WILLIE BUCHANAN

A native of Shelbyville, TN, where he was born in 1945, Willie Buchanan has demonstrated a dedication and commitment to wheelchair basketball second to none. Beginning in 1974 when he was introduced to the sport as 8 member of the Music City Wheelers, he has consistently played and practised with the team despite the necessary 120 miles round trip to Nashville over a 20-year period.

From the outset, Buchanan made 8 solid and positive impact on the Music City team.. Because of his height and maneuverability, he forced the opposition to play him differently than other players of similar height and talent. His particular forte was his rebounding ability both on offense and defen~. Recognized as unselfish. highly motivated and very competitive, he led the team to 13 Final Four tournaments. With Buchanan in the lineup, Music City came through as national champions on two occasions. 1978 and 1989. 2nd in 1976, 1984, 1988, 1991 and 1994, and Jrd in 1979 and 1980.

An above-knee amputee from cancer in 1969, Buchanan was elected to First Team All-national Touarnament in 1977, 1978, 1980, and Second Team in 1983, 1988 and 1989.

An added honor was his selection to the U.S. team that won the gold medal in the Pan American Wheelchair Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1982.

He continues to live in Shelbyville where he is -a machine operator in a tannery factory .

SHARON RAHN HEDRICK

Sharon Rahn Hedrick first appeared on the wheelchair sports scene as a swimming and racing champion in her hometown of Philadelphia, PA, in the early 1970s. She was disabled with a spinal cord injury in 1966 at age 10.

In 1976, she enrolled at the University of Illinois, where she quickly distinguished herself in basketball as well as in swimming and racing. Only a year later she was selected to the All-National Tournament team. in the 3rd NWWBT played in Champaign, IL. In 1978 and again in the years from 1980 to 1983, 1985 and 1987, she was elected as MVP in the annual NWWBT. Her team won national championships in 1978, 1983, 1986, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994. She was elected to First Team All-National Tournament 15 times from 1977 to 1983 and from 1985 to 1992. She appeared in 13 NWWBT championship games. Her extensive international experience includes 3 Paralympic Games appearances in 1980 (bronze), 1988 (gold) and 1992 (silver), and 2 Pan American Games competitions in 1978 and 1982 (gold).

She has served as a member of the NWBA Rules Committee since 1980 and currently serves as the Chairperson of the Women's Division.

As a wheelchair racer. she was unequalled in her class. She entered and won. the Boston marathon in the first race opened to women in 1977. In 1984 and again in 1988, she won the 800 meter demonstration event held during the in Los Angeles and Seoul. Korea, respectively. Her awards are numerous. having gained the respect of the entire sports world for her many outstanding performances. She was inducted into the National Wheelchair Athletic Association (now Wheelchair Sports USA) Hall of Fame in 1992.

She earned her Bachelor's and Master's degress from the University of Illinos at Urbana-Champaign in Health Education. and is employed as a registered dietician. She and her husband Brad live in Urbana.

PAT KILLEEN

(1940-1993)

Pat Killeen began his 3S-year long career in wheelchair basketball as a 17-year-old student at the Bulova School of Watchmaking in Woodside, NY in 1957. After a two-year stint with the Watchmakers, he spent a Se&8on playing with the Brooklyn Whirlaways. From there, and upon graduation, he IDOved to Richmond, Virginia to begin work, raise a family, and play with the Richmond Chairoteers which soon became a strong force on the national scene.

He was a member of 10 Richmond teams that qualified to play in the national tournament from 1960 to 1978. He distinguisbed himself by being selected to First Team all-America In 1960, 1965 and 1971; 2nd Team In 1966 and 1967 and 3rd Team in 1963. He was the winner of the Captain James S. Ure Award for Sportsmanship at the 23rd NWBT in 1971. He was honored many times over in the Mid-Atlantic and Capital Conferences by selection as Most Valuable Player (1967, 1970 and 1971) and nomination to All-Conference teams over the years.

His interest in developing the sport was evident in the role he played as a conference officer, serving as a founder and then for six years as the President of the Capital Conference. He coached the Richmond team for six years. A Class Il, he was disabled at birth.

Kileen died on October 24. 1993 after returning home from a tournament game played in Virginia Beach. Death was attributed to a heart attack. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, and two sons, Raymond and Seen, all of Richmond. RICHARD MADURO

Richard Madura b9came a T-10 paraplegic as the result of a motorcycle accident at the age of 18 in 1943. The accident cut short a promising career following his outstanding performances as an athlete in basketball, football and swimming while a student at Springfield Tech H.S. in Springfield, MA.

His interest in and participation in wheelchair basketball began in the late '50s as a member of the Florida Wheels of the Southern Conference. Competing in the 12th NWBT in 1960, Madura was elected to Third Team All-America as his team finished third in the nation. In that same year. he was the guiding force behind the organization of the st. Petersburg Suncoasters of the Southern Conference, and was a member of the U.S. wheelchair basketball team that won the gold medal in the 1st Paralympic Games held in Rome, Italy. To add to his honors. he was elected President of the Southern Conference. Two years later he was elected President of the NWBA. He served as Vice President from 1968 through 1971.

In 1964, Maduro was awarded the Captain James S. Ure Award for Sportsmanship in the 16th NWBT. He was selected to the U. S. team competing in the II Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Japan where it captured the gold medal. In 1965, he was invited to return to Japan for a two-year stay to assist in the development of wheelchair sports in the country under the auspices of the Tupperware Corporation. Upon retul."Iling to the United States in 1967, he was instrumental in organizing the North Florida Renegades in Gainesville. He served as Assistant Commissioner of the Florida Conference from 1973 to 1978 .

In 1993, the NWAA recogniz.ed Maduro's accomplishments and contributions to wheelchair sports by inducting him into its Hall of Fame.

He and his wife, Anne, reside in Gainesville where they have established a mail order business in gardening supplies.
