December 2019 Thessaloniki - Greece ii Abstract This dissertation was written as part of the MSc in Sustainable Agriculture and Business at the International Hellenic University. This research is related to the application of precision agriculture methods in a sweet cherry orchard at the region of Pella, and more specific Achladochori village at the foothills of mount Paiko. The main purpose was to map the spatial variability of 2018 yield and correlate it with the cherry fruit quality parameters of weight, size and sugar content (BRIX). Soil texture and EC were mapped too. Data analysis brought out a significant spatial variability despite the small size of the orchard. First of all, I want to thank my supervisor As. Prof. Mr. Spyros Fountas for his confidence. In addition, Mrs Nicoleta Dara because without her important help and support this dissertation would be very difficult to complete and finally, my parents for their patience and assistance. Keywords: Precision Agriculture; cherry orchard; spatial variability; yield mapping Ilias Karampatzakis December 2019 iii Preface Cherry orchards occupy a small share of the cultivating area in Greece, approximately 14,000 out of almost 3 million cultivated hectares, but this area is enough to place Greece at the 10 biggest producers and exporters worldwide. Therefore, the adoption of PA practices in agricultural production is necessary in order to maintain the competitive advantages and reap more benefits, such as managerial improvements, higher yields, lower costs, minimization of environmental impacts and quality improvements. However, the implementation of these methods in Greek agricultural sector are still at the embryonic stage. Specifically, the application of Precision Agriculture methods in Greece has started in 2001 in cotton cultivation (Markinos et al., 2003) and during the last decades has expanded to other crops, such as apple orchards (Rappos et. al, 2005, Aggelopoulou et. al, 2007, Tanos et. al, 2007), olive orchards (Fountas et.al 2011, Chatzipapadopoulos and Protonarios, 2017) and pear orchards (Vatsanidou et.al, 2014). The main objective of this study is the investigation of the spatial variability of a cherry orchard, according to the principal methods of precision agriculture. The cherry orchard that was selected included three different planted varieties; ‘Early Bigi’ as the main variety and “Bigarreau Burlat’ and ‘Lapins’ as pollinators. Delineation of management zones, as well as yield and quality measurements were exploited, allowing the monitoring of significant parameters for the growth of the cultivation. Furthermore, Soil Electrical Conductivity (EC) measurements together with soil sampling were conducted, by using a GPS for the geo- reference of all the measurements. The analysis of the collected data for the map creation was applied to ArcGIS (ESRI) software and a statistical analysis was performed to determine data correlations using IBM SPSS® Statistics V25. 4 Lack of competent management and inappropriate use of land, concerning both current and future needs, will result in the continual degradation of these valuable resources. This paper examines the potential for three alternative land uses (agriculture, forestry and range management) and reforestations in the county of Pella. It was established that land usage cannot be changed from agriculture to forestry and/or range management; while on the contrary, the transition from range management to forestry can be successfully achieved.     Paeonia Municipality PAEONIA Gateway to Greece Identification – history – destinations Town Hall of Paeonia IDENTITY OF PAEONIA MUNICIPALITY Main characteristics and spatial integration Paeonia is a municipality of the Regional Entity of Kilkis, Central Macedonia Region, established by “Kallikratis”, New Architecture of Self-gov- erning Entities and Decentralised Administration. Paeonia resulted from the combina- tion of pre-existing municipalities of Axioupolis, Evropos, Goumenissa, Polykastro and the historical township of Livadia . The extent of Paeonia is 929.7 Klm² and its perma- nent population is 28.493 inhabitants, according to Census 2011. Administrative capital of the new municipality is Polykastro, whereas historic capital of Paeonia is Goumenissa and overall inhabited settlements exceed 52. Paeonia has a strategic geographical location as Axios River crosses its mainland and the New and Old National Evzoni - Athens route is the main roadway in the territory. Alongside, with two important border Stations of Evzoni and the Commercial Railway of Idomeni, Paeonia is the main entrance and exit Goumenissa Axioupoli Evropos of Greece to Balkans and Central Europe. It is worth noting that six million people pass every year through the Customs and Border Station of Evzoni, highlighting that it is the second largest Gateway in Greece following the airport «Eleftherios Venizelos» of Athens. Painia shares borders with the Municipalities of Pella and Almopia, Chalcedona From South, Kilkis from East and FYROM from its North National Borders. It is located 30 km. from Kilkis and 60 km. away from Thessaloniki. The total extent of the municipality represents 36,87% of Kilkis Prefecture. Thanks to Mount Paiko and the Axios River visitors can meet rich fauna, flora, fluvial fish and wildlife.

Intermediate species with morphological characters of H. olympicum, i.e., stem and leaves with rigid simple hairs up to 25 mm long, and thick campanulate flower heads with a bright or even white tomentose indument rich of stellate hairs, are categorized in a new section, sect. Olympica GOTTSCHL. & DUNKEL. Zusammenfassung: Als Ergebnis weiterer gezielter Feldstudien in Nordgriechenland im Jahr 2019 und früher können 9 neue Arten und 6 neue Unterarten aus der Gattung Hieracium sowie eine neue Art aus der Gattung Pilosella beschrieben werden: Hieracium abietopsis GOTTSCHL.

    LANDSCAPE CHANGE AND TRADE IN ANCIENT GREECE: ∗ EVIDENCE FROM POLLEN DATA y z ANTON BONNIER TYMON SŁOCZYNSKI´ GRZEGORZ KOLOCH§ { k KATERINA KOULI ADAM IZDEBSKI Abstract In this paper we use pollen data from a number of sites in southern Greece and Macedonia to study long-term vegetation change in these regions from 1000 BCE to 600 CE. Based on insights from environmental history, we in- terpret our estimated trends in the regional presence of cereal, olive, and vine pollen as proxies for structural changes in agricultural production. We present evidence that there was a market economy in ancient Greece and a major trade expansion several centuries before the Roman conquest. Our results are con- sistent with auxiliary data on settlement dynamics, shipwrecks, and ancient oil and wine presses.
