A young boy with his dog, fell through the ice at Sutcliffe Park Pond. Together Emma, Marcus & Ben came to the boys aid, saving him and his dog, both made a complete recovery. The Borough Commander of the Metropolitan Police says

“I see and hear of acts of courage and bravery by my officers every day. In these circumstances though, there was no victim to defend from a relentless attacker, nor some lengthy chase after a suspect who had just broken into a house. The bravery shown by these Police Officers goes to the core of distinguishing why the public are the police and the police are the public. An off duty officer and on duty officers all trying to do the very thing that makes ordinary people so extraordinary. The risk taken was significant and yet those risks were calculated and enabled the officers to save the life of a drowning child. Putting others first is the hallmark of a caring and developed society. Putting others first at great risk to oneself by my officers, is the hallmark of a police service which tries its very best.

The risk taken was

12

significant and yet those risks were calculated and enabled the officers to save the life of a drowning child. Putting others first is the hallmark of a caring and developed society. From: Sent: 20 March 2017 16:23 To: mayor Cc: Subject: Courtesy Call and Request for an Invitation Card for Thursday's Event as discussed.

The Worshipful Mayor of Royal London Borough of Greenwich, Mr. Olu Babalola,

This is , the CEO of Rainbow Nursery UK Ltd, one of the residents of our Great Royal London Borough of Greenwich.

I first met with you at New Wine Church in Greenwich and we met again at Commonwealth Africa Summit 2017 as one of the entourages of His Imperial Majesty, Ooni Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi last week.

After my brief introduction, you invited me to join you for an event that Kabiyesi will be attending at the Town Hall this coming Thursday; after which Councillor Sonia Ashikodi was asked to take us the attached photograph at the Summit.

I would like your office to send me an invite for the event as I may not be able to join Kabiyesi's convoy that day for two reasons. I have a brief meeting between 8-9 am and the Town Hall at Wellington street is closer to me at Samuel street, SE18 than travelling to Intercontinental Hotel at 02 to join Kabiyesi's convoy as usual, in order to travel back to Wellington street which is a stone throw from my house.

A lady called from your office to say that she had email an invite to me, but unfortunately, nothing was received through my two email below.

It would be very much appreciated if she could please send the invite again as I will be delighted and honoured to grace such an occasion with my two highly respected Yoruba fathers in the land.

Looking forward to hearing from you sir.

Hi both,

I have already made this live in the original form. I didn’t see the emails until too late and didn’t realise there would be any edits from our side.

1 It is up as a record of the Mayor’s engagements throughout December with a final wish for a happy new year.

I think it is always backward looking as it is a diary of sorts - if we put it up as the January blog, then we will be missing out December. Can go back through and make the changes, but would like to leave it as the December blog for continuity’s sake.

Thanks, Jane

Dear all

I've made a few amends just as a simple edit while keeping content largely the same - and have also made it into a 'New Year' blog rather than December 2016 as December is nearly over now.

I copy the revised version below and also attach it.

Mayor’s Blog – Jan 2017

2 Hello and let me start by wishing you a very Happy New Year. I do hope that 2017 brings you health and happiness. I hope that you and your family had a wonderful Christmas!! The weeks leading up to Christmas were very busy and I thank you for all your wonderful invitations. It was wonderful to go to so many places meeting so many people, including carol concerts, Christmas lunches, a store opening, award ceremonies, visiting care homes and switching on Christmas Lights, right across the Borough. I attended a Christmas Lunch at Sam Manners House Sheltered Home on 5 December. This was provided by Tesco who wanted to hos t Christmas lunches for elderly residents in the Borough. It was great to have a chat with residents and see what they were doing for Christmas. In the same week I was pleased to attend the store launch of Marks and Spencer, who have made a return to Woolwich. The new Foodhall is situated in Cadet House on Plumstead Road. The store has created forty jobs, many filled by staff from the previous Woolwich store. Carol Concerts The Mayoress and I had the opportunity to attend Carol Concerts organised by Save the Children Fund and Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice. These were both held at the Chapel in the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich and were fundraising events for both these much deserving charities. Another Carol Concert was organised by the Redeemed Christian Church of God Rivers of Living Waters. This was held at Thamesmere Leisure Centre, Thamesmead and was held for the elderly in the area.

The Mayoress and I also held the Annual Carol Concert at Woolwich Town Hall on 16 December in aid of the Mayor’s Charity Appeal. Our thanks to Bannockburn Primary School Choir, Greenwich Youth Band and New Wine Church for performing on the night. Bannockburn Primary School Choir came to visit me at the Town Hall and I was able to thank them personally during their visit to the Mayor’s Parlour. Other events I very much enjoyed the Greenwich Irish Pensioners Association Annual Christmas Get Together. This was a great event where everyone is made to feel most welcome. Another special event I attended was the Tree of Hope at Queen Elizabeth Hospital organised by the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Members of the public and staff wrote messages of hope/remembrance and tied these to the Christmas tree. My message was “Christmas is a time to give and that I wished that everyday could be Christmas” In between all the Christmas events, I attended the Goldsmith University of London Graduation Ceremonies. Many congratulations to all the students on their successful completion of their studies.

3 Also, a local group called Listening Ears celebrated their 10 th anniversary as a charity, held at Clockhouse Community Centre, Woolwich. Listening Ears provides support services for members of the local community. Care Homes I had the pleasure to meet residents, their relatives and staff in Care Homes, leading up to Christmas including Time Court in Charlton and Gallions View in Thamesmead. I hope to visit other Care Homes in the New Year, as I could not fit all visits in before Christmas. My thanks to all the staff who do such a great job.

Hamper distributions I was delighted to attend the Christmas Hamper distribution organised by the New Wine Church. Use photo attached Since the campaign’s start in 2002, New Wine Church has given out over 26,000 free hampers. My final Christmas event was organised by Mount Zion Christian Ministries International based in Plumstead, who also organised Christmas Hampers distribution and I really enjoyed a show put on by the children of the Church. Happy New Year! The Mayoress and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy and prosperous New Year. Every New Year gives the perfect chance for something new and fresh. Good luck, good health and good fortune in 2017!! Help support the Mayor's charities

I would like to round up my blog with a mention of my charities for the Mayoral year. I have decided to support AFRUCA - Africans Unite Against Child Abuse, and The Archway Project in Thamesmead.

AFRUCA

AFRUCA was established in May 2001, as a platform advocating for the rights and welfare of African children. It developed in response to the problems African children and parents face, and the gaps that exist within the child protection system for African children in the UK. The main focus is prevention and early intervention. They promote the best interest of the child in all their activities with the stance that culture and religion should never be a reason to abuse children. A perfect example is in the area of FGM (Female Genital Mutilation).

Part of the funds will be spent to improve community cohesion, by running local projects for children and families, for example, champions projects in schools.

The Archway Project

4 My second charity, The Archw ay Project in Thamesmead, was established in 1982. It works to enrich the lives of young people living in London. It provides a range of educational and recreational activities, working closely in partnership with schools, colleges, local authorities and the Police to improve the lives of their members.

Most of the work is based around repairing, recycling and maintaining motorbikes, which members can then go on to drive. They learn to maintain and ride bikes with fully qualified instructors.

They are also taught other skills such as cooking, budgeting and photography. Money raised will buy more cookers to enable more children to be able to cook at a given time.

How to support these charities

If you wish to support my charities, please contact my office on 020 8921 5023. You can also send a cheque - made payable to the 'Mayor's Charity Appeal' - to:

New Wine Church Receives Community Award from the Royal Borough of Greenwich

The Royal Borough of Greenwich recently presented New Wine Church with a Community Award.

The Borough recently held its 5 th annual Civic Awards Ceremony, to recognise the efforts of local heroes. Each year, the Civic Awards recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals, organisations and businesses to the social, economic and physical life of the Borough.

Residents nominated individuals and organisations for their inspirational contributions in eight categories. New Wine Church was nominated for the Community Award, and the Church was chosen as one of the winners in the category.

On Thursday 23 rd March 2017, Pastor Michael Olawore, the Senior Pastor of New Wine Church, attended the Civic Awards ceremony organised by the Royal Borough of Greenwich in the Woolwich Town Hall, where he was presented with the Community Award for Outstanding Leadership and Service to the Community .

There was a drinks reception afterwards, during which Pastor Michael and his team felicitated with the Mayor, Councillors of the Borough and with other recipients of the prestigious award.

Conveying the goodwill of the Borough to members of New Wine Church, Pastor Michael had this to say-

Very warm congratulations, Church!! Thank You for making an impact, touching lives, bringing hope to many thousands... God will not forget your labour of love. This is your year of Overflowing Abundance, In Jesus' Name !

New Wine Church runs several community projects in the Woolwich area, which include giving Christmas dinner hampers and turkeys to low income families, providing full English breakfast to the homeless on Saturday mornings through its Saturday Church initiative, and running the John Wilson pantry, providing dry goods to the needy. These initiatives have been in full swing for over a decade, and the Church is geared to continue sharing the love of Jesus in practical ways.

To contact New Wine Church, please use any of the following methods-
