And so it was for Sara J. Bloomfield. Sara well understands the institution’s solemn m o c . e mission as a living memorial. She knows the critical g d e r l a s role it plays in fighting antisemitism, preventing a m o h t y genocide and developing moral leadership. And b o t o h she has recognized the urgent need for effective, P innovative programs in Holocaust education, Sara J. Bloomfield, Museum Director scholarship and documentation.     Holocaust Museums Issue Joint Statement on Antisemitic Vandalism in Florida June 3, 2021 We unequivocally condemn the cowardly and despicable act of vandalism at The Florida Holocaust Museum on May 27. The abhorrent graffiti and hateful rhetoric that defaced the museum is an act of antisemitism, hatred and violence targeting Jews. We will not be intimidated or waver in the mission of each of our organizations to educate on the dangers of unchecked hate. Holocaust education increases empathy, improves open-mindedness to differing viewpoints, and creates a greater sense of social responsibility and willingness to stand up to negative stereotyping and discrimination. The lessons of the Holocaust remain relevant today because Nazi Germany’s ultimate hatred shows how far human beings are willing to go to destroy those who are different from themselves. We need to understand what happens when hatred and prejudice is not stopped. Hundreds of thousands of people visit our museums each year. The most important lesson we teach about the Holocaust is that history is made through a series of choices and that every choice has a consequence. Choices by individuals have power. At a time when hate crimes and antisemitism are on the rise, we fervently encourage everyone to denounce antisemitic and all hate speech, hate groups, and acts of violence. For more information, please contact [email protected] Abstract The dominant trend in the current scholarship on artifact-based Holocaust museums, as evidenced by the positions held by James Young in The Texture of Memory and Oren Stier in Committed to Memory, claims all artifacts associated with the Holocaust should be viewed with the same suspicion, for these artifacts are understood only in terms of death, and not of life. In this thesis, I argue that the Florida Holocaust Museum, in its staging of artifacts, counters this claim, in large part, due to a section of the permanent collection dedicated to Jewish life before World War II. I describe what I call "distancing mechanisms", which are tools that prevent the visitor from creating false memory experiences. The Florida Holocaust Museum uses distancing mechanisms to distance the viewer from the thickness of history without producing unmediated forms of memory that lead visitors to overly identify with Holocaust victims. Finally, I call attention to the importance of mundane artifacts, which, when effectively presented, create a relationship between the visitors and the past that emphasizes that these events happened to other people, without using the past to assault the visitor. The IHRA (formerly the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, or ITF) was initiated in 1998 by former Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson. Persson decided to establish an international organisation that would expand Holocaust education worldwide, and asked former president Bill Clinton and former British prime minister Tony Blair to join him in this effort. Persson also developed the idea of an international forum of governments interested in discussing Holocaust education, which took place in Stockholm between 27-29 January 2000. The Forum was attended by the representatives of 46 governments including; 23 Heads of State or Prime Ministers and 14 Deputy Prime Ministers or Ministers. The Declaration of the Stockholm International Forum on the Holocaust was the out- come of the Forum’s deliberations and is the foundation of the IHRA. The IHRA currently has 31 Member Countries, 10 Observer Countries and seven Permanent International Partners.

In 1942, when the Jews of her Polish village were ordered by the Nazis to report to a nearby train station, 15-year-old Esther Nisenthal fled, with her parents’ blessing and her 13-year-old sister Mania in tow. Hiding with non-Jewish friends, then in the forest, Esther and Mania ultimately created new identities, posing as Polish Catholic farm girls, hiding in plain sight of the Gestapo. In 1977, at the age of 50, Esther Nisenthal Krinitz began creating works of fabric art to tell her story of survival. Trained as a seamstress, but with no training in art, she ultimately created 36 remarkable fabric pictures of strong, vivid images and folk-art realism, meticulously stitching the narrative of her story beneath each picture.     An Introduction to the Holocaust Six Million Murders “There were not six million Jews murdered; there was one murder, six million times” Abel Herzberg Six Million Murders is intended to help introduce you to the one of the darkest periods in human history: the Holocaust of the Jews and their nearly complete annihilation from Europe during World War II. It took only 8 years, from 1938 until 1945, to murder 6 million Jews. Yet each murder was that of an individual, a person who was a child, a father or mother, brother or sister. We will never know the fear and terror that each victim felt as they faced death. Sadly the racial theories of the Nazi regime was not applied only to Jews, but they were expanded to justify the destruction of Roma, Sinta, Slavs, homosexuals, political opponents, and even Germans who were mentally ill or not born in perfect physical condition that would meet the standards of the Aryan race. The goal of Six Million Murders is to stimulate further research into the Holocaust on the part of readers. Hopefully students will undertake more extensive research into the Holocaust.
