategy lays out the key issues facing Ohio’s forests. Each issue is then addressed with Statewide Objectives and Strategies. Matrices are included in Statewide Forest Resource Strategy showing which of the three National Priorities and Objectives are addressed by each Statewide Strategy. Work accomplished on these Statewide Strategies is highlighted in the following section. Table 1. National Priorities and Objectives. National Priorities National Objectives 1.
